Elgin Community College (ECC) is a public community college in Elgin, Illinois. It was founded in 1949 as part of Elgin Area School District U46. Community College District 509 was formed 17 years later in 1966, a year after Illinois legislators created the Illinois Community College System. Most of the District is in Kane County with portions in DeKalb, Cook, McHenry, and DuPage. The 360-square-mile (930 km2) District serves 300,000 people, 11,000 businesses, four public school districts, and 15 high schools. Classes were originally held in the Elgin High School (now the Gifford Street School) but later moved a 145-acre (58.7 ha) campus developed on what was previously the farm colony of Elgin State Hospital. On April 7, 2009, voters in District 509 approved a $178M bond referendum to finance the renovation and expansion of the campus.

Elgin Township is located in Kane County, Illinois. It is divided by the Fox River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 100,922 and it contained 35,690 housing units.

Larkin High School, also known as LHS, is a public four-year high school located in Elgin, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of Elgin Area School District U46, which also includes Elgin High School, Bartlett High School, South Elgin High School, and Streamwood High School.

Elgin ( EL-jin) is a city in Cook and Kane counties in the northern part of Illinois, United States. Elgin is located 35 mi (56 km) northwest of Chicago, along the Fox River. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 114,797, making it the 6th most populous city in Illinois.

The Larkin Home for Children is a former orphanage at 1212 Larkin Avenue in Elgin, Illinois. The Larkin Home originated from the Elgin Children's Home Society, which was founded in 1898; it operated from a donated building until 1912, when it built its own orphanage due to space concerns. The home was funded by private donors and sought to provide a stable domestic environment for the children it housed, making it a typical example of a Progressive Era orphanage and contrasting it with earlier government-run programs. Architect George Morris designed the 1912 building in the Georgian Revival style. A hospital was built on the home's property in 1926 to address the home's difficulties caring for ill children. The home continued to house children until 1966, when it was converted to an administrative building due to changes in the Larkin Home's mission; it closed entirely in 2013.The orphanage was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 31, 2018.

South Elgin is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 23,865. In 2007, Money magazine named South Elgin as 82nd of 100 entries in its "America's Best Places to Live" edition and again in 2011 as 98th of 100 entries.

Wing Park Golf Course in Elgin, Illinois is the "oldest and best preserved nine-hole municipal golf course in Illinois." The course was constructed during a golf course boom in the Chicago area during first few years of the 1900s. The course was named after William H. Wing, who donated the land for a park in 1902. When the Elgin and Belvidere Electric Company was built only a few blocks away, Elgin developed the southern portion of the property to a golf course. The course was developed by Tom Bendelow, a prolific designer who laid out over six hundred golf courses. Wing Park Golf Course opened on September 5, 1908 and has been in continuous operation since. The Wing Park Golf Club was organized in 1912 to help manage the property. The course was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

The Elgin Mental Health Center (formerly Elgin State Hospital & the Northern Illinois Hospital and Asylum for the Insane) is a mental health facility operated by the State of Illinois in Elgin, Illinois. Throughout its history, Elgin's mission has changed. At times, it treated mental illness, tuberculosis, and provided federally funded care for veterans. The hospital's site, which included a patient-staffed farm reached a maximum of 1,139 acres (461 ha) after World War II. Its maximum population was reached in the mid 1950s with 7,700 patients. Between 1993 and 2008, most of the older buildings in the complex were demolished due to being in poor condition as the result of being abandoned for decades. The site is/was popular among teens and in the paranormal world due to its claims of hauntings in the older buildings and the hospital's cemetery.

St. Edward Central Catholic High School is a private, Roman Catholic high school in Elgin, Illinois. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockford and competes athletically in the Chicagoland Christian Conference. St. Edward Central Catholic was established in 1941 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. It was named after St. Edward the Confessor and in honor of Bishop Edward Francis Hoban, 2nd Bishop of the Rockford diocese.

Big Timber Road is a commuter railroad station in the Kane County portion of Elgin, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. The station is the western terminus of Metra's Milwaukee District West Line. It is 39.8 miles (64.1 km) away from Chicago Union Station, the eastern terminus of the line. In Metra’s zone-based fare system, Big Timber Road is in zone H. As of 2018, Big Timber Road is the 75th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 699 weekday boardings. When it opened in 1986 (the same year the Milwaukee Road ceased operations), the surrounding area mostly consisted of farmland. Since then, numerous residential subdivisions have been built. Big Timber Road presently does not have service on weekends or holidays. As of December 12, 2022, there are a total of 41 trains serving the station, with 19 inbound trains originating from here and 22 outbound trains terminating here on weekdays. Travel time to Union Station ranges from 1 hour and 7 minutes to 1 hour and 28 minutes, depending on the train.

The Fox River Trolley Museum is a railroad museum in South Elgin, Illinois. Incorporated in 1961 as R.E.L.I.C. (Railway Equipment Leasing and Investment Co.), it opened in 1966 and became the Fox River Trolley Museum in 1984.

Elgin is one of three stations on Metra's Milwaukee District West Line in Elgin, Illinois. The station is 36.6 miles (58.9 km) away from Chicago Union Station, the eastern terminus of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Elgin is in zone H. As of 2018, Elgin is the 116th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 411 weekday boardings.As of December 12, 2022, Elgin is served by 44 trains (22 in each direction) on weekdays, by all 24 trains (12 in each direction) on Saturdays, and by all 18 trains (nine in each direction) on Sundays and holidays. All weekend trains originate and terminate here, in addition to three inbound trains originating from here on weekdays. The station was built by The Milwaukee Road and was a stop on numerous intercity trains, such as the Midwest Hiawatha, Arrow, and Southwest Limited. It was also the terminus station for by more frequent commuter trains to Chicago Union Station, until Metra took over service.The Elgin Metra station is also proposed as a stop on the Black Hawk, a proposed revival of a former Amtrak train of the same name. However, service to Rockford, Illinois is planned to begin operations in late 2027 with Metra instead of Amtrak.
