Mattoon station

The Railway Express Agency Building was a historic building located at 1804 Western Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois. The building was constructed in 1918 to serve as the Mattoon office of the Railway Express Agency. The Railway Express Agency provided rail express shipping services to Mattoon's citizens, allowing them to ship money and packages along Mattoon's two major railways, the Illinois Central Railroad and Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis (Big Four). The agency formed in 1917, when the federal government ordered that all existing express services consolidate into a single service; this measure ensured consistent shipping of goods during World War I. The agency shipped goods to and from Mattoon until 1964, when the Big Four went bankrupt; the building served as a freight depot until 1971.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 16, 1994. It fell into disrepair due to disuse, however, and was demolished in July 2013. It was delisted in 2020.

The United States Post Office, located at 1701 Charleston Ave., is the former main post office of Mattoon, Illinois. The post office was constructed in 1913 by Mangnus Yeager & Son, a building company from Danville, Illinois. The building was designed in the Classical Revival style and features Renaissance Revival influences; James K. Taylor was the Supervising Architect for the building. The front of the building features seven arches in front of a portico containing the entrance, which is located at the top of a marble staircase. The three central arches are topped by a carved frieze, and marble cartouches separate each pair of arches. The building served as Mattoon's post office from its construction until 1980, when a new post office opened.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Burgess-Osborne Memorial Auditorium is a public auditorium at 1701 Wabash Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois. The building was constructed in 1952-53 using funds from the estate of Mattoon resident Emily Burgess-Osborne. Architect Oliver W. Stiegemeyer of St. Louis designed the auditorium in the mid-century modern style. His design includes a pylon above the entrance with the building's name, an asymmetrical shape, and brick and stone exterior sections, all characteristic elements of the style. The auditorium has hosted concerts, dances, political speeches, and public meetings; it was also the headquarters of the Mattoon Association of Commerce for several decades.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 5, 2018.

The Starr Hotel is a historic hotel building located at 1913-1923 Western Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois. Businessman George M. Custer built the hotel in 1888. The hotel primarily housed workers on Mattoon's three railroads: the Illinois Central, the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis (Big Four), and the Peoria, Decatur and Evansville. Mattoon's economy was primarily based on railroad traffic; the city expanded greatly after the Illinois Central and Big Four opened in the 1850s, its railroad yards employed hundreds of workers, and multiple industries grew in Mattoon due to its railroad access. While the hotel mainly housed railroad workers, it also catered to other working-class groups, such as seasonal broom corn workers and hobos. The hotel became a boarding house in the 1920s, and its upper floors closed entirely in the 1960s; its first floor is still a commercial property. The building is one of two surviving working-class hotels in Mattoon.The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 16, 1994.

Burger King is a restaurant founded by the Hoots family and operated by Burger King LLC of Illinois in Mattoon, Illinois, United States; it is not related to the fast food chain Burger King. The restaurant's founders claim that it is the "original" Burger King and predates the fast food chain. A 1968 court case between this restaurant and the larger Burger King chain is a notable case in United States trademark law regarding the Lanham Act.

The Mattoon Jewish Community Center is a Reform Jewish congregation and synagogue, located in Mattoon, Illinois, in the United States. It was notable as North America's smallest Reform congregation, when it had four households. In 2022, the congregation expanded to seven households. The congregation's services are held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston.

Unity Church, now known as Trinity Episcopal Church, is a historic church located at 2200 Western Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois. Mattoon's Unitarian congregation built the church in 1872. The church was built with red brick with stone decorations and a wooden cornice. A rectangular bell tower stands at the church's southeast corner; the tower is louvered and contains two bells. The church's main entrance is located at the bottom of the tower. The church's nave is on the south side of the church; the nave features a wheel window and a large stained glass window with a wheel and two arches. The top of the nave and bell tower is decorated with corbelled brickwork. Mattoon's Unitarian congregation disbanded in the 1900s, and the church is now occupied by an Episcopal congregationThe church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 19, 1982.

The Fifteenth Street and Oklahoma Avenue Brick Street is a 4.3-mile (6.9 km) section of brick pavement on Fifteenth Street and Oklahoma Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois. The section of pavement covers eight blocks of Fifteenth Street and one block of Oklahoma Avenue at the south end of the Fifteenth Street section. The H. W. Clark Company paved the streets in 1924. The company first laid a concrete substructure and concrete curbs. An intermediate layer of sand and tar was laid on top of the concrete, and the bricks were placed on top of this layer. The segment of brick street accounts for nearly all of Mattoon's remaining brick streets, as less than 20% of its original 22.1-mile (35.6 km) brick street system has not been paved over with asphalt.The street was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 22, 1999.

Mattoon ( MAT-toon) is a city in Coles County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,870 as of the 2020 census. The city is home to Lake Land College and has close ties with its neighbor, Charleston. Both are principal cities of the Charleston–Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The Lumpkin Heights and Elm Ridge Subdivision Historic District is a residential historic district in Mattoon, Illinois. The district encompasses the Lumpkin Heights and Elm Ridge Subdivision neighborhoods in eastern Mattoon. Lumpkin Heights was originally developed as Lafayette Heights in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and it only became known by its current name after further development in the mid-twentieth century. The Elm Ridge Subdivision was developed entirely within the mid-twentieth century. The original Lafayette Heights section of the district includes examples of many popular architectural styles from the time of its development, with several examples of Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and American Craftsman designs. The remainder of the district exhibits trends common in post-World War II residential development, including several Modernist designs, Ranch-style houses, and prefabricated homes.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 26, 2017.

The Richard Roytek House is a historic house located at 3420 Richmond Avenue in Mattoon, Illinois. Local businessman Richard Roytek built the house for his family in 1949–50. The house has a ranch style design with Prairie School details; Roytek chose this design after visiting Harlingen, Texas in 1948. The single-story house has the characteristic low profile and gently sloping roof of the ranch style. In addition, the house has large picture windows on its front facade and an attached garage, both common features of ranch-style houses. The house's Prairie School features include its use of wood and stone, its horizontal limestone exterior, its overhanging eaves, and its wide chimney. The house is one of roughly twelve ranch-style houses in Mattoon which predate the city's ranch-style subdivisions developed in the mid-1950s.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 22, 2011.
