Burley House

The Park was a cricket ground situated in the grounds of the mansion of George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea at Burley-on-the-Hill in Rutland. It was used for first-class cricket in 1790, when an early all-England team played a Hampshire team. The fixture was repeated the following year. Also in 1791, an Old Etonians side played the Marylebone Cricket Club. In 1792 the Earl of Winchilsea's XI played Assheton Smith's XI. In 1793, England played a Surrey team at the ground. The final first-class match held on the ground was during the same year when the Earl of Winchilsea's XI played R Leigh's XI. The final recorded match held on the ground was in 1814 when Rutland played Nottingham.The grounds of the mansion has been used for occasional cricket matches in recent decades including in 1994 the Lord's Taverners against a Rutland XI to mark 300 years since the house was constructed.

Holy Cross Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Burley, Rutland, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It stands adjacent to Burley-on-the-Hill House.

Burley, or Burley-on-the-Hill, is a village and civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is located two miles (3 km) north-east of Oakham. The population of the civil parish was 577 at the 2001 census, including Egleton, but reducing to 325 at the 2011 census. The village's name means 'wood/clearing with a fortification'.In the parish, north of the village, is Alstoe, the site of a possible small motte-and-bailey castle, and part of the deserted medieval village of Alsthorpe. Alstoe was the name of a hundred. In 1379 Sir Thomas le Despenser granted the Burley manor to trustees, two of whom were his brother Henry, Bishop of Norwich and his nephew Hugh le Despenser. Thomas died without issue in 1381, when at the outbreak of the Peasants' Revolt, Henry was at Burley and travelled to Norwich to confront the rebels.The Old Smithy on the village green was used in advertisements for Cherry Blossom shoe polish in the 1920s. HM Prison Ashwell was located about one mile (2 km) west of the centre of the village on what was previously the site of a World War II US Army base, home to part of the 82nd Airborne Division. Ashwell Prison closed in March 2011 and has been redeveloped as Oakham Enterprise Park, a business park for office and light industrial use.

Burley and Rushpit Woods is a 161.2 hectares (398 acres) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in the parish of Burley, east of Oakham in Rutland.These woods on upper Lias clay have many mature and over-mature trees and considerable dead wood. The dominant tree is oak in most of the forest, giving way to ash in the remainder. The lichens are of regional importance, and the invertebrates include one Red Data Book and five nationally scarce species.The woods are private land with no public access.

Burley Castle, more commonly called Alstoe, was to the north of the village of Burley, two miles north-east of Oakham in the county of Rutland, grid reference SK894119. Alstoe was the name of a hundred.It was originally used as a Saxon moot (c.7th century-11th century). There is doubtful evidence of a small motte and bailey castle of the late 11th or early 12th century (between 1086 and 1153). Only earthworks remain.

Oakham was a rural district in Rutland, England from 1894 to 1974, covering the north of the county. The rural district had its origins in the Oakham Rural Sanitary District, formed in 1875. Oakham RSD had an identical area to Oakham poor law union, and consisted of thirty-one civil parishes of which twenty-nine were in Rutland and two in Leicestershire. The Local Government Act 1894 redesignated the area as Oakham Rural District, at the same time transferring the Leicestershire parishes of Cold Overton and Knossington to Melton Mowbray Rural District. The rural district included the town of Oakham until 1911, when it was constituted as Oakham Urban District. The Rural District Council continued to be based in the town, however, at Catmose.

HM Prison Ashwell was a Category C men's prison located in the parish of Burley, in the county of Rutland, England. The site of the former prison is located about two miles south of the centre of the village of Ashwell, alongside the road to Oakham and opposite the former kennels of the Cottesmore Hunt. The prison closed in 2011 and Rutland County Council acquired it from the Ministry of Justice in early 2013. The site has been redeveloped as Oakham Enterprise Park, a business park for office and light industrial use.

St Edmund's Church is a church in Egleton, Rutland. It is a Grade I listed building.

Egleton is a small village and civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is situated south east of Oakham, and is close to the western shore of Rutland Water. The population of the village remained less than 100 at the 2011 census and was included with the parish of Burley. St Edmund's Church, the Church of England parish church, is a Grade I listed building. It has a notable Norman tympanum.The village's name means 'farm/settlement of Ecgwulf'.Shallow lagoons of the reservoir come close to the village on the south and east and more are planned as a result of increased take of supplies from Rutland Water. An area of ancient meadows, rich in orchids, lies to the east. The Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre is here and the British Birdwatching Fair was held in the parish.

The British Birdwatching Fair or Birdfair is an annual event for birdwatchers, held every August at Rutland Water in England, run by staff and volunteers from the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. The birdfairs in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic and in November 2021 the fair was permanently discontinued over financial concerns. By January 2022, however, one of the original conceivers of the Birdfair, Tim Appleton MBE, announced a new event under the guise of 'Global BirdFair'. In March 2022 an official announcement was made that Global Birdfair would take place at a new location, Rutland Showground, from 15–17 July. It has been described as "the birder's Glastonbury". A large number of suppliers of binoculars, cameras, books, clothing and other birdwatching equipment, plus artists and tour companies, display and sell their wares. There are also lectures and other attractions. The first fair was held in 1989. All the organisers' profits are donated to a charity, Birdlife International. Prior to the 2008 fair, visitors had contributed £1,488,000 to international bird conservation. The 2018 fair raised £322,000, making a total of £4,679,152 since the inception.Other countries are replicating the fair, including the South American Bird Fair, which was first held in 2010 and the Amazon Birding Fest since 2019.

Rutland Water is a reservoir in Rutland, England, east of Rutland's county town, Oakham. It is filled by pumping from the River Nene and River Welland, and provides water to the East Midlands. By surface area it is the largest reservoir in England, but its capacity is exceeded by that of Kielder Water in Northumberland. Its maximum depth is 33m (108 ft). Set in 3,100 acres (13 km2) of countryside, it has a 23-mile (37 km) perimeter track, (17-mile (27 km) excluding Hambleton Peninsula) for walking or cycling. Since the water is drawn upon when needed, the relative areas of land and water vary a little, but the flatter parts of the lake margin are enclosed by banks so that the wetland nature reserve is maintained (grid reference SK886073). A 1,555 hectare area of lake and shore is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a Nature Conservation Review site. An area of 1,333 hectares is Ramsar, an internationally important wetland site, and 393 hectares at the western end is managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.

The Oakham Canal ran from Oakham, Rutland to Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire in the East Midlands of England. It opened in 1802, but it was never a financial success, and it suffered from the lack of an adequate water supply. It closed after 45 years, when it was bought by the Midland Railway to allow the Syston and Peterborough Railway to be built, partly along its course. Most of it is infilled, although much of its route can still be seen in the landscape, and there are short sections which still hold water.
