Dekabristov Island (Russian: остров Декабристов), or 'Decembrists' Island, known before 1926 as Goloday Island (остров Голодай – possibly a corruption of a British merchant name Halliday) is an island in Vasileostrovsky District of Saint Petersburg, Russia, to the north of Vasilyevsky Island, separated from it by Smolenka River (59°57′N 30°14′E). The island, originally low-lying and frequently flooded, all the same was traditionally used as a cemetery (see Smolensky Lutheran Cemetery). In the early Soviet period, the name was changed to Decembrists' Island to commemorate five executed leaders of Decembrist revolt, who were buried in an unmarked grave on Goloday. In 1911, a British investment company launched a development project on a 1 square-kilometer lot in western Goloday Island, hiring Ivan Fomin and Fyodor Lidval to design a neoclassical middle-classical neighborhood. A small part of this project was completed before World War I and the Russian revolution of 1917. Eastern and northern sides of the island were heavily industrialized; the western half of the island was built up with a Leonid Brezhnev-era highrise. Dekabristov Island is connected to Vasilievsky island (south) with five automobile bridges, and to the tiny Serny Island north from it. It is connected to the center of the city through Primorskaya station of Saint Petersburg Metro.

The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, or AARI (Russian: Арктический и антарктический научно-исследовательский институт, abbreviated as ААНИИ) is the oldest and largest Russian research institute in the field of comprehensive studies of Arctic and Antarctica. It is located in Saint Petersburg. The AARI has numerous departments, such as those of oceanography, glaciology, meteorology, hydrology or Arctic river mouths and water resources, geophysics, polar geography, and others. It also has its own computer center, ice research laboratory, experimental workshops, and a museum (the Arctic and Antarctic Museum). Scientists, such as Alexander Karpinsky, Alexander Fersman, Yuly Shokalsky, Nikolai Knipovich, Lev Berg, Otto Schmidt, Rudolf Samoylovich, Vladimir Vize, Nikolai Zubov, Pyotr Shirshov, Nikolai Urvantsev, and Yakov Gakkel have all made their valuable contributions to the work of the AARI. Throughout its history, the AARI has organized more than a thousand Arctic expeditions, including dozens of high-latitude aerial expeditions, which transported 34(?) manned drifting ice stations Severniy Polyus ("Северный полюс", or North Pole) to Central Arctic.

Ostrov Dekabristov Municipal Okrug (Russian: муниципа́льный о́круг Остров Декабристов) is a municipal okrug in Vasileostrovsky District, one of the eighty-one low-level municipal divisions of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 60,842, up from 53,882 recorded during the 2002 Census.

Vasileostrovsky District (Russian: Василеостро́вский райо́н) is a district of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 214,625; down from 236,856 recorded in the 2002 Census.

Smolensky Cemetery (Russian: Смоленское кладбище) is the oldest continuously operating cemetery in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It occupies a rectangular parcel in the western part of Vasilievsky Island, on the bank of the small Smolenka River, and is divided into the Orthodox, Lutheran, and Armenian sections.

The St. Petersburg River Yacht Club, also known as St. Petersburg Central River Yacht Club or simply Central River Yacht Club, is a sailing club in Saint Petersburg. It is located on Petrovsky Island, off Peter's Passage, between the mouths of Malaya Neva and Malaya Nevka rivers. The Naval Yacht Club is close by.

The Little Neva or Malaya Neva (Russian: Ма́лая Нева́) is the second largest distributary of the river Neva. The Neva splits into Great Neva (the southern armlet) and Little Neva (the northern armlet) near the Spit of Vasilievsky Island (easternmost tip of the island), in the historic centre of the city of Saint Petersburg. The Little Neva is 4.25 kilometres (2.64 mi) long; the width is from 200 to 400 metres (660 to 1,310 ft), and the depth is 3 to 7 metres (10 to 23 ft). It has its own armlets: Smolenka and Zhdanovka. There are three bridges across Little Neva: Exchange Bridge, Tuchkov Bridge and Betancourt Bridge.

The Little Nevka or Malaya Nevka (Russian: Ма́лая Не́вка) is the southern distributary of the Great Nevka. The Great Nevka splits into Little Nevka (the southern armlet) and Middle Nevka (the northern armlet) near the Kamenny Island's easternmost tip. It is also known for being the dumping ground of the famous Rasputin (of Russia) after his assassination. The Little Nevka is about 5 kilometres (3 mi) long; the width is from 120 to 300 metres (390 to 980 ft), and the depth is 3.5 to 7 metres (11 to 23 ft). It has its own armlets: Krestovka, Karpovka and Zhdanovka. There are four bridges across Little Nevka: Kamennoostrovsky Bridge, Lazarevsky Bridge, Big Krestovsky Bridge, Bolshoy Petrovsky Bridge.

The Neva ( NEE-və, UK also NAY-və; Russian: Нева́, IPA: [nʲɪˈva] (listen)) is a river in northwestern Russia flowing from Lake Ladoga through the western part of Leningrad Oblast (historical region of Ingria) to the Neva Bay of the Gulf of Finland. Despite its modest length of 74 kilometres (46 mi), it is the fourth-largest river in Europe in terms of average discharge (after the Volga, the Danube and the Rhine).The Neva is the only river flowing from Lake Ladoga. It flows through the city of Saint Petersburg, the three smaller towns of Shlisselburg, Kirovsk and Otradnoye, and dozens of settlements. It is navigable throughout and is part of the Volga–Baltic Waterway and White Sea–Baltic Canal. It is the site of many major historical events, including the Battle of the Neva in 1240 which gave Alexander Nevsky his name, the founding of Saint Petersburg in 1703, and the Siege of Leningrad by the German army during World War II. The river played a vital role in trade between Byzantium and Scandinavia.

The Kuryokhin Center, or more extended the Sergey Kuryokhin Center for Modern Art, is a non-profit cultural centre in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The centre was founded in 2004 and named after the Russian avant garde composer Sergey Kuryokhin. The main space of the centre has a capacity of 2000 people. The venue is located in an old cinema building.

The Smolenskoye Cemetery (in German Smolensker Friedhof) is a Lutheran cemetery on Dekabristov Island in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is one of the largest and oldest non-orthodox cemeteries in the city. Until the early 20th century it was one of the main burial grounds for ethnic Germans.

The Marine Station or Marine Terminal (Russian: Морской вокзал) is a marine passenger terminal in Saint Petersburg. It was opened in 1982 specifically for the reception and processing of cruise and ferry vessels. The station is located on the western tip of Vasilyevsky Island, at No. 1, Square of Maritime Glory. The complex includes five berths, a place for border and customs inspection, restaurant, hotel and conference complex.The station building was built between 1973 and 1983, designed by architects V. A. Sokhin and Leonid Kalyagin. The walls of the station are lined with volumetric panels in the form of sails; a ship is depicted on a 78-meter titanium spire. Originally the building was built for the Baltic Sea Steamship Company and served as both a station for visitors arriving by sea and as an inter-voyage base for the sailors of the shipping company.
