The Ironbound

East Side High School is a four-year public high school in Newark in Essex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, operating as part of the Newark Public Schools. The school serves the city's Ironbound neighborhood. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools since 1929 and is accredited until January 2026.As part of the East Side Opportunity Program, students can take Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs, and can earn an associates degree from Essex County College with courses taken in 11th and 12th grades.As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,163 students and 131.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 16.4:1. There were 1,443 students (66.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 250 (11.6% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church is a historic Roman Catholic parish church located within the Archdiocese of Newark at 164 Nichols Street in the Ironbound section of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The church was built in 1917 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The Portugal Day Festival in Newark, New Jersey is a street festival celebrating the Portuguese people, language, and their culture. First organized in 1979 by the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation, since 2010 the Festival has been organized by the Union of Portuguese American Clubs of New Jersey (União de Clubes Luso-Americanos de New Jersey), or UCLANJ. Although various events occur the week prior, the actual street festival typically takes place on the weekend closest to June 10, the official Portugal Day. As of 2015 the festival has been run by its official Portugal Day Newark a 501c (3) non-profit organization. The festival is known to attract over 750,000 event goers to Ferry Street in the Ironbound. The festival went on hiatus in 2020. Facts About Portugal: The cultural festival takes months of planning. Plans include inviting guests to be Grand Marshal, Honorary Grand Marshal, or any of the prized people in attendance over the Portugal Day weekend. There are also many events prior to the big weekend, such as the Friendship Night Gala, that bring out the Portuguese community.

Pan American C.M.A. Church (Christ Church) is a historic church at 76 Prospect Street in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1848 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

St. Stephan's Church is a historic church on Ferry Street and Wilson Avenue in the Ironbound section of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1874 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This was also the site of the alien ship rising up from beneath the street in the 2005 film, War of the Worlds. The recreated church front facing onto Merchant Street was mechanically designed to shear off and move as the earth shook before the alien craft emerged.

Second Reformed Dutch Church (also known as Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church; Ironbound Educational and Igreja Assembleia de deus) is a historic church building at 178-184 Edison Place in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1848 originally for a Dutch Reformed congregation. The building added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It has been home to several other congregations since its founding, including Igreja Assembleia de deus, an Assemblies of God congregation led by Pastor Welbr DosSantos.

Peter Francisco Park is a city square in Newark, New Jersey located adjacent to Newark Penn Station at the Five Corners in the city's Ironbound neighborhood. The park was established in 1966 by the Municipal Council of Newark.The park is named for Peter Francisco (July 7, 1760 – January 16, 1831), a Portuguese-born American patriot and soldier in the American Revolutionary War. It is home to several monuments, including one to the park's namesake, which was placed in 1976 during the United States Bicentennial.Its proximity to Penn Station has occasionally led to use of the park to provide assistance the homeless population in the area.The park is planned to be part of a connection between Mulberry Commons and Newark Riverfront Park.

The Murphy Varnish Works is located in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The company was established by Franklin Murphy (who served as the 31st governor of New Jersey from 1902–1905). The building was built in 1865 to manufacture varnish and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 9, 1979.

The Penn Plaza East complex takes its name for its location near Penn Station in Newark, New Jersey. Fronting Raymond Boulevard on the banks of the Passaic River, the two office buildings were constructed during a period in the late 1980s and early 1990s when they and numerous postmodern skyscrapers were built near the station and Gateway Center. While others went up between the station and traditional Downtown Newark, Penn Plaza East is on the Ironbound, or east, side of the major transportation hub. As of 2010, the buildings are occupied by the corporate headquarters of New Jersey Transit, JOC Group, and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, which owns their building.Originally developed and owned by Hartz Mountain Industries One building was later bought by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.The two towers sit above a four-story parking facility and lobby that joins them. An additional parking area in the shadow of the Dock Bridge will be developed as part Newark Riverfront Park a promenade along the banks of the river.

The Gateway Center is a commercial complex in Newark, New Jersey. Located downtown just west of Newark Penn Station between Raymond Boulevard and Market Street; McCarter Highway runs through the complex. Skyways and pedestrian malls interconnect all of the office towers, a Hilton Hotel, the train station, and the Newark Legal Center. Built in phases in the late 20th century the complex comprises some of the tallest buildings in the city, two designed by Victor Gruen Associates and two by Grad Associates.

Pennsylvania Station, also known as Newark Penn Station, is an intermodal passenger station in Newark, New Jersey. One of the New York metropolitan area's major transportation hubs, Newark Penn Station is served by multiple rail and bus carriers, making it the seventh busiest rail station in the United States, and the fourth busiest in the New York City metropolitan area. Located at Raymond Plaza between Market Street and Raymond Boulevard, the station is served by three NJ Transit commuter rail lines, the Newark Light Rail, the PATH rapid transit system, and all 11 of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor services, including the Acela. The station is also Newark's main intercity bus terminal; it is served by carriers Greyhound, Bolt, and Fullington Trailways. Additionally, it is served by 33 local and regional bus lines operated by NJ Transit Bus Operations and Coach USA (Orange-Newark-Elizabeth).

The Newark, New Jersey water crisis began in 2016 when elevated lead levels were observed in multiple Newark Public Schools district schools throughout the city.Multiple water studies were conducted by both federal agencies, such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and non-profit groups. The lead levels exceeded the limit of 15 parts per billion set by the Safe Drinking Water Act. As a result, the EPA ordered the City of Newark to provide bottled water and filters to affected customers. As of January 2020, more than 200,000 residents were affected by the elevated levels of lead.
