Kakinada Rural mandal is one of the 21 mandals in the Kakinada district of the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It has its headquarters at Kakinada. The mandal is bounded by Samalkota mandal, Pedapudi mandal, Karapa mandal, Kothapalle mandal and waters of Bay of Bengal.

Kakinada (; formerly known as Cocanada) is a port city and municipal corporation in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Situated along the Bay of Bengal, it serves as the headquarters of Kakinada district and is a prominent economic and cultural centre in the region. It is the sixth most populous city in the state and is recognised as one of India's most livable and cleanest cities among those with a population under one million. During the colonial era, the city also gained importance as the starting point of the Buckingham Canal, a vital route for trade and transportation. In modern times, Kakinada's economy is driven by industries such as fertilizer production, edible oil refining, natural gas extraction, food processing, IT, and power generation. The city also plays a vital role in the Krishna-Godavari Basin, serving as a key hub for petrochemical companies. Culturally, Kakinada is known for its iconic sweet, Kakinada Kaja, and has been the hometown of several notable personalities in Telugu cinema. Historically, Telugu migrants to countries like Burma and Malaysia were referred to as "Coranghees," a term derived from the nearby Coringa port, which served as a major migration point in Andhra. Kakinada is also an educational hub, hosting institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Rangaraya Medical College, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) campus, and Andhra Polytechnic, the first polytechnic college in Andhra Pradesh. The city also boasts nearby attractions such as Hope Island, which acts as a natural barrier protecting it from cyclones and tsunamis, and the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, home to vast mangrove forests. Notably, Kakinada was among the first 20 cities selected under the Smart Cities Mission.

Kakinada district is a district in the Coastal Andhra Region in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. With Kakinada as its administrative headquarters, it was proposed on 26 January 2022 to become one of the resultant twenty six districts in the state after the final notification has been issued on 4 April 2022 by the government of Andhra Pradesh. The district was formed from Kakinada and Peddapuram revenue divisions from East Godavari district. Incidentally, during earlier times, the region comprising towns Pithapuram, Kakinada and Peddapuram were referred as Prolunadu (prōlunāḍu) or Polnaud, which now roughly corresponds to the areas in this district.

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JNTU Kakinada) is a public university in Kakinada of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is one of India's universities focusing on engineering. The university has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) with an "A+" grade. JNTU Kakinada is known for its EAMCET entrance test where over 250,000 students take the test every year for around 600 seats in its undergraduate engineering courses. All the selected top candidates for engineering programs enroll at the University College of Engineering (Autonomous) Kakinada.

Kakinada Port is a large complex comprising Kakinada Anchorage Port, Kakinada Deep Water Port, Kakinada Fishing Harbour and Ship-Breaking Unit. Kakinada Anchorage Port has a century-long tradition. Kakinada Deep Water Port is an all-weather deep water port, and the channel has a depth of 12 metres (39 ft). The port can handle vessels up to 50,000 DWT. The port handled 10.81 million tonnes of cargo in 2010–2011. The AP Govt developed Kakinada beach in 2013 and it has 100 acres of land covered from port to Uppada area. New Kakinada Port railway station was opened in 2011. A new port named, Kakinada Gateway port is underconstruction in Kakinada district, This will be the third port in Kakinada district, with a proposed cargo handling capacity of 16 million tonnes of cargo.
