The Santa Monica Alternative School House (SMASH) is an alternative school in Southern California that was founded in 1973 to emphasize "non-authoritarian, non-competitive, non-sexist methods". Originally serving grades Kindergarten through 12th, SMASH downgraded to a Kindergarten through middle school curriculum in the late 1980s. In 2005–2006, SMASH had 193 students enrolled in grades K-8. SMASH is a school in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. They use a constructivist approach to learning that provides opportunities for students to "take ownership of their education". SMASH does not grade students on their performance and instead provides feedback through narrative report cards and parent-teacher conferences.The school divides classes into "cores" of mixed age grouping which allow for mentoring and a strongly interconnected curriculum and community. Core 1 consists of kindergartners, first and second graders. Core 2 consists of third and fourth graders. Core 3 consists of fifth and sixth graders, and Core 4 of seventh and eighth graders.In 2016, SMASH was placed on a list of 1,000 low-performing California schools as a result of its 2013 standardized testing scores.

The Merle Norman House is an historic ocean view estate built for cosmetics magnate Merle Norman located at 2523 Third Street in Santa Monica, California. It was constructed during the Great Depression in 1935 with a mix of Mediterranean Revival and Art Deco designed by architect Ellis G. Martin.The 4,722 square foot estate includes a sweeping staircase leads to the living room, which spans the front of the house. A dining room, a library/study room, a den, a breakfast room, four bedrooms and five bathrooms are among the living spaces. It also includes a guest room and courtyard. The master suite features Pacific Ocean views, a sitting room, two bathrooms and a circular dressing room. The house was designated as Santa Monica Historic Landmark 32 on June 10, 1996. It sold in 2015 for $4.1 million.

The Parkhurst Building is a historic two-story commercial building in Santa Monica, California. It was built in 1927 for Clinton Gordon Parkhurst, a realtor who served as the mayor of Venice, California in the 1920s. It was designed principally by Herbert Powell of Marsh, Smith & Powell in the Mission Revival style, with an octagonal tower, gargoyles above the second-story windows, and a cupola at the top. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since November 17, 1978.

Pacific Ocean Park was a 28-acre (11-hectare) nautical-themed amusement park built on a pier at Pier Avenue in the Ocean Park section of Santa Monica, California in 1958. Intended to compete with Disneyland, it replaced Ocean Park Pier (1926-1956). After it closed and fell into disrepair, the park and pier anchored the Dogtown area of Santa Monica.

Horatio West Court, built in Santa Monica, California in 1919, is an early example of attached houses with shared pedestrian and vehicle access. The six little buildings are grouped on a 60-foot lot. It was designed by Irving Gill. Horatio West Court divides its narrow lot symmetrically, placing two units on either side of a driveway that runs the length of the lot to a rear parking area, where two garages are topped with little apartments. Each building is a slightly inflected, flat-roofed two-story cube to which a small entrance porch and a walled terrace has been added. The arched entry ways and small patio courts reflect Gill's affinity for the Mission Revival style. However, the buildings themselves fall squarely into the Modern Movement. Richard Neutra extensively photographed the Horatio West Court as well as Gill's Dodge House and published in his book Amerika: Neues Bauen in der Welt (1930). In Leland Roth's American Architecture: A History, the Horatio West Court is described as "Gill's flat-roof crisply-rectilinear apartment complex." [1] In Coastal California, John A. Vlahides and Tullan Spitz describe the complex as "one of the best examples of Irving Gill's revolutionary modernism." [2] The Horatio West Court was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, the first building in the City of Santa Monica to be listed in the National Register.

The Dome Pier on the Pacific Ocean at Ocean Park, Los Angeles County, California, United States, stood from 1922 until it was destroyed in the 1924 Ocean Park pier fire. Built by businessman Charles J. Lick, the amusement pier was also known as Lick's Dome Pier and was home to the Dome Theater and Bon-Ton Ballroom. The pier stood on what was then the borderline between Venice and Santa Monica, with the pier being mostly in Venice "except for six feet of dressing room space" in the Dome Theater, which stood in Santa Monica.
