Menemeni is a suburb of the Thessaloniki Urban Area and was a former municipality in the regional unit of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ampelokipoi-Menemeni, of which it is a municipal unit. It neighbors Evosmos, Ampelokipoi, Thessaloniki and Echedoros. Menemeni includes the quarters of Vosporos, Agios Nektarios, Dialogi and Lachanokipoi. According to the 2011 census the population was 14,746 inhabitants. The municipal unit has an area of 7.989 km2.

The Municipality of Thessaloniki (Greek: Δήμος Θεσσαλονίκης, Dímos Thessaloníkis) is the second largest municipality by population in Greece after the Municipality of Athens. According to the 2011 Greek census, it has a population of 324,766 inhabitants. The municipality includes the historical center (including the majority of the city's monuments) and about one third of the Thessaloniki Urban Area.

The Kingdom of Thessalonica (Greek: Βασίλειον τῆς Θεσσαλονίκης, romanized: Vasílion tis Thessaloníkis) was a short-lived Crusader State founded after the Fourth Crusade over conquered Byzantine lands in Macedonia and Thessaly.

The Thessaloniki metropolitan area or larger urban zone (LUZ) is the complete area covered and directly influenced by Thessaloniki. The metropolitan area traditionally consisted of the municipality of Thessaloniki and its immediate surroundings, what is today referred to as the Thessaloniki urban area. However, since the mid to late 1990s, the areas surrounding the urban area, have succumbed to urban sprawl and what used to be agrarian communities are rapidly urbanizing and being developed into suburbs or exurbs. This is creating new problems for a region already facing issues such as pollution, traffic congestion and social ills. Thessalonians usually refer to 6 municipalities and 1 municipal unit as the "City of Thessaloniki" (or the Thessaloniki urban area); this is the contiguous densely built-up urban area of the city. However, the metropolitan area also includes the city's immediate surroundings, adjacent zone of influence and its low to medium density suburbs that surround the densely built-up urban area. Thessaloniki spreads over 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Oraiokastro in the north to Thermi in the south.

The siege of Thessalonica in 254 was the successful defense of the city of Thessalonica by local Roman militia during an invasion of the Balkans by the Goths.

Egnatia Street (Greek: Οδός Εγνατίας) is the main commercial street in downtown Thessaloniki. The road is named for the Roman-era Via Egnatia which passed near the city. Lined with shops and office buildings, it is one of the busiest streets of Thessaloniki.

The Church of Saint Panteleimon (Greek: Ναός Αγίου Παντελεήμονα, Naós Agíou Panteleímona) is a late Byzantine church Built in the 14th century in Thessaloniki, Greece. Because of its well-preserved Byzantine architecture and its testimony to the importance of Thessaloniki to early and medieval Christianity, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 along with several other Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki.

The Church of the Saviour (Greek: Ναός του Σωτήρος, Naós tou Sotíros) is a 14th-century Byzantine chapel in Thessaloniki, Greece. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki. The church has been dated to about 1350, based on a coin found within its dome during archaeological investigations and restoration work following the 1978 Thessaloniki earthquake.

The Church of the Acheiropoietos (Greek: [Παναγία] Ἀχειροποίητος) is a 5th-century Byzantine church in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia. It is located in the city's centre, at Agias Sofias street opposite Makedonomachon square. Because of its outstanding early Byzantine architecture, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 along with other Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki.

The siege of Thessalonica in 676–678 was an attempt by the local Slavic tribes to capture the Byzantine city of Thessalonica, taking advantage of the preoccupation of the Byzantine Empire with the repulsion of the First Arab Siege of Constantinople. The events of the siege are described in the second book of the Miracles of Saint Demetrius.

Navarinou Square (Greek: Πλατεία Ναυαρίνου) is a square in the city of Thessaloniki in Greece. It is named after the Battle of Navarino, a crucial battle of the Greek War of Independence.

The Hagia Sophia (Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, Holy Wisdom) is a church located in Thessaloniki, Greece. With its current structure dating from the 7th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the city still standing today. Because of its outstanding Byzantine art and architecture, in addition to its importance in early Christianity, it is one of several monuments in Thessaloniki listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
