Cape Sounion (Modern Greek: Aκρωτήριο Σούνιο Akrotírio Soúnio [akroˈtirʝo ˈsuɲo]; Ancient Greek: Ἄκρον Σούνιον Άkron Soúnion, latinized Sunium; Venetian: Capo Colonne "Cape of Columns") is the promontory at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of the town of Lavrio (ancient Thoricus), and 69.5 km (43.1 miles) southeast of Athens in the Athens Riviera. It is part of Lavreotiki municipality, East Attica, Greece. Cape Sounion is noted for its Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. Its remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the Aegean sea.

The Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek temple on Cape Sounion, Greece, dedicated to the god Poseidon. There is evidence of the establishment of sanctuaries on the cape from as early as the 11th century BC. Sounion's most prominent temples, the Temple of Athena and the Temple of Poseidon, are however not believed to have been built until about 700 BC, and their kouroi (freestanding Greek statues of young men) date from about one hundred years later. The material and size of the offerings at the Temple of Poseidon indicate that it was likely frequented by members of the elite and the aristocratic class. The Greeks considered Poseidon to be the "master of the sea". Given the importance to Athens of trade by sea and the significance of its navy in its creation and survival during the fifth century, Poseidon was of a particular relevance and value to the Athenians.

Lavrio, Lavrion or Laurium (Greek: Λαύριο; Ancient Greek: Λαύρειον (later Λαύριον); from Middle Ages until 1908: Εργαστήρια Ergastiria) is a town in southeastern part of Attica, Greece. It is part of Athens metropolitan area and the seat of the municipality of Lavreotiki. Laurium was famous in Classical antiquity for its silver mines, which was one of the chief sources of revenue of the Athenian state. The metallic silver was mainly used for coinage. The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion shows much of the story of these mines. It is located about 60 km SE of Athens city center, SE of Keratea and N of Cape Sounio. Laurium is situated on a bay overlooking the island of Makronisos (ancient times: Helena) in the east. The port is in the middle and gridded streets cover the residential area of Lavrio. GR-89 runs through Lavrio and ends south in Sounio.

Panormus or Panormos (Ancient Greek: Πάνορμος) was a harbour on the east coast of ancient Attica. Panormus was captured by Alexander of Pherae during the latter's expedition in Attica. The Athenian admiral Leosthenes defeated Alexander, but Alexander escaped from being blockaded in Panormus, took several Attic triremes, and plundered Piraeus. Its site is located near the modern Panormo.

Lavrio Indoor Hall, or Kleisto Gymnastirio Lavriou (Greek: Κλειστό Γυμναστήριο Λαυρίου), is an indoor sporting arena that is located in the city of Lavrio, Attica, Greece. The seating capacity of the arena for basketball games is 1,700 people. The arena is owned by the municipality of Lavreotiki.

Lavreotiki is a municipality at the southeasternnmost tip of the Attica peninsula in the Greek regional unit of East Attica. Its municipal seat is the town of Laurium (Lavrio). It is historically important as a significant ancient mining district, most notably in the villages of Laurium and Thorikos on the southeastern seaboard during the 6th, 5th, and 4th centuries BCE. As such it financed the wealth of Athens and the emergence of the Athenian Empire through the slave-powered mining efforts for silver and lead, beginning with the discovery of 2 deep-vein mining efforts during the 480's. Prior to that development, which at Themistocles urging in 483 BC led to the expansion of the Athenian fleet to 200 ships, only surface-mining was deployed as a technique for harvesting silver. More than 250 ore washeries have been identified by archaeologists and geologists in the district.

Legrena (Greek: Λεγρενά) is a coastal village in East Attica in southern Greece on the coast of the Attica peninsula. It is part of the municipality Lavreotiki. It lies along Greek National Road 91, to the west of Sounion. It contains an extensive beach and bay of the same name. The European Public Law Center is located in the vicinity.

Amphitrope (Greek: Ἀμφιτρόπη) was a minor coastal (paralia) deme of ancient Attica, belonging to the Antiochis tribe (phyle), with two representatives in the Boule. It was situated in the valley of Legrena, between mount Baphi to the west and mount Spitharopussi to the east, close to the modern settlement of Synterina (Συντερίνα, 37.73°N 23.99°E / 37.73; 23.99), neighboring the demes of Atene to the west, Sounion to the east and Thorikos to the north-east, on the border between the modern Saronikos and Lavreotiki municipalities. It was one of the smaller demes of the Mines of Laurion district, with eight or nine mines. According to Aeschines (Against Timarchus 101), the father of Timarchus had possessions in Amphitrope which he was forced to sell to pay to cover the expenses of the liturgy. The site of Amphitrope is tentatively located at Pousipelia Megalo Peuka.

Agios Konstantinos (Greek: Άγιος Κωνσταντίνος meaning Saint Constantine, before 1954: Καμάριζα - Kamariza) is a village and a former community in East Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it has been part of the municipality Lavreotiki, which is a municipal unit. It was named after Saint Constantine.

SS Oria was a Norwegian steamer that sank on 12 February 1944, causing the death of some 4,095 Italian prisoners of war, 21 Greeks and 15 Germans. It was one of the worst maritime disasters in history, and the worst maritime disaster caused by the sinking of a single ship in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Theatre of Thorikos (Greek: Αρχαίο Θέατρο Θορικού), situated north of Lavrio, was an ancient Greek theater in the demos of Thorikos in Attica, Greece. It holds the distinction of being the world's oldest known theater, dating back to its construction around 525–480 BC. The theater is unusual in its design, as it is elongated instead of the typical semicircle.

Thorikos or Thoricus (Ancient Greek: Θορικός) was a city, and later a deme in the southern portion of ancient Attica, one of the twelve original settlements that were united in the synoikismos attributed to Theseus to form Archaic Athens. It was later a deme of the phyle of Acamantis. Near it are the mines of Laurion, where lead and silver was mined from Neolithic times, and worked in the industrial quarter of the settlement. There is a theatre dating from c. 525–480 BC. The modern site is Lavrio.
