The Rotunda (Longwood University)

The Rotunda is the name given to a building on the campus of Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. It was formerly known as Ruffner Hall, but the name was changed in 2019. The original Rotunda was built in 1839 and gradually expanded along with the school over several decades, to eventually include its iconic rotunda dome, until its completion in 1907. The building was eventually destroyed in a fire on April 24, 2001. The then-Longwood College began to rebuild the structure, and it was reopened just before the fourth anniversary of the fire, on April 23, 2005. The new Rotunda, in contrast to the old, has a basement to increase instructional space.

Longwood University is a public university in Farmville, Virginia. Founded in 1839, it is the third-oldest public university in Virginia and one of the hundred oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. Previously a college, Longwood became a university on July 1, 2002. Three undergraduate academic colleges—the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, and the College of Education and Human Services—supported by the Cormier Honors College and coupled with the College of Graduate and Professional Studies serve an enrollment of 5,096. In early April 1865 both Gens. Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant marched past the north end of campus on Lee's retreat to Appomattox just days before the end of the American Civil War; at the south end of campus lies the former Robert Russa Moton High School, site of the historic 1951 student strike that became one of the five court cases culminating in the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision; and Israel Hill, a community of free Black people formed around the turn of the 19th century, stands two miles from campus.

Farmville Historic District is a national historic district located at Farmville, Prince Edward County, Virginia. It encompasses 246 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object (the Confederate Monument) in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Farmville. It includes a variety of commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial buildings dating from the mid-19th to early-20th centuries. Notable buildings include the Paulett-Gill house (c. 1858), Farmville Presbyterian Church (1828, 1859), Johns Memorial Episcopal Church (1881), Farmville Methodist Church (1907), Hotel Weyanoke (1925), the warehouses of the Dunnington Tobacco Company and Central Virginia Processing, Inc., the former Craddock-Terry Shoe Company, the former Cunningham and Company tobacco prizery, Norfolk and Western Railroad passenger station (c. 1905), Doyne Building (c. 1890), the Watkins M. Abbitt Federal Building (1917), Prince Edward County Courthouse, and the former Farmville High School (1913). Located in the district is the separately listed First Baptist Church.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Farmville is a town in Prince Edward and Cumberland counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The population was 7,473 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Prince Edward County.Farmville developed near the headwaters of the Appomattox River in central Virginia; the waterway was long its main transportation access to other markets. In the 19th century, a railroad was constructed here. Since the late 20th century, the former railway has been converted to the High Bridge Trail State Park, a more than 30-mile-long (48 km) rail trail park. US 15, VA 45 and US 460 now intersect at Farmville. The town is the home of Longwood University and is the town nearest to Hampden–Sydney College.

Farmville station was an intercity rail station located in Farmville, Virginia. It was served by Norfolk and Western Railway passenger trains until around 1971. It was later served by Amtrak's Mountaineer from 1975 to 1977, then the Hilltopper until 1979. The station building remains extant.

Willett Hall (originally Lancer Hall) is an academic facility and previously served as a 1,807-seat multi-purpose arena in Farmville, Virginia. It was built in 1980 and was home to the Longwood University Lancers men's and women's basketball teams until 2023. On December 3, 2016, the basketball court was named after former Longwood basketball player Jerome Kersey, officially making the hardwood Jerome Kersey Court.On October 4, 2016, Longwood was the host for the 2016 United States vice presidential debate. Willett Hall was the venue for the debate. Prior to the debate, the building underwent a modest renovation to the front entrance and lobby in preparation.On April 10, 2019, Longwood announced a $15 million donation to begin construction of a new convocation and events center to replace Willett Hall as the venue for Lancer basketball. The arena will be named the Joan Perry Brock Center after its benefactor, cost $35-40 million, would seat 3,000, and is scheduled to open in 2023. Willett Hall will remain in use as an academic facility, and provide support to the basketball teams as a practice and training venue.

The Farmville murders occurred in Farmville, Virginia, in September 2009 – the quadruple bludgeoning homicide of Mark Niederbrock, Debra S. Kelley, their daughter Emma Niederbrock and friend Melanie Wells. Emma Niederbrock shared an online friendship with Richard Samuel McCroskey, a troubled aspiring rapper. Together, Emma, McCroskey, Emma's parents and Wells attended a horrorcore concert the week before. When Wells' mother could not locate her daughter, she alerted police, who discovered the murders. McCroskey, 20 years old, was subsequently arrested, convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison. As of 2020, he is serving his sentence at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

Charles "Buddy" Bolding Stadium is a baseball venue in Farmville, Virginia, United States. It is home to the Longwood Lancers baseball team, a member of the Big South Conference. Opened in 1994, the venue has a capacity of 500. It is named for Buddy Bolding, who was the first head coach of the Lancers' baseball team, who served for 35 seasons from 1978 until his retirement after the 2013 season.Features of the stadium include a recessed dugouts, a press box, batting cages, and irrigation.

First Baptist Church is a historic African-American Baptist church located at Farmville, Prince Edward County, Virginia. It was built between about 1855 an 1895, and is a one-story, rectangular brick Late Gothic Revival style church building on a full basement. The building features a square tower centered on the primary façade, pointed arch windows with stained- and milk-glass panes, a primary entry with double leaf doors topped by a pointed arch transom and, on the interior, original wood pews and beaded board wainscoting. The church was the site of a number of meetings related to the desegregation of Prince Edward County schools during the 1950s and 1960s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. It is located in the Farmville Historic District.

Buffalo Creek is a 21.1-mile-long (34.0 km) tributary of the Appomattox River in the U.S. state of Virginia. Flowing entirely through Prince Edward County, it joins the Appomattox River at Farmville.

The Robert Russa Moton Museum (popularly known as the Moton Museum or Moton) is a historic site and museum in Farmville, Prince Edward County, Virginia. It is located in the former Robert Russa Moton High School, considered "the student birthplace of America's Civil Rights Movement" for its initial student strike and ultimate role in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case desegregating public schools. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998, and is now a museum dedicated to that history. In 2022 it was designated an affiliated area of Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park. The museum (and school) were named for African-American educator Robert Russa Moton. The former Moton School is a single-story brick Colonial Revival building, built in 1939 in response to activism and legal challenges from the local African-American community and legal challenges from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). It houses six classrooms and an office arranged around a central auditorium. It had no cafeteria or restrooms for teachers. Built to handle 180 students, already by the 1940s it struggled to hold 450; the County, whose all-white board refused to appropriate funds for properly expanding the school facilities, built long temporary buildings to house the overflow. Covered with roofing material, they were called the "tar-paper shacks."

Fuqua School is a private primary and secondary school located in Farmville, Virginia. Founded in 1959 as Prince Edward Academy, a whites-only segregation academy, the school was renamed after businessman J. B. Fuqua made a large contribution to the school in 1993.
