Cyrildene

Bruma is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. In the 1990s Bruma was well known for South Africa's first manmade lake-side shopping centre, and for its popular African curios and crafts market which attracted tourists and day visitors from around the country. As a popular entertainment destination Bruma boasted many activities and a plethora of restaurants and retail stores. Many of South Africa's large restaurant chain stores can find their routes at the then called Fishermans Village. Well remembered restaurants and entertainment venues included Late Night Al's, Norma Jeans Diner, The Grillhouse, Maresol, Helen of Troy, Johnny Rockets, Cocktails and The Magic Company. Other well-known stores were The Spy Shop, Sweets from Heaven, Woolworths Foods, The Swatch Shop, the current Caltex Fuel station and many more. In 2015, the City of Johannesburg spearheaded the rehabilitation of the Bruma Lake precinct and created a platform for businesses and properties to once again flourish in the Bruma CBD. The new Bruma Lake Park was created and the Bruma bridge refurbished at a cost of R80 million. Currently Bruma Lifestyle Centre is situated adjacent to the new Bruma Lake Park. Originally a buzzing cosmopolitan retail centre with restaurants, entertainment and shopping the centre deteriorated due to several contributing factors. Currently plans are underway to develop the existing Bruma Lifestyle Centre. The NEW Bruma centre will be known as CHROMA – meaning colour in Greek. It will depict the beauty of life in South Africa as well as the diversity of cultures in our beautiful country. In addition, the development will boast a new landmark known as the CHROMA TOWER – an African tower of light and colour that will intensify the skyline of Johannesburg. This new and exciting development was announced in conjunction with the launch of the New Bruma Lake Park by COJ in 2016. It was greatly received with overwhelming support.

Linksfield is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is a suburb lying north-east of the Johannesburg CBD and is surrounded southerly by Linksfield Ridge, easterly by Linksfield North and Bedford, St Andrews and Senderwood. Linksfield itself is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. On the southerly side and over the ridge are the areas of Cyrildene, Observatory and Morninghill, but these suburbs are not visible to Linksfield as they are hidden behind the Linksfield Ridge.

Eastgate Shopping Centre is a super-regional shopping centre in Bedfordview, near Bedford Gardens and the Johannesburg city centre in Gauteng. It remains one of the largest centres in the country and is the fourth largest shopping centre in Gauteng, after Mall of Africa, Sandton City and Menlyn Park. The centre lies next to the R24 airport freeway, between the Johannesburg CBD to the west and O. R. Tambo International Airport to the east.

Fairwood is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is a small elevated suburb on the edge of Linksfield Ridge tucked between the suburbs of Orange Grove, Linksfield and Mountain View. Sylvia Pass winds down through the suburb. It is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

Observatory is a Suburb in Johannesburg's east and is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality; it borders the suburbs of Houghton Estate, Cyrildene, Linksfield, Bellevue, Bellevue East and Dewetshof.

Kensington is a hilly suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It was established in 1897 by Max Langermann (after whom the thoroughfare Langermann Drive is named). It is located in Region F of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and is bounded to the west by the suburb of Troyeville, to the east by Bedfordview and the north by Bruma and Cyrildene.

Sydenham is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located in Region E of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The suburb is surrounded by the area of Orchards, Orange Grove and other smaller suburbs.

Athlone Boys' High School is a boys-only high school located in, Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Chassidim Shul also known as the Chabad House is a synagogue in Yeoville, Johannesburg, South Africa built in 1963 and designed by the firm of Morgensten & Morgensten, the husband and wife team of Jacques Morgenstern and Riva Morgenstern. They met at the University of the Witwatersrand in the Department of Architecture in the 1940s and ran a successful and award-winning architectural practice in Johannesburg.The cornerstone was laid in 1963 by Mr Henry Jacobson, in memory of his parents, long-standing members of the Chassidic community. The building committee included Rabbi Aloy, obm, Mr Shaul Bacher, obm, Mr Mitzie Yachad and others. The Shul was finished about a year later.The Chassidim Shul served as a place of worship and study and other activities of Chabad-Lubavitch. It was famous for its Shabbat farbrengens and extraordinary Chassidic joy and dancing on Simchat Torah.Almost every Rabbi who is today a congregational leader was once a young man or a bochur at the Chassidim Shul. In retrospect “that little shul in Yeoville” has proven to be a powerful engine that changed the face of Jewish South Africa. It brought Yiddishkeit, Lubavitch and the Rebbe into the hearts of literally thousands of Jews through the establishment of more than a dozen Chabad shuls in Johannesburg, Natal and the Cape.Sadly, with the change in demographics in Yeoville it is no longer in use as a Synagogue.
