Cluny

Cluny Abbey (French: [klyni]; French: Abbaye de Cluny, formerly also Cluni or Clugny; Latin: Abbatia Cluniacensis) is a former Benedictine monastery in Cluny, Saône-et-Loire, France. It was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The abbey was constructed in the Romanesque architectural style, with three churches built in succession from the 4th to the early 12th centuries. The earliest basilica was the world's largest church until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Cluny was founded by Duke William I of Aquitaine in 910. He nominated Berno as the first abbot of Cluny, subject only to Pope Sergius III. The abbey was notable for its stricter adherence to the Rule of St. Benedict, whereby Cluny became acknowledged as the leader of western monasticism. In 1790 during the French Revolution, the abbey was sacked and mostly destroyed, with only a small part surviving. Starting around 1334, the Abbots of Cluny maintained a townhouse in Paris known as the Hôtel de Cluny, which has been a public museum since 1843. Apart from the name, and the building itself, it no longer possesses anything originally connected with Cluny.

The Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie de Cluny is a museum in Cluny in Saône-et-Loire. It was previously known as the Ochier Museum (musée Ochier). It is housed in the 15th century abbot's palace built by Jean de Bourbon. A partnership between the town of Cluny and France's Centre des monuments nationaux, it is twinned with Cluny Abbey.

The canton of Cluny is an administrative division of the Saône-et-Loire department, eastern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Cluny. It consists of the following communes:

The tunnel du Bois Clair is a 1.6 km (0.99 mi) former railway tunnel near Cluny, France repurposed as a shared-use tunnel (i.e. bike and footpath). It is part of the voie verte (cycle path / greenway), the Voie Verte de Bourgogne du Sud. It was the longest cycling tunnel in Europe until Fyllingsdalstunellen in Norway (2.9 km) opened in 2023. The tunnel is closed during the winter months (mid-October through the end of March) to protect a colony of bats that live in the tunnel. The tunnel takes about 7 minutes to travel through by bike and around 20 minutes by foot.

Berzé-le-Châtel (French pronunciation: [bɛʁze lə ʃatɛl]; Arpitan: Bresié-le-Châtiô) is a commune in the Saône-et-Loire department in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in eastern France. The trouvère Hugues IV de Berzé was the ruler of Berzé-le-Châtel in the early 13th century. The castle has a 40 meter deep well.
