Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

First Peninsula is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Lunenburg Municipal District in Lunenburg County.

The Hillcrest Cemetery is the oldest protestant cemetery in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and one of the oldest in Canada. The cemetery is adjacent to the Lunenburg Academy. The oldest marker is dated 1761, eight years after Lunenburg was established. Hillcrest Cemetery contains 5 Commonwealth war graves from World War I and one from World War II (along with 4 Norwegian war graves from Camp Norway).

The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is a church in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The church is the home of the oldest active Lutheran congregation in Canada. German Lutheran settlers arrived in 1753 and held services in the open air and later at St. John's Anglican Church (Lunenburg). The first church on this site was built in 1772 in preparation for the arrival of its first pastor, the Rev. Mr. Friederich Schultz at Lunenburg. He stayed for 8 years.After the position was vacant for two years, Johann Gottlob Schmeisser arrived in Lunenburg on 1 May 1782. Within a month of arriving in the community, the Lutheran minister was involved in defending the town from American invaders in the Raid on Lunenburg (1782). He is buried at the Hillcrest cemetery. In 1814, Dettlieb Christopher Jessen donated to the church a silver paten and two chalices.Third minister was Ferdinand Conrad Temme (1808-1832). He was forced to leave Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (part of present-day Germany) in 1806 when Duke Charles William Ferdinand was defeated by Napoleon's troops in the Battle of Auerstedt. Temme described his initial response to being posted to Lunenburg: "I reluctantly accepted this call ... and on 5th of February, 1708, commenced the voyage to the Siberia of North America." He stayed at Lunenburg for 24 years. Almost 50 years after he died, the congregation built a monument to him in the Hillcrest cemetery. The position of pastor was vacant for three years until the arrival of Rev. Charles Ernst Cossman (1835-1876). He was a pupil of Wilhelm Gesenius at the University of Hale. Cossman described how clergy thought about leaving Germany to come to Lunenburg: "not one would go because Nova Scotia was so far, such a dreary land and only a salary of $400 was offered; less than a common school-master in Germany." He stayed in Lunenburg 46 years. He is buried at the Hillcrest Cemetery (Lunenburg, Nova Scotia).The church was replaced in 1841. The present building dates from 1890 and was designed in the High Victorian Gothic style.The only remains of the first Lutheran church are the key to the building and the Saint Antoine-Marie bell that had formerly hung in the Fortress of Louisbourg (St. Joseph is engraved on the bell, created 1723, Brittany, France) and had been purchased by the congregation in 1776.

The Raid on Lunenburg occurred during the French and Indian War when Indigenous forces attacked a British settlement at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on May 8, 1756. The indigenous forces raided two islands on the northern outskirts of the fortified Township of Lunenburg, Rous Island and Payzant Island (present-day Covey Island). The raiding party killed five settlers and took five prisoners. This raid was the first of nine that the Indigenous and Acadian forces conducted against the Lunenburg peninsula over the next three-years of the war. The Indigenous forces took John Payzant and Lewis Payzant prisoner, both of whom left captivity narratives of their experiences.

St. John's Anglican Church was the first church established in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada (1753). It is the second Church of England built in Nova Scotia, and is the second oldest continuous Protestant church in present-day Canada. Early on 1 November 2001, St. John's church suffered significant damage by fire. It was restored and re-dedicated June 12, 2005. The early congregation was mainly Foreign Protestants, including Lutheran Germans. The first missionary was sent by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel was the Rev. Jean-Baptiste Moreau (clergyman) (who is buried in the crypt below the church). Dettlieb Christopher Jessen donated a church bell that is displayed on the church grounds. (Jessen had the bell made by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, the same company that made Big Ben and the Liberty Bell.) Jessen also donated a silver Paten and Chalice to the church (1814). Bells in the tower were given by Lt. Col. Charles Edwin Kaulbach (1902). Rev. Roger Aitken completed the rectory for the church on Townsend Street (c.1816). The stone monument to John Creighton Sr. in the church was created by John Bacon (1777–1859), a nineteenth century sculptor. He created six monuments in St. Paul's Cathedral and many in Westminster Abbey. The church remains a vibrant spiritual centre within the community and beyond. It is part of the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in the Anglican Church of Canada. The parish welcomed their first female rector, the Rev. Dr. Laura Marie Piotrowicz, in January 2019.

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church is a church in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The congregation is the longest history of any Presbyterian congregation in Canada. After meeting at a private house, the congregation worshipped in St. John's Anglican Church (Lunenburg) (1759–1770). The first church was built in 1770 and the first minister was Reverend Bruin Romkes Comingo, who served the community for 50 years until he died at age 95 (1820). The current church was built in the neo-gothic style and dates from 1828.

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is a museum in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, operating seasonally from mid-May through mid-October. The museum commemorates the fishing heritage of the Atlantic coast of Canada. Housed in brightly painted red buildings, with floating vessels at wharfside, the Museum offers a host of attractions, a maritime gift shop and restaurant. Retired fishermen and experienced "Heritage Interpreters" accentuate the experience of visiting the museum. Entertaining activities and demonstrations take place daily from mid-May to mid-October. The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is operated by the volunteer Board of Directors of the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society, for the Nova Scotia Museum.

The Raid on Lunenburg (also known as the Sack of Lunenburg) occurred during the American Revolution when the US privateer, Captain Noah Stoddard of Fairhaven, Massachusetts on the 'Scammell' with four other privateer vessels attacked the British settlement at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on July 1, 1782. The raid was the last major privateer attack on a Nova Scotia community during the war. Lunenburg was defended by militia leaders Colonel John Creighton and Major Dettlieb Christopher Jessen. In Nova Scotia, the assault on Lunenburg was the most spectacular raid of the war. On the morning of July 1, Stoddard led approximately 170 US privateers in five heavily armed vessels and overpowered Lunenburg’s defence, capturing the blockhouses, burning Creighton's home, and filling Jessen's house with bullet holes. The privateers then looted the settlement and kept the militia at bay with the threat of destroying the entire town. The American privateers plundered the town and took three prisoners, including Creighton, who were later released from Boston without a ransom having been paid.

Second Peninsula is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Lunenburg Municipal District in Lunenburg County. Ranger Joseph Gorham owned 300 acres of land at Lunenburg: land still named Gorham Point at the end of present-day Second Peninsula, two islands nearby,a peninsula leading from the community of Mahone Bay as well as the Seven Islands, near Sacrifice Island in Mahone Bay. After participating in the Siege of Louisbourg (1758), Gorham was in the area fighting against the Mi'kmaq militia's Lunenburg Campaign (1758).
