Friedenfels

The German Continental Deep Drilling Programme (German: Kontinentales Tiefbohrprogramm der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, lit. 'Continental deep-drilling program of the Federal Republic of Germany'), abbreviated as the KTB borehole, was a scientific drilling project carried out from 1987 to 1995 near Windischeschenbach, Bavaria. The main super-deep borehole reached a depth of 9,101 m (29,859 feet) in the Earth's continental crust. The Federal Ministry of Research funded the project with 528 million DM (270 million euros). The (Lower Saxony) LBEG mining office (State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology) took the project lead. After the drilling project ended, the German Research Centre for Geosciences used the borehole to install a seismic deep observatory (Tiefenobservatorium) which was active from 1996 to 2001. The derrick used at the site, one of the largest in the world, remains in place and has become a tourist attraction. The two boreholes were kept open for further scientific research and for in-situ testing of equipment and devices.

Erbendorf (German pronunciation: [ˈɛʁbm̩ˌdɔʁf] ) is a town in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz) region of Germany. As of December, 2006, the town has a population of 5,341. The following villages are incorporated into the town: Aschenhof, Birkenreuth, Boxdorf, Eppenhof, Frodersreuth, Glashütte, Gössenreuth, Gramlhof, Grötschenreuth, Hauxdorf, Inglashof, Napfberg, Neuenreuth, Pfaben, Plärn, Schadenreuth, Siegritz, Steinbach, Straßenschacht, Thann, Wäldern, Wetzldorf, and Wildenreuth.

At 946 metres (3,104 ft), the Platte is the highest mountain in the Steinwald, a forest in the Fichtel mountain range in central Germany. The Platte is a popular walking destination, not least because of the Upper Palatinate Tower, which is located on its summit. It is climbable and offers good views of the surrounding region.

The Upper Palatinate Tower (German: Oberpfalzturm) is an observation tower on the 946 metres (3,104 ft) high Platte mountain, the highest peak in the Steinwald and in Northern Upper Palatinate in southern Germany. The first solid observation tower was built in 1971–1972 by the Steinwald Nature Park Authority from Steinwald spruce trees. Due to dilapidation it had to be demolished on 1 April 1998. The engineer, Ferdinand Lehner, from Tirschenreuth was then given the contract to design and build a new tower. On 10 September 2000 the new observation tower was opened. It is 35 metres (115 ft) high and was made of larch plywood. The contract was let by the town of Erbendorf. The total cost of construction came to about DM 400,000 and was supported by grants from the European Union, the Free State of Bavaria, the district of Tirschenreuth and the surrounding towns and villages. From the observation platform there are views of the Fichtel Mountains, the Karlovy Vary Region, the Stiftland and over the Upper Palatine Forest.

The Steinwald is a mountain range up to 946 m above sea level (NN) in southern Germany and, at the same time, a nature park (Steinwald Nature Park) founded in 1970 with an area of 246 square kilometres (95 sq mi) in the province of Upper Palatinate, in North Bavaria.

Windischeschenbach is a town in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated 14 km (8.7 mi) north of Weiden in der Oberpfalz. The German Continental Deep Drilling Programme, which reached a super-deep maximum depth of 9,101 metres (29,859 ft), is located near Windischeschenbach. Windischeschenbach is generally considered the centre of Zoigl beer.
