RRH Staxton Wold

Sherburn was a rural district in the East Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1935. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 from that part of the Scarborough rural sanitary district which was in the East Riding (the rest forming Scarborough Rural District in the North Riding). It was abolished in 1935 by a County Review Order made under the Local Government Act 1929 and transferred to Norton Rural District, Bridlington Rural District and a small part to Filey Urban District.

Staxton is a village in North Yorkshire, England, part of the civil parish of Willerby, and situated approximately 8.2 miles from Scarborough town centre. Until 1974 the village lay in the historic county boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire and from 1974 to 2023 was a part of the Ryedale district.

Willerby is a small village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is contiguous with neighbouring Staxton. The villages of Staxton, Willerby and Binnington make up the civil parish of Willerby.Until 1974 the village lay in the historic county boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Between 1974 and 2023 the parish was part of the district of Ryedale. It is now administered by North Yorkshire Council. According to the 2001 UK census, Willerby parish had a population of 708, increasing to 737 at the 2011 census.

The Binnington Carr Hoard is a Roman coin hoard dating from the late 1st century AD. It contains 12 silver denarii within a copper alloy bell. It is in the collection of the Yorkshire Museum.

Star Carr is a Mesolithic archaeological site in North Yorkshire, England. It is around five miles (8 km) south of Scarborough. It is generally regarded as the most important and informative Mesolithic site in Great Britain. It is as important to the Mesolithic period as Stonehenge is to the Neolithic period or Scandinavian York is to understanding Viking Age Britain. The site was occupied during the early Mesolithic archaeological period, which coincided with the preboreal and boreal climatic periods. Though the ice age had ended and temperatures were close to modern averages, sea levels had not yet risen sufficiently to separate Britain from continental Europe. Highlights among the finds include Britain's oldest structure, 21 red deer stag skull-caps that may have been headdresses and nearly 200 projectile, or harpoon, points made of red deer antler. These organic materials were preserved due to having been buried in waterlogged peat. Normally all that remains on Mesolithic sites are stone tools. Excavation of the site began in 1948, a year after artefacts were first noticed by John Moore, an amateur archaeologist. The site is most famous for some of the extremely rare artefacts discovered during the original excavations but its importance has been reinforced by new understandings of the nature and extent of the Mesolithic archaeology in the area and reinterpretations of the original material.

The Star Carr Pendant is a unique engraved shale pendant from the Mesolithic site of Star Carr in North Yorkshire. It has been described as the oldest Mesolithic art in Britain.

Flixton is a village in North Yorkshire, England. Until 1974 the village lay in the historic county boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire and from 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Scarborough. There is a public house, the Foxhound Inn.

Fordon is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Wold Newton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, near the border with North Yorkshire. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) south of Scarborough and 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Bridlington. In 1931 the parish had a population of 29.There is a small church dedicated to St James that is now a Grade II* listed building. The name Fordon, first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Fordun, Fordune, and Forduna, is thought to come from the Old English words fore ('in front of') and dūn ('hill'). Thus it once meant 'In front of the hill'.In 1823 Fordon was in the parish of Hunmanby and the Wapentake of Dickering. Occupations at the time included three farmers.Fordon was formerly a township in the parish of Hunmanby, from 1866 Fordon was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Wold Newton.

Folkton is a small village and civil parish at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds and on the edge of the Vale of Pickering on an area known as Folkton Carr (carr meaning low lands) in North Yorkshire, England. Until 1974 the village lay in the historic county boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire and from 1974 until 2023 was part of the Borough of Scarborough. There is a church dedicated to St John the Evangelist. Folkton House, the former rectory is located on Filey Road. Towards Flixton is the former village school which is now closed, built in 1832. According to the 2011 UK Census, Folkton parish had a population of 535, an increase on the 2001 UK Census figure of 461.

Foxholes is a village in North Yorkshire, England, part of the civil parish of Foxholes with Butterwick. It lies where the B1249 road crosses the Great Wold Valley, 9 miles (14.5 km) south from Scarborough, 11 miles (17.7 km) north-west from Bridlington, and 7 miles (11.3 km) north-east from Sledmere. The course of the winterbourne stream the Gypsey Race passes to the south of the village. Until 1974, the village lay in the historic county boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Ryedale district. Foxholes Grade II listed Anglican church is dedicated to St Mary, and is an 1866 limestone and sandstone construction by George Fowler Jones Pevsner describes this neo-Norman church as: "one of the ugliest in the Riding... The north pier's are grotesque, with their undersized shafts on their over-high bases and their big square foliage capitals... Font: obstrusively Norman". He also notes several windows by Capronnier, and a 1720 cup by William Gamble.

Wold Newton is a small Yorkshire Wolds village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 9 miles (14 km) south of Scarborough and 9 miles (14 km) north-west of Bridlington. Wold Newton is located within the Great Wold Valley and the course of the Gypsey Race, a winterbourne chalk stream, passes through the south of the village. The village of Fordon is also part of the civil parish of Wold Newton. According to the 2011 UK census, Wold Newton parish had a population of 337, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 291. The parish church of All Saints is a Grade II* listed building. There are a further eight Grade II listed buildings including Wold Newton Hall, the former Wesleyan Chapel (now Wold Newton Community Centre), The Old Vicarage, the Anvil Arms Public House and the Red telephone box on Wold Newton Green. Approximately two thirds of the village falls within the Wold Newton Conservation area.Wold Newton has a small, fully automated telephone exchange. Rather confusingly, this is referred to as the "Thwing Exchange". (Thwing is a neighbouring village). Wold Newton Cricket Club have a ground off Laking Lane and field a first and second team. The children's author Christina Butler lived for many years in the western section of Wold Newton Hall. Between 1988 and 2005 she wrote thirteen books including Stanley in the Dark and Archie the Ugly Dinosaur.
