Newark ( NEW-ərk, locally [nʊəɹk]) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of New Jersey and the seat of Essex County. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 311,549, an increase of 34,409 (+12.4%) from the 2010 census count of 277,140, which in turn reflected an increase of 3,594 (+1.3%) from the 273,546 counted in the 2000 census. The Population Estimates Program calculated a population of 305,344 for 2022, making it the 66th-most populous municipality in the nation.Settled in 1666 by Puritans from New Haven Colony, Newark is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Its location at the mouth of the Passaic River (where it flows into Newark Bay) has made the city's waterfront an integral part of the Port of New York and New Jersey. Today, Port Newark–Elizabeth is the primary container shipping terminal of the busiest seaport on the U.S. East Coast. Newark Liberty International Airport was the first municipal commercial airport in the United States, and today is one of its busiest.Several companies have their headquarters in Newark, including Prudential, PSEG, Panasonic Corporation of North America, Audible.com, IDT Corporation, Manischewitz and AeroFarms. A number of higher education institutions are also in the city, including the Newark campus of Rutgers University (which includes law and medical schools and the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies); University Hospital (formerly the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey which included the schools of medicine and dentistry now under Rutgers University); the New Jersey Institute of Technology; and Seton Hall University's law school. The United States District Court for the District of New Jersey is also located in the city. Local cultural venues include the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Symphony Hall, the Prudential Center, The Newark Museum of Art, and the New Jersey Historical Society. Newark is divided into five political wards (East, West, South, North and Central) and contains neighborhoods ranging in character from bustling urban districts to quiet suburban enclaves. Newark's Branch Brook Park is the oldest county park in the United States and is home to the nation's largest collection of cherry blossom trees, numbering over 5,000.

The Newark, New Jersey water crisis began in 2016 when elevated lead levels were observed in multiple Newark Public Schools district schools throughout the city.Multiple water studies were conducted by both federal agencies, such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and non-profit groups. The lead levels exceeded the limit of 15 parts per billion set by the Safe Drinking Water Act. As a result, the EPA ordered the City of Newark to provide bottled water and filters to affected customers. As of January 2020, more than 200,000 residents were affected by the elevated levels of lead.

South Street is a closed station located along the Northeast Corridor in Newark, New Jersey. It served two lines of the Pennsylvania Railroad before closing. Construction on the station began in 1901, the original station had restrooms, a large waiting room, baggage facilities, a newsstand, and a telegraph office. The station replaced at-grade stations at Chestnut Street and Emmett Street.

Justice is a 1994 sculpture by Diana K. Moore. The large blindfolded head of the Greek titaness Themis is currently located in the courtyard in front of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Courthouse at the Government Center in Newark, New Jersey. The artwork was commissioned through the General Services Administration's Art in Architecture program in 1991. Justice is 11 ft (3.4 m) tall, 8.8 ft (2.7 m) wide, 9 ft (2.7 m) long, and made of cast concrete. Moore drew inspiration from the traditions of "Khmer pieces from Cambodia, Etruscan, early Greek, and Egyptian figures", the colossal head of Constantine the Great, African masks, Olmec statues, and Eastern motifs such as the figure of Buddha.A poem written by Mark Strand, the 1991 Poet Laureate of the United States is carved around the sculpture's base.

New Point Baptist Church is a historic church at 17 E. Kinney Street in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1849 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Frank R. Lautenberg Post Office and Courthouse is United States Post Office and courthouse of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey located in the Government Center area of Downtown Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. The building's cornerstone was laid in 1933 and the building was completed as a New Deal project in 1935. The building was named for U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg by an act of Congress in 2000.

Newark Symphony Hall is a performing arts center located at 1020 Broad Street in Newark, New Jersey. Built in 1925, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It was known for many years as The Mosque Theater, and is the former home of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey State Opera and the New Jersey Ballet Company.The Hall is owned by the Essex County Improvement Authority and is operated by the non-profit Newark Performing Arts Corporation (NPAC).

The U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey is the chief federal law enforcement officer in New Jersey. On December 16, 2021, Philip R. Sellinger was sworn in as U.S. Attorney. The U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey has jurisdiction over all cases prosecuted by the U.S. attorney.

Grace Church in Newark (Episcopal) is an active and historic Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Newark. It is located on Newark, New Jersey's Broad Street where it has stood since 1837. Grace is a traditional church that worships in the Catholic tradition. Grace is notable for its architecture, music, and as the birthplace of the tune "America the Beautiful".

South Park Calvary United Presbyterian Church is a historic church built in 1853 and located at 1035 Broad Street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Newark in Essex County, New Jersey. Only the facade remains, following a 1992 fire. Also known as the South Park Presbyterian Church, it was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1936. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 5, 1972, for its significance in architecture.
