Wilmington (Lenape: Paxahakink / Pakehakink) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Delaware. The city was built on the site of Fort Christina, the first Swedish settlement in North America. It lies at the confluence of the Christina River and Brandywine River, near where the Christina flows into the Delaware River. It is the county seat of New Castle County and one of the major cities in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area. Wilmington was named by Proprietor Thomas Penn after his friend Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was prime minister during the reign of George II of Great Britain. As of the 2020 United States Census, the city's population was 70,898. The Wilmington Metropolitan Division, comprising New Castle County, Delaware, Cecil County, Maryland and Salem County, New Jersey, had an estimated 2016 population of 719,887. The Delaware Valley metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Camden, New Jersey, had a 2016 population of 6,070,500, and a combined statistical area of 7,179,357.

Rodney Square is the public square and historic district in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, United States, named after American Revolutionary leader Caesar Rodney. A large equestrian statue of Rodney by James E. Kelly formerly stood in the front of the square until it was removed in 2020. The square was created in the early 20th century by John Jacob Raskob, who worked for Pierre S. du Pont. The City Beautiful movement served as the inspiration for the effort.In 1917, to make room for the Wilmington Public Library in the square, the 18th-century First Presbyterian Church was moved to Park Drive and the remains in the cemetery were reinterred in Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, as the Rodney Square Historic District.

The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is a free jazz music festival held annually in June at Rodney Square in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. The first festival was held in 1989 on the open lawn in the center of the city, and has grown into the largest free jazz festival on the East Coast. The event is held to keep alive the memory of Clifford Brown who died in a traffic accident in 1956 along with pianist Richie Powell. Pieces written by Brown and tribute pieces (like Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford") are often played. Some acts have been staged at the Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, where a fee was charged.

The Daniel L. Herrmann Courthouse is a building in downtown Wilmington, Delaware. Built in 1916, the former courthouse is currently occupied by Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, a Wilmington-based law firm.

A statue of Caesar Rodney is installed in Wilmington, Delaware, United States. The statue was erected in Rodney Square in downtown Wilmington on July 4, 1923. It was designed by New York sculptor James Edward Kelly. The Gorham Company in Rhode Island cast the statue and its two bronze plaques. The memorial was removed in June 2020. Its current location, preservation status, and plans for future display are currently unclear, and its removal has generated controversy.

The U.S. Post Office, Courthouse, and Customhouse, also known as Main Post Office, is a historic post office, courthouse, and custom house, located on Rodney Square in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It was designed by Irwin & Leighton in 1933–1935, and building was completed in 1937. It is in the Classical Revival. It is a three-story, cut stone structure with six large stone pillars across the main entrance. the gross building area is 104,669 sq. ft. It now serves as Wilmington Trust headquarters. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The DuPont Building, occupying the entire block bound by 10th, 11th, Orange and Market streets, was one of the first high-rises in Wilmington, Delaware, United States. It looks out over Rodney Square. The building was built in phases, with the original building constructed in 1908 fronting Rodney Square. At the time, the building housed the offices of DuPont. In 1913, the building was expanded into a "U" by adding wings along 10th and 11th streets, the DuPont Playhouse was added, and a portion of the original 1908 section was converted into the Hotel duPont. The final addition to the building occurred in 1923 when the Orange Street addition was added along with an additional two floors, bringing the floor count to 13 and the height to 124 feet (38 m). Until early 2015 the building housed DuPont's headquarters. In December 2014, DuPont announced that it would move and consolidate its corporate headquarters at its nearby Chestnut Run Plaza site and that The Chemours Company, which spun off from DuPont in 2015, would move into the DuPont Building. As well as Chemours, the building houses The Playhouse on Rodney Square (formerly the DuPont Playhouse), the Hotel duPont, and a branch of M&T Bank.Under pressure from activist shareholders, the company first leased the building's DuPont Playhouse in January 2015 to the Grand Opera House, which renamed it The Playhouse on Rodney Square. The entire structure and the hotel business were then sold to Wilmington-based developer Buccini/Pollin in January 2018. The new owners have leased the building's office space back to Chemours, will continue to lease The Playhouse to The Grand Opera House, and have promised to keep the hotel operating.The Hotel duPont was where Joe Biden announced his candidacy for the Delaware's 1972 United States Senate election.

Wilmington Club, also known as the John Merrick House, is a historic clubhouse located at Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, United States. It was designed by architect Edmund George Lind and built in 1864, as a three-story, five bay "T"-plan brownstone dwelling in the Italianate style. The Wilmington Club purchased the building in 1900, and expanded it between 1936 and 1950 and in 1966. The Club incorporated in 1877.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church is a historic Catholic church located at 1012 French Street in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Delaware Trust Building, now known as The Residences at Rodney Square, is a historic office building and bank headquarters located at Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It was built in 1921, as a 13-story, 15-bay-by-15 bay, U-shaped steel-frame building in the Classical Revival style. The building has a watertable of gray granite, a limestone-clad two-story plus mezzanine base, and a shaft of buff-colored brick. Atop the building is a limestone cornice. The Market Street elevation features three monumental-scaled arched entrance openings reminiscent of ancient Roman buildings. It once had a 22-story modern office building at its center that has since been removed. The building has been converted to residential use. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The I. M. Pei Building, also known as the Wilmington Tower, is a high-rise office building in Wilmington, Delaware. It is the third tallest building in Delaware, and the only building in the state designed by noted architect I. M. Pei. The building was completed in 1971 and is 282 feet (86 m) tall, with 23 floors.

The Wilmington Savings Fund Society Building is a historic bank building at 838 North Market Street in Wilmington, Delaware, United States. The three-story masonry structure was built in 1920, replacing an earlier building constructed by the Wilmington Savings Fund Society in 1886, and was designed by the New York City Hoggson Brothers firm. It is a stately expression of the Classical Revival, with massive Egyptian columns supporting porticos on three sides. Prior to WSFS Bank moving to its current headquarters on Delaware Avenue, the building's main entry on North Market Street featured an ornate dentillated pediment. The lobby featured a mural by N. C. Wyeth, added in 1932. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.In 2015, construction began to turn the building into apartments aimed at housing teachers from the area's many public and charter schools.
