Evanston ( EV-ən-stən) is a college town suburb of Chicago. Located in Cook County, Illinois, United States, it is situated on the North Shore along Lake Michigan. Evanston is 12 miles (19 km) north of Downtown Chicago, bordered by Chicago to the south, Skokie to the west, Wilmette to the north, and Lake Michigan to the east. Evanston had a population of 78,110 as of 2020. Founded by Methodist business leaders in 1857, the city was incorporated in 1863. Evanston is home to Northwestern University, founded in 1851 before the city's incorporation, one of the world's leading research universities. Today known for its socially liberal politics and ethnically diverse population, Evanston was historically a dry city, until 1972. The city uses a council-manager system of government and is a Democratic stronghold. The city is heavily shaped by the influence of Chicago, externally, and Northwestern, internally. The city and the university share a historically complex long-standing relationship.

Roycemore School is an independent, nonsectarian, co-educational college preparatory school located in Evanston, Illinois serving students in pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. The school's current enrollment is approximately 240 students as of 2021. The school's old building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.In 2022, for the state of Illinois, Niche ranked Roycemore School as the #1 most diverse private high school, the sixth-best private high school, and the fifth-best private K–12 school. The school currently has a six-to-one student-to-teacher ratio.

Ridge Manor is a historic apartment building at the northeast corner of Ridge Avenue and Davis Street in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story brick building was built in 1916. The building consists of two sections; the section facing Ridge Avenue contains the building's larger apartments, while the U-shaped section facing Davis Street contains smaller apartments and includes an open courtyard. Architect William H. Pruyn, Jr., designed the building. The building's design features limestone detailing, protruding bays, and a cornice and parapet at the roof line.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.

Oak Ridge Apartments is a historic apartment building at 1615-1625 Ridge Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story brick building was built in 1914. Architect Andrew Sandegren, who also designed several Chicago apartment buildings, designed the building in the Tudor Revival style; Sandegren would go on to live in the building. The building features projecting entrance bays, an open central courtyard, and a crenellated roofline with projecting gables. Each apartment included amenities meant to cater to upper-class residents, such as servants' quarters, sunrooms, and brick fireplaces.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.

The Andridge Apartments is a historic apartment building located at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Church Street in Evanston, Illinois. The building was built in 1923 and designed by Robert C. Ostergren. The "S"-shaped building has two courtyards, a front courtyard facing Ridge Avenue and a rear courtyard for units on Church Street. The building was designed in the Tudor Revival style and features regularly spaced bays with gables, limestone trim, and Tudor arches around its entrances. On March 15, 1984, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Evanston Ridge Historic District is a residential historic district in Evanston, Illinois. The district is situated along a glacial ridge that was the site of the first white settlement in Evanston in the 1830s. As the development of Evanston accelerated in the mid-nineteenth century, the ridge became a desirable location for new residents, and the growth of Northwestern University and new rail links to Chicago continued to spur development into the twentieth century. As a result, the houses in the district were built over the course of several decades, with most built between 1860 and 1930. Wealthy Chicagoans were particularly drawn to the area, and its homes frequently had formal architectural designs. The Italianate, Queen Anne, and Prairie School styles are all particularly common in the district.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 3, 1983.

Ridgewood is a historic apartment building located at 1703–1713 Ridge Avenue (at Church Street) in Evanston, Illinois. The Chicago architectural firm of Atchison & Edbrooke designed the building in 1905; while the firm was only active from 1904 to 1908, it designed several buildings in Evanston. The building has a Prairie School design, a popular residential style at the time that was nonetheless unusual for an apartment complex. The three-story brick building is shaped in a "U" and features half-octagonal bays at regular intervals. Six apartments are on each floor; each features Prairie woodwork, cabinets built into the walls, and a fireplace.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 4, 1978.

Ridge Grove is a historic apartment building at 1112 Grove Street in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story brick building was built in 1928. Architect Edward M. Sieja designed the building, which incorporates geometric and Neoclassical elements. The building features a projecting section across most of its front facade, sidelights and a fan around the entrance, limestone trim, and piers at its corners. The lobby includes a mock fireplace to resemble the foyer of a house.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.

The George B. Dryden House is a historic house located at 1314 Ridge Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The house was built in 1916 for George B. and Ellen A. Dryden. George was a successful Chicago businessman, while Ellen was the heiress of George Eastman; together, the couple was worth over $9 million. Architect George W. Maher designed the Georgian Revival house. While Maher was better known as a Prairie School architect, the Drydens requested a Georgian design inspired by Ellen's memories of Eastman's home. The three-story house features an entrance portico supported by four Corinthian columns and topped by a pediment. The house is faced with brick and features quoins at the corners and keystones above the windows. A wooden frieze and cornice run below the base of the roof, which begins below the third floor and features several projecting dormers.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 18, 1978.

The Building at 1505–1509 Oak Avenue is a historic apartment building in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story brick building was built in 1925. The building is L-shaped with a half courtyard, a relatively common apartment layout in Evanston. Architect Samuel N. Crowen, who designed two other apartment buildings in Evanston, designed the building. The building's design features limestone pilasters separating its windows, limestone quoins, pilasters and a pediment around the entrance, and a brick parapet.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.

Fanny's Restaurant was a notable eatery located at 1601 Simpson Street Evanston, IL 60201 USA (the first suburb north of the Chicago City Limits) between 1946 and 1987. It was an anomaly in that it was located in a working-class neighborhood and yet known the world over. Patrons included the Marshall Field Family, of department store fame. Both the salad dressing and meat sauce won the International Epicurian Award of France. It was cited by Chicago Magazine as one of the top 40 Chicago restaurants ever. According to that same Chicago Magazine article Kraft Foods offered $75,000 in 1948 to buy Fanny's salad dressing recipe. This offer was refused. The restaurant was closed due to the deteriorating health of the founder, Fanny Lazar née Bianucci. According to the May 11, 1991 Chicago Sun Times and Chicago Tribune obituaries, Fanny Lazar died at Saint Francis Hospital of Evanston. At some point, possibly in the 1960s, Fanny's products became available on grocery shelves and the business continues on today through mail order. For several years the restaurant building at Simpson Street and Ashland Avenue was shuttered, then later occupied by rental tenants. During this period there was difficulty maintaining tenants because of what was described as ‘strange happenings’ and the claims that the building was haunted. However, during the condominium boom which occurred in the United States during the first ten years of the 21st Century it was heavily altered and converted into loft spaces. According to a July 5, 1998 Chicago Sun Times article a second version of the restaurant was opened in Union Pier, MI. It appears to remain in business as of 2011, as it can be found through searching local tourism web sites. Fanny's in Union Pier Michigan was located in the Gordon Beach Inn, It's no longer in business. Fanny's meat sauce and salad dressing can still be purchased through World Wide Food Products in Evanston, IL

The Building at 1316 Maple Avenue is a historic apartment building at 1316 Maple Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The three-story cream brick building was built in 1928. Architect Edward M. Sieja designed the building in the Tudor Revival style. The building's design includes limestone quoins, projecting bays, casement windows, and a parapet at the roof. The building's lobby features wooden ceiling beams and a mosaic tile floor, giving it the appearance of a castle's great hall.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1984.
