Knotts Creek is a 3.0-mile-long (4.8 km) tidal inlet on the south shore of the Nansemond River in the city of Suffolk, Virginia, in the United States.

Pughsville is a community in Virginia. It was part of Nansemond County, Virginia which ceased to exist when it was merged into Suffolk, Virginia in the 1970s. The Pughsville community is now in the northern part of Suffolk, Virginia along the border with Chesapeake, Virginia. Pughsville is served by Nansemond River High School. The actor James Avery, who portrayed Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, was born there. It is located in the area of Suffolk, Virginia and Chesapeake, Virginia. It is a woodsy area where African-Americans settled. The origins of the name are unclear. A road through the area, Pughsville Road / SR 659, shares the Pughsville name along with Old Pughsville Road which runs into Chesapeake. Pughsville Park has a playground and looping trail. Pughsville is home to the New Hope Baptist Church. A 1949 report from a union meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey lists a Veneer Box and Barrel Workers Union in Pughsville.The area has been served by rail lines.Drainage issues have been a problem in the area.

The Nansemond River is a 19.8-mile-long (31.9 km) tributary of the James River in Virginia in the United States. Virginian colonists named the river for the Nansemond tribe of Native Americans, who had long inhabited the area. They continue as a federally recognized tribe in Virginia. The river begins at the outlet of Lake Meade north of downtown Suffolk, which had historically marked the northern boundary of the city. The Nansemond River Light once signaled the river's confluence with the James. The Nansemond River Bridge, once a toll bridge and part of U.S. Route 17, crosses the river near its mouth. Two other bridges cross the river, one from downtown Suffolk and one on Route 58. The Nansemond National Wildlife Refuge is located along the river.

Bennett Creek or Bennett's Creek is a 7.3-mile-long (11.7 km) tributary of the Nansemond River in Suffolk, Virginia. Bennett's Creek Park offers two free boat ramps that access the Nansemond River, a playground, tennis courts, restrooms, three covered shelters that can be reserved for use, a nature trail, open fields, a fishing and crabbing pier with handicap accessible features, and plenty of fresh air and sunshine. A 2.6-mile-long (4.2 km) canoe trail begins at the park boat ramp, passing through a tranquil salt marsh. Otter, raccoon, and nesting osprey are some of the wildlife viewing opportunities. The trail terminates at the confluence of the Nansemond River.

Western Branch High School is a suburban high school in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA. Established in 1968, it currently has over 2200 students. The two feeder schools of WBHS are Joliff Middle School and Western Branch Middle School. After it was determined that redistricting due to the opening of Grassfield High School was not going to impact WBHS, a $40,000,000 construction project was funded to accommodate the larger student body and modernize the technology and facilities. This construction included a two-story wing, providing natural lighting for the students, and renovation of the rest of the school. The construction was finished in early September 2010, while the renovation of the existing school was finished in the middle 2010-2011 school year.

The Nansemond River Light was a screwpile lighthouse located at the confluence of the Nansemond and James rivers in Virginia.

Hoffler Creek is a 2.1-mile-long (3.4 km) tidal inlet of the James River on its southern side in Hampton Roads. It forms the boundary between the cities of Portsmouth and Suffolk, Virginia. The mouth of the creek is between the Nansemond River to the west and Craney Island to the east. Normally a tranquil salt marsh, the estuary can change dramatically with tide, wind and rain. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused significant flooding into yards abutting the creek. Less dramatic flooding occurs with Nor'easter storms, which often last several days.

The Battle of Pig Point, Virginia was an early naval battle of the American Civil War, after Lincoln had extended the Union blockade to include Virginia. On June 5, 1861, the Union gunboat USRC Harriet Lane under Captain John Faunce was ordered to attack Pig Point, but due to shallow water, the shots fell short, and the Union suffered five men wounded before withdrawing.

Western Branch is a community located in the independent city of Chesapeake, Virginia (formerly Norfolk County) in the United States. It is located in the South Hampton Roads region and consists of generally low-lying sandy terrain of the coastal plain. Its namesake, the western branch of the Elizabeth River, defines the area's eastern boundary. Western Branch is the northernmost borough of Chesapeake.

The Nansemond River Bridge, officially the Mills E. Godwin Bridge, is located in the independent city of Suffolk, Virginia and carries U.S. Route 17 across the Nansemond River. The current bridge, opened in 1982, was named in honor of former Virginia governor Mills E. Godwin Jr., a prominent member of the Chuckatuck community. The 1982 structure replaced an earlier one built in 1928 by the James River Bridge Corporation as part of a three-bridge system privately funded to be paid for through toll revenues. The others were the original James River Bridge and the Crittenden Bridge (also known as the Chuckatuck Creek Bridge), each of which was also replaced with newer structures during the last quarter of the 20th century.
