Garrett College is a public community college in McHenry, Maryland. The college has three outreach centers: Accident, Grantsville, and Oakland.

Located on the outskirts of McHenry is the Garrett County Airport, Wisp Ski Resort, and Golf Club at Wisp. McHenry is part of the media market of Pittsburgh. McHenry's population as of 2012 was 1,328.

Adventure Sports Center International is an Olympic standard white water rafting and canoe/kayak slalom center located on the mountaintop above the Wisp Ski Resort at Deep Creek Lake, McHenry, Maryland, United States. In addition to serving as a venue for slalom races and training, the center offers a range of services to the general public including guided raft trips, inflatable kayak rentals, and riverboard rentals.The center opened in May 2007, constructed at a cost of $24 million, and is the third pump-powered artificial whitewater facility built in North America. Its educational partner in water sports instruction is the Adventuresports Institute of nearby Garrett College, which offers degrees in outdoor adventure sports.

The Deep Creek Dam located about 8 miles north of Oakland, Maryland, consists of an earth and rockwall dam across a tributary of the Youghiogheny River that was completed in 1925 by the Pennsylvania Electric Company. Construction of the dam created the Deep Creek Lake. The twin water turbine 20 MW hydroelectric plant, acquired by Brookfield Renewable Power, Inc., in 2005, became operational in 1928. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission licensed the dam and hydroelectric plant in 1968, but released the licensing to Maryland effective 1994. Under a 1994 agreement with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the dam is operated to control waterflows to maintain the river temperature and dissolved oxygen levels to assist downstream fisheries with the intent of increasing the number of trout as well as to enable recreational whitewater activities (kayaking, canoeing, and commercial rafting) on the Upper Youghiogheny River into which the dam releases. The Maryland Department of the Environment water appropriations permit under which the dam operates was last renewed on September 2, 2020.

Deep Creek Lake is a man-made reservoir in the U.S. state of Maryland. It covers about 3,900 acres (16 km2) and has 69 miles (111 km) of shoreline. The lake is home to a wide variety of aquatic life, such as freshwater fish and aquatic birds. The Wisp Ski Resort is located nearby.

Glamorgan, also known as Kittery Hill, is a large Queen Anne style house in Deer Park, Garrett County, Maryland. It is a large 2+1⁄2-story frame building built in 1888, as a summer house.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Anderson Chapel, also known as St. Paul's Episcopal Chapel, is a historic Episcopal church located at Swanton, Garrett County, Maryland. It is a late-19th century frame, one-story, gable-roofed church built in the Carpenter Gothic board-and-batten style. This style was popularized by the architect Richard Upjohn during the 19th century.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Wilson is an unincorporated community in Garrett County, Maryland, United States. Wilson is located on a CSX Transportation line 7.5 miles (12.1 km) east-northeast of Oakland.

Swanton is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Garrett County, Maryland, United States. Swanton is home to Deep Creek Lake State Park and many private homes on or near Deep Creek Lake. Additionally, Swanton is local to Wisp Ski Resort and close to several other recreation areas, such as Jennings Randolph Lake and Ohiopyle State Park. A church and a post office are located in the downtown area. Altamont is an unincorporated community in Garrett County, Maryland, United States. Altamont sits on the Eastern Continental Divide between the watershed of Crabtree Creek, which flows into the Savage River and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean, and the watershed of the Little Youghiogheny River, which flows into the Youghiogheny River and eventually into the Gulf of Mexico. Altamont is notable as the spot at which the B&O Railroad crossed the divide. Today, that same spot is crossed by CSX's Mountain Subdivision. Altamont also features the intersection of Maryland Route 135 (MD 135) and MD 495.
