Machicomoco State Park

Timberneck is a historic home located near Wicomico, Gloucester County, Virginia. It was built about 1810, and is a two-story, three-bay, gable roofed frame dwelling in the Georgian style. The main house was enlarged by the addition of a frame wing in the mid-19th century.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Powhatan's Chimney is located at present day Wicomico, in Gloucester County, Virginia, United States. Powhatan's Chimney was long considered clue to the site of Werowocomoco, a capital village of Chief Powhatan in what is now Virginia. According to English colonist Captain John Smith, Werowocomoco was located on the north side of the York River about 25 miles (40 km) from where the river divided at West Point, Virginia, at the time the Jamestown Settlement was established in 1607. Soon after in 1609, Chief Powhatan relocated his capital to a more inland location for better security. The exact location of Werowocomoco was lost through changes in settlement patterns. The Powhatan Confederacy and its people were largely displaced by English settlers by the middle of the 17th century. Legend tells that Powhatan's Chimney was from a house that Smith built at Werowocomoco for the chief. The chimney's collapse in 1888 led to the growth of a preservation movement, and the founding of Preservation Virginia (formerly known as the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities). It was organized to protect and preserve other historic resources. This organization reconstructed the chimney in the 1930s in the belief that it represented the historic site of Powhatan's residence at his capital.In 1977, an archaeologist found ground-surface artifacts at a site further west on the York River on Purtan Bay that indicated a late Woodland/early European contact-era settlement. A 2002 archaeological survey revealed extensive artifacts on what may have been a 50-acre (200,000 m2) settlement, with habitation from the 13th to the 17th century. Archaeologists and anthropologists believe this is the site of Werowocomoco. Since 2003, a team of researchers has excavated and found evidence of a substantial settlement, with earthworks built around the early 15th century, more than 200 years before the English arrived. Representatives of local Virginia Indian tribes, descendants of the Powhatan Confederacy, are part of the team. In 2006 the Werowocomoco Archeological Site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Scholars hope to find more evidence about the political nature of the chiefdom through additional excavations. Both the newly identified site on Purtan Bay and Powhatan's Chimney are located within an area which the Native Americans may have considered as Werowocomoco, as their meaning was a general area of lands and not a specific place.

Ordinary is an unincorporated community in Gloucester County, Virginia, United States. Ordinary is located along U.S. Route 17 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of Gloucester Point. Ordinary has a post office with ZIP code 23131.The community was named after the local ordinary (i.e. public dining hall). Woodville School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Woodville School is a historic Rosenwald school building located at Ordinary, Gloucester County, Virginia. It was built in 1923, and is a high one-story, five-bay, symmetrical frame structure. It measures 63 feet, 6 inches, by 28 feet, 6 inches, and sheathed in white painted clapboard. It was converted to residential use after 1942. Also on the property are a contributing guesthouse or additional school building and a small shed.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Fairfield plantation was a historic tobacco plantation from 17th century Colony of Virginia, owned by the Burwell family of Virginia from 1642 to 1787. The house was destroyed in 1897 due to fire. It is now an archaeological site that also includes slave quarters, a large formal garden, and the Burwell family cemetery. Archaeological research has been led by the Fairfield Foundation archaeologists David Brown And Thane Harpole.Built in 1694, the brick manor at Fairfield was described as what was once "the most sophisticated sophisticated classical house built in British North America to that date" by Cary Carson, retired Colonial Williamsburg research chief. It was built to emulate the houses of the gentry in London.The house had Flemish-bond brick walls and a 62-foot veranda on the front of the structure that overlooked the large formal garden. It had extra-large rectangular sash windows, and the first known use of a hipped roof with dormers in the colony. At the time the house was built, most of the other buildings were built on posts sunk in the earth. Fairfield Plantation became a National Register of Historic Places listing on July 16, 1973. It is also a Virginia Historic Landmark as of February 20, 1973.

Abingdon Church is a historic Episcopal church located near White Marsh, Gloucester County, Virginia. It and its glebe house are among the oldest buildings in Virginia and were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.The parish was established shortly after the founding of Gloucester County in 1651, to serve the county's southern portion along the York River, and a church was built near the current site on land donated by Col. Augustine Warner Jr., who twice served as speaker of Virginia's House of Burgesses. His daughter Mildred would marry Laurence Washington of Westmoreland County to the north, and her grandson would become George Washington. The glebe (land to support the parish priest) is about four miles from the church, just inside the boundaries of neighboring Ware Parish, as rector Thomas Hughes noted in a letter to the Bishop of London in 1724. The rector of Abingdon parish taught at the Peasley School, administered by both parishes. Thus, the glebe house, built around 1700, is older than the current parish church and is one of the earliest examples of a hipped roof in the state, as well as being one of the most well-preserved after restoration circa 1954.Though many Gloucester County records burned in either 1820 or 1865, a contract to expand the Abingdon church was discussed in 1751, and the current one-story brick church was probably finished in 1754 or 1755. The church has a Latin cross plan with gable roof, pedimented gable ends and modillioned cornice. Col. Lewis Burwell donated a communion set made in London in 1702 to the parish, which remains in use today. The church interior features an elaborate reredos. Following the disestablishment of the Episcopal Church in Virginia in 1802, the building fell into disrepair, although Methodists worshipped at Abingdon Church 1818–1822, and an Episcopal congregation was re-formed in 1826 and repaired the church in 1841. Federal troops occupied the church and caused damage, so it was also repaired in 1868, 1897 and 1950.

Wicomico is an unincorporated community in Gloucester County, in the U. S. state of Virginia. The local historic home Timberneck was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Rosewell Plantation in Gloucester County, Virginia, was for more than 100 years the home of a branch of the Page family, one of the First Families of Virginia. Begun in 1725, the Flemish bond brick Rosewell mansion overlooking the York River was one of the most elaborate homes in the American colonies. In Mansions of Virginia, the architectural historian Thomas Tileston Waterman described the plantation house as "the largest and finest of American houses of the colonial period." Through much of the 18th century and 19th centuries, and during the American Civil War, Rosewell plantation hosted the area's most elaborate formal balls and celebrations. The home burned in 1916. In 1793, the Page family sold part of the Rosewell plantation to the Catlett family, who erected a house called "Timberneck", which still stands inside Virginia's 40th state park, Machicomico State Park. The Timberneck house, like Rosewell, has been the subject of archeological excavations, but unlike Rosewell, is being renovated by the Fairfield Foundation and volunteers, pursuant to an agreement with the Commonwealth of Virginia which envisions future lodging opportunities within the historic structure.

Carters Cove is an unincorporated community in Gloucester County, in the U. S. state of Virginia. To the inhabitants of Carters Cove it is known as "The Cove" or just "Cove".

The Pages Rock Light was a lighthouse located in the York River in the Chesapeake Bay.
