Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England, is one of the courses in the Open Championship rotation. The Women's British Open has also been played on the course five times: once prior to being designated a major championship by the LPGA Tour, and four times since.

The 2019 Senior Open Championship was a senior major golf championship and the 33rd Senior Open Championship, held on 25–28 July at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham, England. It was the 5th Senior Open Championship played at the course and the 17th Senior Open Championship played as a senior major championship. World Golf Hall of Fame member Bernhard Langer won by two strokes over Paul Broadhurst. The 2019 event was Langer's fourth Senior Open Championship title and his 11th senior major championship victory.

The 2018 Ricoh Women's British Open was played from 2–5 August in England at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club Golf Links in Lancashire. It was the 43rd Women's British Open, the 18th as a major championship on the LPGA Tour, and the fifth at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. Georgia Hall of England shot a final round 67 (−5) to win by two strokes over runner-up Pornanong Phatlum, the 54-hole leader. It was her first major title and she was the first British winner since Catriona Matthew in 2009. It was also the first win on tour (LPGA Tour or Ladies European Tour) for the 22-year-old Hall, the first English winner of the championship in 14 years. The event was televised by Golf Channel and NBC Sports in the United States and Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.

The 1974 Open Championship was the 103rd Open Championship, held from 10 to 13 July at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England. Gary Player won his third Open Championship, four strokes ahead of runner-up Peter Oosterhuis. It was the eighth of his nine major titles and second of the year; he won the Masters in April. In the other two majors in 1974, the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship, Player had top ten finishes. The use of the larger "American ball" (diameter 1.68 in, 42.67 mm) was made compulsory. In previous Opens, players could use the smaller "British ball" (1.62 in, 41.15 mm).

The 1979 Open Championship was the 108th Open Championship, held 18–21 July at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England. Seve Ballesteros, 22, won the first of his five major titles, three strokes ahead of runners-up Jack Nicklaus and Ben Crenshaw. It was the first of his three Open Championship victories; he raised the Claret Jug again in 1984 and 1988.This was the last Open scheduled to end on Saturday; in 1980 it moved to a Sunday final round, similar to the other three majors.

The 1996 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 125th Open Championship, held from 18–21 July at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, England. Tom Lehman won his only major championship by two strokes over runners-up Mark McCumber and Ernie Els. Lehman built a six-stroke lead after 54 holes and became the first American to win at Lytham since Bobby Jones seventy years earlier.Tiger Woods, age 20, was the only amateur to make the cut and finished tied for 22nd; he turned professional six weeks later. Jack Nicklaus, 56, was one stroke out of the lead after 36 holes, but fell back on the weekend and tied for 45th.

The 45th Walker Cup Match was played on 12 and 13 September 2015 at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. Great Britain and Ireland won 16½ to 9½.

The 2009 Women's British Open was held 30 July – 2 August at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England. It was the 33rd Women's British Open and the ninth as a major championship on the LPGA Tour. Catriona Matthew won her only major, three strokes ahead of runner-up Karrie Webb.It was the fourth Women's British Open at Royal Lytham and the third as an LPGA major, most recently in 2006. The course had also hosted ten Open Championships, most recently in 2001. The par-72 course was set by the Ladies Golf Union at 6,492 yards (5,936 m), 413 yards (378 m) shorter than the par-71 set-up for The Open Championship in 2001. Matthew became the first Scot to win the title, just eleven weeks after giving birth to her second child in mid-May.

The 2003 Women's British Open was held 31 July to 3 August at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, England. It was the 27th edition of the Women's British Open, and the third as a major championship on the LPGA Tour. TNT Sports and ABC Sports televised the event in the United States and BBC Sport in the United Kingdom. Annika Sörenstam won the sixth of her ten major titles, one stroke ahead of runner-up Se-Ri Pak, the 2001 champion. The victory completed the career grand slam for Sörenstam.

The 1969 Open Championship was the 98th Open Championship, held from 9–12 July at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, England. Tony Jacklin won the first of his two major championships, two strokes ahead of Bob Charles.Jacklin was the first Briton to win The Open since 1951, and it was another sixteen years until the next, Sandy Lyle in 1985. It was the fifth Open Championship at Lytham & St Annes, which has hosted eleven times, most recently in 2012.

The 14th Ryder Cup Matches were held 13–14 October 1961 at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, England. The United States team won the competition by a score of 141⁄2 to 91⁄2 points.At the 1959 Ryder Cup there had been informal discussions between the US and British PGAs about changing the format of the contest. In April 1960 the British PGA made a formal proposal. The suggestion was that, for 1961, matches would be reduced to 18 holes and that there would be two sets of matches each day; two sets of foursomes on the first day and two sets of singles on the second. The pairings for the foursomes and the order of play in the foursomes and singles could be changed for the second set of matches. They also proposed that, for 1963, the match should be extended to three days with two set of four-ball matches on the extra day. By August 1960 the US PGA had agreed to the proposal as it related to the 1961 event, the change being formalised later that year.

The 1988 Open Championship was a men's major golf championship and the 117th Open Championship, held from 14 to 18 July at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, England. In a first-ever Monday finish, Seve Ballesteros shot a final round 65 to capture his third Open Championship and fifth major title, two strokes ahead of runner-up Nick Price, the 54-hole leader.Scheduled to finish on Sunday, heavy rain on Saturday caused flooding of several greens and the third round was scratched after play was started. Under European Tour rules, if less than half of the players had finished their rounds, the scores for that day were discarded. Since no player had finished, all the scores from Saturday were scrapped. Sunday was briefly scheduled for 36 holes, but due to the flooding, it was decided the course could not be readied in time for the early morning tee times. The third round was played on Sunday and the fourth on Monday, the first time in history the Open's final round finished on a Monday.
