Teochew Building

The Ngee Ann Kongsi (Chinese: 义安公司; pinyin: Yì Ān Gōngsī) is a charitable foundation located in Singapore and governed by the Ngee Ann Kongsi Ordinance of 1933. It is one of many Overseas Chinese Kongsi, or clan associations, that were set up by immigrants from China in the late 19th century. The foundation's name, Ngee Ann, is the old name for Chaozhou, which may also be transliterated as Teochew. The Teochew people reside in the eastern part of Guangdong province, China, a distinct racial group sharing the province with other communities such as the Cantonese and Hakka people. The Ngee Ann Kongsi was founded in 1845 by Seah Eu Chin to look after the religious and humanitarian needs of Teochew immigrants in Singapore. It was set up within Yueh Hai Ching Temple, a national monument of Singapore. Now a nonprofit organization, Ngee Ann Kongsi contributes to Singaporean society through educational and other charitable projects. The Ngee Ann Kongsi also provides a tertiary bursary and scholarship towards deserving Teochew students. Students that display good academic results, leadership skills and strong co-curricular records are eligible for the scholarship, while students with good academic results and have financial needs can apply to the Kongsi for bursary.

The Ngee Ann Cultural Centre was set up in 1998 in the Teochew Building in Singapore. It is owned by the Ngee Ann Kongsi and aims to promote Singaporean awareness of Chinese culture, in particular Teochew heritage, through the medium of visual and performing arts. The Cultural Centre encourages involvement and engagement among the Singaporean Teochew community and its artists through Chinese calligraphy and brush painting as well as Teochew opera, dance, music, and drama. The Cultural Centre also supports artists and performers by offering exhibition space, facilities, and organisational resources for local and international artistic and cultural activities. The Centre organises three annual exhibitions: The National Teochew Art and Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition, the Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition, and the 3D Art Exhibition. The National Teochew Art and Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition occurs on November 19 every year, showcasing amateur and professional artists of Teochew ancestry. The exhibition spans hundreds of contemporary and traditional artworks in diverse media such as Chinese brush painting, calligraphy, watercolours, oils, acrylic and mixed media artwork. It also includes a section showcasing talent from primary and secondary schools. Each year one outstanding artist is selected from the exhibitors and honoured by having their artwork highlighted on the cover of the accompanying souvenir magazine. In accordance with its interest in spiritual well-being, the Cultural Centre hosts many Dharma and Buddhist spiritual talks and initiations by Tibetan and Chinese religious teachers. Inter-religious organisations have also held talks at the Centre. Apart from a spacious exhibition hall and an auditorium, the Centre also contains two smaller function rooms. The current 39th Chairman of the NACC is Ang Hoon Seng, supported by Vice-chairman Phua Bah Lee.

Hotel Fort Canning is a boutique hotel opened in 2010 in Fort Canning Park, Singapore, self-styled as "fashionable" and located near such touristy nightlife areas as Orchard Road and Clarke Quay. The building was the former British Far East Command Headquarters during World War II. The building was restored and reconstructed as a hotel by architectural firm DP Architects which sought to maintain the old style colonial glamour and the multi-columned façade of the old headquarters.

The Chesed-El Synagogue is a synagogue in Singapore. The synagogue was constructed in 1905 and is located at Oxley Rise in the River Valley Planning Area, within the Central Area of Singapore. As the Jewish community grew beyond the capacity of the Maghain Aboth Synagogue, there was a need for this second place of worship, which was built in the late-Renaissance style. It was also one of the first places to use gaslights in Singapore. On 18 December 1998, it was gazetted as a national monument of Singapore.

Red Cross House is a building on Penang Lane in Singapore which serves as the headquarters of the Singapore Red Cross Society.

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC), formally the Singapore Red Cross Society, is a humanitarian aid and community services charity in Singapore. The SRC is a national member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and forms a part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The SRC provides a range of services and programmes including international aid across the Asia-Pacific region, international humanitarian law advocacy, emergency management, blood donation and community services for the youth, families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The organisation traces its history back to when it was established on 30 September 1949 as part of the British Red Cross Society as the Singapore Branch of the British Red Cross. It was officially incorporated by the Parliament of Singapore on 6 April 1973 and was appointed as the National Blood Donor Recruiter by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) in 2001.

The National Theatre (Malay: Panggong Negara; Chinese: 国家剧场) was built on the slope of Fort Canning Park along River Valley Road in the Museum Planning Area of Singapore. The theatre was officially opened on 8 August 1963 to commemorate Singapore's self-governance and was the first and largest national theatre in Singapore back then. It was once the venue for various international performances, universities' convocations and the National Day rallies until it was demolished in August 1986 due to structural reasons and to make way for the nearby construction part of Central Expressway along Clemenceau Avenue.

The Sri Thendayuthapani Temple, better known as the Chettiars' Temple, is one of Singapore Hindu community's most important monuments. Completed in 1984, it replaces a much earlier temple built by the Chettiars (Indian moneylenders). The temple was gazetted as a National monument of Singapore on 20 October 2014.This Shaivite temple, dedicated to the six-faced Lord Subramaniam (Lord Muruga), is at its most active during the festival of Thaipusam, where the procession ends here. It is here, during the annual Thaipusam festival, that hundreds of pilgrims, their bodies pierced by hooks, spears and spiked steel structures called kavadi, end their walk from the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road. The act of penance is carried out by devotees in gratitude to Lord Subramanian or Murugan, son of Lord Siva, for granting their prayers of supplication.

The Pavilion is a house on Oxley Hill, near Orchard Road in Singapore. The Pavilion served as Government House between 1859 and 1861, after Raffles House was demolished to make way for a fort. The street address of the site is 5 Oxley Rise, Singapore. The Pavilion's prominent site on the top of the hill allows it to overlook Lee Kuan Yew's house at 38 Oxley Road.

The Battle Box is the popular name of the Fort Canning Bunker, formerly known as Headquarters Malaya Command Operations Bunker, constructed under Fort Canning Hill, Singapore, as an emergency, bomb-proof command centre during the Malayan Campaign and the Battle of Singapore. The Battle Box is currently a museum and tourist attraction.

Fort Canning MRT station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the Downtown Line (DTL), located on the boundary of Museum and Singapore River planning areas, Singapore. Situated on the northern bank of the Singapore River, the station is at the foot of Fort Canning, which the station is named after. The station serves various developments including UE Square and Clarke Quay, as well as Fort Canning Park. First announced as River Valley MRT station in August 2010, constructing the connecting tunnels to the station was one of the most complex projects on the DTL. It involved the diversion of the Singapore River, while the tunnels to the adjacent Bencoolen station had to be constructed near existing operational tunnels. Starting operations on 21 October 2017 along with the DTL Stage 3 stations, the station is designed to reflect the locality. An artwork Through His Eyes is featured as part of the Art-in-Transit programme.

Van Kleef Aquarium was an oceanarium located along River Valley Road, at the foot of Fort Canning Hill, in Singapore. Fully air-conditioned, the aquarium had 6,500 animals at the time of opening, which were housed in freshwater, seawater, and swamp tanks respectively. The decision to develop the aquarium was made in 1935 by the Municipal Commission, as a way to use the money bequested to the Municipal Commission by Karel William Benjamin Van Kleef in 1930 for the "embellishment of the city". While the site and name of the aquarium were chosen by 1936, and plans for it drawn up in 1937, the aquarium was only approved in 1939 due to cost concerns. Construction subsequently began in 1940, but work was halted after piling was completed due to rising material costs, only resuming in 1952 on a new site. The aquarium opened in September 1955, after multiple delays and with part of the costs borne by the City Council, and had 150,000 visitors in its first three months of operation. The aquarium remained popular through the 1970s, but by 1991, despite having been renovated between 1986 and 1987 for $750,000, it was viewed as out of date and it closed in May 1991. The aquarium was subsequently reopened as World of Aquarium in October 1991, which closed less than two years later due to poor business, and again as Fort Canning Aquarium in 1993, but it eventually closed for good in 1996 and was demolished two years later.
