Lucketts Store

Lucketts is an unincorporated historic hamlet in Loudoun County, Virginia, along U.S. Route 15 north of Leesburg. It was originally known as "Black Swamp" due to the large number of black oak trees growing in the area at the time of its settlement. From the late 18th century until the mid-19th century, it was known as "Goresville" after the name of prominent local landowner, Thomas Gore. The name was finally changed to "Lucketts" in 1865. The town's Lucketts School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lucketts is approximately 7 miles (11 km) north of Leesburg and 18 miles (29 km) south of Frederick, Maryland. The Potomac River is between Lucketts and Frederick, approximately 4 miles (6 km) north on Route 15. The MARC commuter train makes frequent stops on the Maryland side in Point of Rocks. Train whistles of the freight trains at night and dawn are frequently heard throughout Lucketts. The village of Lucketts is visually cued by the traffic light at the intersection of Route 15, Lucketts Road, and Stumptown Road. Located there are antique stores, a gas station, a few residential homes and trailer parks, fire house, Lucketts Elementary School, and a cell phone tower. The Lucketts School, now the Lucketts Community Center, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Traffic going through Lucketts on Route 15 was approximately 18,000 to 21,000 vehicles per day as of 2005.Lucketts is known for its annual fair in August, with crafts, food and hand-churned ice cream sold by the Lucketts Elementary School PTA. The Lucketts Community Center, located in the original wooden Lucketts School has a day care service, pre-school, adult activities, and since 1974, bluegrass concerts every Saturday night at 7:00 PM from October through April.

The Lucketts School in Lucketts, Virginia was built in 1913. It is a wood-frame schoolhouse with elements of Colonial Revival and Craftsman style. It was originally known as Lucketts High School and was expanded in 1919 with additional classrooms and in 1929 with a small auditorium. It was one of the first multi-room schools in Loudoun County, and remains one of the best-preserved early 20th century schools in the county. The last high school students graduated from Lucketts in 1938, but the school was used as an elementary school until 1972 when a new Lucketts Elementary School was built on an adjoining site. Education still continues here in the form of certified child care offered to residents of Loudoun County. In an effort to preserve the old school for community use the first Lucketts Fair was held in 1972, a tradition which continued until 2018 as a means of financing the maintenance of the building. It is now operated as the Lucketts Community Center by the Loudoun County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Chestnut Hill is an 18th-century Federal-style mansion north of Leesburg in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. Chestnut Hill was a home of Thomson Francis Mason (1785–21 December 1838), a prominent jurist, lawyer, councilman, judge, mayor of Alexandria, and grandson of Founding Father of the United States George Mason. Chestnut Hill was also a home of Mason's son, Dr. John "Frank" Francis Mason (28 August 1828–4 August 1897). It is located at 13263 Chestnut Hill Lane near Leesburg.

Temple Hall is an early 19th-century Federal-style mansion and working farm near the Potomac River north of Leesburg in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Heater's Island Wildlife Management Area is a Wildlife Management Area in Frederick County, Maryland. Heater's Island is a large forested island in the Potomac River near Point of Rocks, Maryland. It was long inhabited by the Piscataway people, who were forced to leave by smallpox in 1705.

The Islands of the Potomac Wildlife Management Area is a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consisting of 30 islands in the Potomac River in Maryland along its border with the state of Virginia. It is administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Islands of the Potomac WMA protects 824 acres (3.33 km2) of wildlife habitat in Allegany (80 acres [0.32 km2]), Washington (6 acres [0.024 km2]), Frederick (223 acres [0.90 km2]) and Montgomery (515 acres [2.08 km2]) counties. The islands are accessible only by boat. Within the WMA is established the Islands of the Potomac Wildland (see Maryland Wildland), consisting of about 82% (676 acres [2.74 km2]) of the total area. Of the 30 islands, three in Montgomery County are open to public hunting: Oxley Island, Mason Island and Maddox Island.

Taylorstown is a small community in Loudoun County, Virginia, built on the banks of Catoctin Creek and the surrounding hillside, about two miles (3 km) south of the Potomac River. First settled in 1734, it holds two of the oldest standing houses in Loudoun County, "Hunting Hill" and "Foxton Cottage", directly across the Catoctin Creek from each other. The Taylorstown Historic District, comprising the core of the village, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 30, 1978 and expanded in 2005.

The Taylorstown Historic District comprises the historic core of Taylorstown, Virginia. The community and the historic district are centered on the Taylorstown Mill, a two-story stone structure on the banks of Catoctin Creek. Up the hill from the mill is Hunting Hill, a house built in 1737 for the mill's owner. The district also includes a store built in 1800, adjoined by the 1904 Mann's Store, with the 1900 Mann house across the street. The town center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 30, 1978. The district was expanded on May 26, 2005.

Annington is a historic home located at Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The house is constructed of brick, Flemish bond, consisting of three two-story sections: a main block three bays wide, a wing to the west two bays wide, and a wing to the east three bays wide. The house was built during the wheat boom of the early 1810s that the western counties of Maryland and nearby Virginia experienced with the opening of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The Georgian house was built in about 1813, for Daniel Trundle, a planter, and member of the Maryland State Legislature for ten years. The site is a commanding one, overlooking the Potomac River, and during the American Civil War was a strategic lookout point and occupied by Union officers.Annington was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Catoctin County is the name of a proposed new county in Northern Virginia that would be formed from the western portions of Loudoun County. The movement to form the new county began in 2005 with a letter to The Washington Post.Under the proposal, the area of Loudoun County west of the Catoctin Mountain watershed, known as the Loudoun Valley would be separated from the portion of the county east of that watershed. The eastern portion of Loudoun would retain its name and county government. Purcellville would become the seat of the new county's government. Its name is derived from the Catoctin Mountain whose watershed would make its eastern border and Catoctin Creek which flows through its proposed boundary.The idea of Catoctin County began as a movement to combat the rapid development of the historically rural western region of Loudoun County, one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States in the 1990s. In general though, the heaviest development has been to the east of Catoctin Mountain in eastern Loudoun. Support for the movement waned, though it resurfaced in 2012 with the proposed extension of the Metro Silver Line, resulting in increased taxation on Loudoun residents.
