Cawthorne

High Hoyland is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England, on the border with West Yorkshire. It lies to the west of Kexbrough, and is located at approximately 53°35′10″N 1°35′30″W, at an elevation of around 200 metres above sea level. At the 2001 census it had a population of 142, reducing to 128 at the 2011 Census.There are many Hoylands in Barnsley - there is the village of Hoyland itself south east of Barnsley on the road to Sheffield, which includes the former hamlets of Hoyland Common, Upper Hoyland and Hoyland Nether (nether being old English for "lower"). Hoylandswaine is located on the opposite side of the wide valley, and at almost 1000 feet above sea level has a wilder and bleaker feel than High Hoyland. The word Hoyland is derived from Norse, and at its simplest means "farm on a hill". Despite there being countless farms on hills around England, the majority of the Hoylands are concentrated in Barnsley.

Cannon Hall Farm is a working farm and tourist attraction close to the village of Cawthorne, near Barnsley in the English county of South Yorkshire. Open to visitors since 1989, it is owned and run by the Nicholson family. The farm was voted Best Tourist Experience at the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards 2011. Cannon Hall Farm was once the home farm for Cannon Hall, built by the Spencer-Stanhope family and now a museum. Roger Nicholson, who developed the current farm and attractions inherited the land when he was 16. The farm itself raises sheep, goats, and pigs, with over 750 lambs reared, and 400 ewes and 800 piglets produced annually. The site's visitor attractions include an adventure playground, large tube maze, farm shop, delicatessen, gift and toy shop, and restaurant.

Cannon Hall is a country house museum located between the villages of Cawthorne and High Hoyland some 5 miles (8 km) west of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Originally the home of the Spencer and later the Spencer-Stanhope family, it now houses collections of fine furniture, paintings, ceramics and glassware. It at one time housed the Regimental Museum of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary's Own) and the Light Dragoons, which has now closed. Now occupying four rooms in the east wing is the "Family of Artists" exhibition on loan from the De Morgan Foundation, which draws on the links between the Spencer Stanhopes and the De Morgans.The building is constructed of coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings with a symmetrical layout of a central 3-storey block of 5 bays and slightly set back 2-storey side wings of 3 bays.

It is situated in the foothills of the Pennines, between the towns of Barnsley and Penistone, and includes the village of Silkstone Common. At the 2001 census it had a population of 2,954, increasing to 3,153 at the 2011 Census.Silkstone Parish is twinned with Saint-Florent-des-Bois in France.

Silkstone glassworks is situated at Pot House Hamlet, a historic former industrial site in Silkstone, South Yorkshire, England. A glass works was established at Silkstone around 1659 by John Pilmey, who had emigrated from France some years earlier. The glassworks had two furnaces, one for green glass and the other for white. Pilmey married Abigail Scott at Silkstone in 1658. Later she was one of the signatories who successfully petitioned Parliament against the Glass Tax in 1696. Her death is recorded on William Scott's gravestone in the North Aisle of Silkstone Church. In 1718, John Warburton, when preparing his map of Yorkshire, noted as he passed Silkstone Church "pass a rill at the bottom the glass house on the right." The remains of the glassworks and pottery were excavated by English Heritage in 2003, and the site was subsequently protected as a scheduled monument.Pot House Hamlet now consists of a number of independent small businesses.

Darton Academy is a coeducational secondary school located in Darton in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. The school provides education for more than 1,200 pupils in Years 7 to 11. The school is located to the north west of Barnsley in the village of Kexbrough on the edge of the open countryside approximately one mile from junction 38 of the M1 motorway.

Noblethorpe is a hamlet in the English county of South Yorkshire. The hamlet falls within the Penistone East Ward of the Barnsley MBC. Noblethorpe lies on the A628 road between Barnsley and Penistone, to its north is the village of Silkstone and to its south is Silkstone Common. An 1822 description describes Noblethorpe as having a single house.

Silkstone Common is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The village has Junior and Infants Schools, a railway station, a single local shop and the Station Inn. One of the most notable events in the history of the village was the Huskar Pit Disaster, which occurred on 4 July 1838 when a freak storm flooded part of the mine, killing 26 children; the youngest was 7 years, the oldest 17. A historical account of this event has been documented in the book entitled Children of the Dark. Notable buildings include Knabb's Hall which was built in late 17th century for William and Elizabeth Wood of Wortley Forge, and the Old Station House, a building located directly beside the railway line which once housed the railway owner but now functions as a residential building.

The present Silkstone Common railway station, which opened by British Rail on 14 May 1983 serves the village of Silkstone Common, near Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. The station is 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Barnsley on the Penistone Line between Huddersfield and Sheffield.
