Killing of Messiah Nantwi

On December 9, 2024, Robert Brooks, a 43-year-old black man, was transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy Correctional Facility, both in New York state, where he was repeatedly beaten by prison officers. Brooks died from his injuries the following morning on December 10 at Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York. Body camera footage showed that Brooks was handcuffed and had a prior facial injury and appeared to be compliant before being fatally beaten. Brooks died due to compression of the neck and multiple blunt force injuries. After an internal review, Governor of New York State Kathy Hochul directed the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (NYSDOCCS) to fire 13 officers and a prison nurse involved in the incident. On February 20, 2025, second-degree murder, gang assault, manslaughter, and tampering with evidence charges were brought against six prison officers. Seventeen employees, including four sergeants and two nurses, were suspended. Four others faced varying charges including manslaughter and evidence tampering.

Mid-State Correctional Facility is located in the Town of Marcy, between the cities of Rome and Utica in New York State. From about 1912 through 1982 the state ran a state asylum on these grounds. That institution would grow to hold 3,000 patients. Mid-State opened as a correctional institution, in the extensive former hospital buildings, in 1983.Mid-State has grown and now includes maximum security SHU-200, opened in 1998. These blocks are called "S" blocks, and consist of prisoners living in cells with bunk beds. These prisoners are let out into their porches for several hours, numerous times throughout every day. The place where they are allowed to go outside mimics their room except that it is outside, and surrounded by a fence. Even though Mid-State has a maximum security building it is still classified as a medium security prison. Mid-State cleared the way for its neighbor, Marcy Correctional Facility, located across the street, and two others, the Oneida Correctional Facility, closed about 2011, and Mohawk Correctional Facility.

The Central New York Psychiatric Center (CNYPC) is a maximum-security forensic psychiatric hospital in Marcy, New York, United States. Part of the New York State Office of Mental Health, it bears responsibility for mental health services in all prisons of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). Mentally ill prisoners may be involuntarily committed to CNYPC. Sex offenders are also civilly confined there. In addition to the hospital in Marcy, it maintains satellite units in prisons throughout New York State. CNYPC shares an address with Mid-State Correctional Facility and is adjacent to Marcy Correctional Facility.

Marcy is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 8,777 at the 2020 census. The town was named after Governor William L. Marcy. It lies between the cities of Rome and Utica. The Erie Canal passes through the southern part of the town. The town is home to the SUNY Polytechnic Institute, a four-year public research university in the southeastern part of town.

Marcy Correctional Facility is a medium-security state prison for males in Marcy, Oneida County, New York. To some extent Marcy specializes in providing alcohol and drug treatment programs. All of Marcy is on one level; there are no stairs, making it especially suitable for disabled prisoners. It also has a higher-than-average number of vocational programs. One building was built with "classrooms" for lessons in how to clean an office and a toilet (with working toilet), lay bricks, repair electrical devices, and the like. It has a full-sized football field surrounded by a track. The biggest room at the prison is the basketball court, also used, with portable chairs and tables, for presentations. The gym has a large waiting area, benches in a room. The prison is located across the street from the Central New York Psychiatric Center, where incarcerated prisoners from state and local jurisdictions can be held and treated, and the Mid-State Correctional Facility. A separate medium security housing unit, the Residential Mental Health Unit (RMHU), is located within Marcy. The RMHU unit houses inmates with lengthy disciplinary sanctions who also suffer with severe mental health issues. The RMHU unit has its own fence that separates it from the rest of the facility. Midstate and Marcy are on opposite sides of the highway, and as both are set back from the road, it is easily 1⁄4 mile (0.25 miles (0.40 km)) between the two prisons' gates. The Psychiatric Center houses sex offenders civilly committed.

Oriskany Creek is a 33-mile-long (53 km) river in New York, United States. It rises in Madison County and flows northeastward, primarily through Oneida County. Oriskany Creek is a tributary of the Mohawk River and therefore part of the Hudson River watershed. Oriskany Creek is wide and shallow, affording passage to only canoes, and that for only part of its length. The creek is known for its brown trout, which are caught from the shore or by wading.

Marcy is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Marcy, Oneida County, New York, United States. It was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census.The CDP is in eastern Oneida County, in the southern part of the town of Marcy. It is 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Utica and 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Rome. The hamlet of Maynard is in the eastern part of the CDP. Interstate 90, the New York Thruway, passes through Marcy, but with no direct access. New York State Route 49, the Utica–Rome Expressway, runs the length of the community, with access from one exit in the center of the CDP, as well as exits at the eastern and western ends of the CDP. The Erie Canal forms the southern border of the community.

Oriskany ( or ) is a village in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 1,400 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Iroquois word for "nettles". The Village of Oriskany is in the Town of Whitestown, southeast of the City of Rome. NY-69 passes through the village, which is south of the Erie Canal.

Jones Creek is a left-bank tributary (stream) that flows into the Mohawk River in Whitesboro, New York.

Neck "Canal" of 1730 is a historic navigation channel located at Marcy in Oneida County, New York. It comprised the extant remains of a "canal" dug in 1730 to improve navigation along the Mohawk River. It was a short, hand dug channel cut across one of the many oxbows that once characterized the river in the 18th and 19th century. The channel was three feet deep, 20 feet wide, and 200 feet long.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
