Clones Market House

Clones Abbey is a ruined monastery that later became an Augustinian abbey in the twelfth century, and its main sights are ecclesiastical. The Abbey was formerly known as St. Tighernach Abbey, and was referred to locally as the "wee abbey". Parochial and monastic settlements were separated, and it seems likely that the building became the Abbey of St. Peter and Paul. In the Book of Armagh and Annals of Ulster the word Clones is referenced as "Clauin Auis" and "Cluain Auiss," respectively. As there is no word in standard dictionaries of Old Irish that give the form "auis" or "eois", Seosamh Ó Dufaigh has speculated that the word is a cognate of the Welsh word for point or a tip: "awch". Although, Bearnard O'Dubhthaigh disputes this theory on the grounds that the earlier form of "awch" is "afwch". Folklore suggests that the monastic town was originally called "Cluin Innish" on account of it being surrounded by water.

Clones ( KLOH-nis; from Irish Cluain Eois, meaning 'meadow of Eois') is a small town in the west of County Monaghan in Ireland. The area is part of the Border Region in the Republic of Ireland, earmarked for economic development by the Irish Government due to its currently below-average economic situation. The town was badly hit economically by the Partition of Ireland in 1921 because of its location on the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. The creation of the Irish border deprived it of access to a large part of its economic hinterland for many years. The town had a population of 1,680 at the 2016 census.

The Battle of Clones occurred on 13 June 1643 during the Irish Confederate Wars, when Irish Confederate forces commanded by Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill (Owen Roe O'Neill) were decisively defeated near Clones in County Monaghan by the Protestant Laggan Army commanded by Sir Robert Stewart.

St Tiernach's Park is the principal GAA stadium of Ulster GAA located in County Monaghan, Ireland. It is used mainly for Gaelic football. Such is its association with the town of Clones ( KLOH-nis), which is located to the south, the venue itself is often referred to simply as Clones. With a current capacity of 29,000, it hosts major Gaelic football matches such as the Ulster Senior Football Championship final and is home to Clones GAA and Monaghan GAA.

Magheraveely (from Irish Machaire Mhílic) is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census, it had a population of people 254. It is within the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area.

Scotshouse (Irish: Teach an Scotaigh) is a small agricultural village in the parish of Currin in County Monaghan, Ireland. It is roughly three miles east of where the counties of Cavan, Fermanagh and Monaghan meet. Scotshouse is about 7 kilometres (4 mi) from Clones, 18 km (11 mi) from Cavan town and 27 km (17 mi) away from Monaghan town. Scotshouse is in the townland of Aghnahola (Irish: Achadh na hAbhla, meaning 'field of the apples'). Finn Bridge, a border crossing on the Finn River, is west of Scotshouse.

Drummully or Drumully (Irish: Droim Ailí; "rocky ridge") is an electoral division (ED) in the west of County Monaghan in Ireland. Known as the Sixteen Townlands to locals and as Coleman's Island or the Clonoony salient to the security forces, it is a pene-enclave almost completely surrounded by County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. Since the Partition of Ireland in the 1920s, the Fermanagh–Monaghan border has formed part of the international border between the United Kingdom and what is now the Republic of Ireland, leaving Drummully as a practical enclave, connected to the rest of the republic only by an unbridged 110-metre (360 ft) length of the Finn River. The area is accessed via the Clones–Butlersbridge road, numbered N54 in the Republic and A3 in Northern Ireland. The civil parish of Drummully includes the Monaghan ED and the surrounding parts of Fermanagh; the townland of Drummully, with the ruins of the medieval parish church, lies in the Fermanagh portion of the parish. The two county Fermanagh EDs separating Drummully from the republic are Clonkeelan to the east and Derrysteaton to the southwest. The Connons is a name given sometimes to Drummully ED, and sometimes to the entire district between Clones and Redhills, County Cavan, encompassing Clonkeelan, Drummully, and Derrysteaton. Connons Catholic church and Connons community hall are in Drummully ED.

Newbliss (Irish: Cúil Darach, meaning 'corner of the oaktrees'), historically known as Lisdaragh (Irish: Lios Darach, meaning 'ringfort abounding in oak trees'), is a village in County Monaghan, Ireland. It is located where the R183 and R189 regional roads intersect.

Finn Bridge, also known as Annaghmullin Bridge, is a bridge built in 1856 that connects County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland to County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. It spans the Finn River (a tributary of the River Erne which is not to be confused with the River Finn in County Donegal). The bridge is close to Laurel Hill, a crossroads in the west of County Monaghan that is near the villages of Scotshouse (in County Monaghan) and Redhills (in County Cavan). Finn Bridge is a border crossing between the Republic and the North. It was used by Gardaí, RUC and also the Irish and British armies during "The Troubles". The bridge was closed to vehicles in the 1970s, when the British Army fixed concrete pillars onto the middle of it. This was intended to prevent the IRA from moving easily between the two areas. The only way across was by walking through the gaps between the pillars. Since the Northern Ireland peace process, the bridge has been reopened to vehicular traffic. The bridge is on one of a small number of road routes used to access Drummully (also known as Coleman's Island or 'the Sixteen Townlands'), a pene-enclave of County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland which is accessible by road only via County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.

Drum (Irish: Droim) is a village in the west of County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. It is notable for being one of the only Protestant-majority settlements in the Republic of Ireland.

Redhills (Irish: An Cnoc Rua, meaning 'the red hill') is a village located in northern County Cavan, Ireland. It is near the N54 road and is home to Redhills GAA club, which has produced four Cavan Inter-County players. The Finn River flows a short distance to the north of Redhills.The 1992 film, The Playboys, was filmed on location in the village, as was the 1995 film The Run of the Country. Both films were scripted by Oscar nominee and Redhills native, Shane Connaughton. Connaughton's books A Border Station (1989) and The Run of the Country (1991) are also set in the village.

Newtownbutler railway station was on the Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway in Northern Ireland. The Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway opened the station on 26 June 1858.It closed on 1 October 1957.
