Peter C. Doerhoefer House

The Basil Doerhoefer House is a Colonial Revival house located at 4432 West Broadway in Louisville, Kentucky whose facade features four monumental columns. It was built in 1902, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.Basil Doerhofer built a house next door for his son, Peter C. Doerhoefer, in 1918. That also was NRHP-listed, in 1983, as the Peter C. Doerhoefer House. Prior to moving to the Basil Doerhoefer House on Broadway the Doerhoefers lived in the Doerhoefer-Hampton House at 2422 West Chestnut Street in Louisville.In 1981 the house was owned by "Christ Temple Apostolic Church, Inc." and signage at the house in 2022 suggests it still is. It is presumably associated with the Christ Temple Christian Life Center, whose main building (perhaps the original Loretto High School) is around the corner at 723 S. 45th St.

Flaget High School was a Catholic College preparatory high school in Louisville, Kentucky's West End from 1942 until 1974. It was located throughout its existence at 44th and River Park Drive, in the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville.

Shawnee Park is a municipal park in Louisville, Kentucky. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed 18 of the city's 123 public parks. Along with the rest of the city's Olmsted-designed park system, Shawnee Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Chickasaw is a neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Its boundaries are West Broadway, 34th Street, Hale Avenue and Chickasaw Park. Chickasaw Park is predominantly black and middle-class. Before integration, Shawnee Park was reserved for whites, while Chickasaw Park was reserved for blacks. Integration has led to a decrease in use for Chickasaw as more persons prefer the larger Shawnee to the north. In 1969, Elmer Lucille Allen, a scientist and artist from the Chickasaw Little League created the Chickasaw Little League. The little league was in operation for 3–4 years and was made to accommodate the children who lived in the Chickasaw neighborhood who could not participate in the little league held in Shawnee Park.Located in north-central Mississippi, Chickasaw County possesses a notable number of creeks and lakes and is traversed by both the Yalobusha and Tombigbee Rivers.

Chickasaw Park is a municipal park in Louisville, Kentucky's west end. It is fronted to the west by the Ohio River and by Southwestern Parkway to the east. It was formerly the country estate of political boss John Henry Whallen, and began development as a park in 1923, but was not completed until the 1930s. The original plan for Chickasaw Park was designed by the Frederick Law Olmsted firm and is part of the Olmsted Park System, but was a later addition, as Shawnee, Iroquois, and Cherokee Parks were designed in the 1880s by Frederick Law Olmsted himself.The City Parks Commission passed a resolution in 1924 making Chickasaw Park and a few other small parks black-only and making the larger parks in the city white-only. In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the NAACP aided three Louisville residents in suing the city over the inequalities between the white- and black-only parks in Louisville. The park was desegregated by Mayor Andrew Broaddus in 1955.The park features the city's only free clay tennis courts. Other features include a basketball court, a pond, a sprayground, two playgrounds, a lodge, and two picnic pavilions. In 1969, Elmer Lucille Allen, a scientist and artist from the Chickasaw neighborhood organized the Chickasaw Little League. Because the Shawnee Little League was closed to children living south of Broadway, Allen organized an integrated Little League for her sons and area children. It was in operation for 3–4 years.

Parkland is a neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Its boundaries are 34th Street on the west, West Broadway on the north, Woodland Avenue on the south, and 26th Street on the east. It was originally called Homestead and was incorporated in 1874. In 1884 the name was changed to Parkland. The neighborhood was initially a wealthy suburb of Louisville. A tornado on March 27, 1890 devastated Parkland, and Parkland was annexed by Louisville in 1894. A community of freed black migrants formed shortly after the Emancipation in the lower-lying area of the neighborhood, originally called Needmore, coming to be known as Little Africa. Leaders such as black poet Joseph S. Cotter Sr. supported efforts to improve the area, yet it continued to stand in contrast to the wealthier and more developed partition of Parkland's white inhabitants. Material deterioration led to Little Africa's 1948 demolition to make way for several urban renewal projects, including one named after Cotter. Many were unable to return, however, with one resident receiving less than $5,000 for her home.On May 27, 1968, Parkland was the site of race riots. Two adolescents were slain, and Parkland was held by the National Guard for seven days. Most businesses and many residents left Parkland after the riots. The neighborhood has since been the subject of several urban renewal efforts. As of 2000, the population of Parkland was 4,550.In 2015, the former Boxing Commissioner of Pennsylvania, George Bochetto, along with a real estate investor, Jared Weiss, bought Muhammad Ali's childhood home located at 3302 Grand Avenue in the Parkland section of Louisville. The home has been restored to its original 1950s condition when Ali lived there. Ali returned to this home in Parkland after his win of Olympic gold in the 1960 Rome Olympics. In 2016, the home opened as a museum called the Muhammad Ali Childhood Home Museum. Both Bochetto and Weiss hope that the renovation will help promote further pride and growth in the Parkland section of Louisville.

Fontaine Ferry Park was an amusement park in Louisville, Kentucky that operated from 1905 to 1969. Located on 64 acres in western Louisville at the Ohio River, it offered over 50 rides and attractions, as well as a swimming pool, skating rink and theatre. The most popular attraction were its wooden roller coasters, of which 4 were built over the years.It was built on land originally part of Aaron Fontaine's estate and ferry landing, which he bought in 1814, and sold in 1887 to Thomas Landenwich, who built a hotel and other attractions there. The park opened to the public in May 1905. It was located at the western terminus of Market Street (originally Fontaine Ferry Road) at what is now Southwestern Parkway in Louisville's Shawnee neighborhood.Until the 1940s, visitors could travel to the park by steamboat from Downtown Louisville. For nearly 60 years the park was off-limits to the city's African Americans. When the West End became integrated in the 1960s, the park remained as a constant reminder of Jim Crow to African Americans. The park became racially integrated in 1964, and was vandalized heavily during racial unrest on May 4, 1969. The nearby Shawnee neighborhood had also been integrated, and white flight was occurring heavily there, especially after the 1968 riots in the West End. The park was sold in 1969, and renamed Ghost Town on the River in 1972, then River Glen Park in 1975, its last season. Following several fires, the city purchased it in 1981. The 1910 carousel was relocated to Marriott's Great America near Chicago the next year and reopened as the Ameri-Go-Round. Fontaine Ferry has been cited bitterly as a reminder of racial segregation in Louisville. It was located between two public parks and, prior to racial integration, one was designated for Whites (Shawnee Park) and the other for Blacks (Chickasaw Park).It is now the site of a residential development called Fontaine Estates, where houses were first sold in 1996. The $1.2 million Shawnee Park Sports Complex was built on the former Fontaine Ferry site in 1997.

Shawnee is a neighborhood in western Louisville, Kentucky. Its boundaries are the Ohio River on the West, Bank Street and the Portland neighborhood on the North, I-264 on the East, and West Broadway on the South. Maps sometimes identify the area as Shawneeland.

The Academy @ Shawnee (formerly, Shawnee High School Magnet Career Academy [MCA]), is a magnet middle school and high school (grades 6–12) in the Jefferson County Public School District in Louisville, Kentucky. It is one of five West Louisville schools selected as part of the Signature Partnership initiative with the University of Louisville. The Academy@ Shawnee also houses the Challenger Learning Center.The Academy @Shawnee began as a high school and incorporated a middle school in the fall of 2013. The school building sits on a large campus and is Gothic-inspired in its architectural design; it was constructed in 1927 and is on the National Register of Historic Places (reference number 84000277). The school had a listed enrollment of 593 students for the 2014/15 school year.

The Virginia Avenue Colored School is a historic school building at 3628 Virginia Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky. Built in 1923 to address overcrowding of a 1915 building, the school was the city's first purpose-built segregated school for African-Americans. It was built by Samuel M. Plato, a prolific local African-American building contractor, and is Renaissance Revival in style. It was enlarged in 1954 and again in 1969 in an attempt to stave off forced integration. It was renamed Jessie R. Carter Elementary School in 1970, and was finally integrated in 1975.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It presently houses the West End School, a private boarding school for boys up to 8th grade.

The West End School is an academically rigorous, free boarding school in Louisville, Kentucky for boys, grades Pre-K through 8. The school was founded in 2005 by Robert Blair and his wife Debbie. In the first year of opening the school Mr. and Mrs. Blair shared a house on Chestnut Street with three middle school boys and commuted to a single classroom at an dilapidated. When they first opened the school they said wanted to start it as educational experiment with the belief that all children can achieve their highest potential if provided with an education imbued with high expectations, rigorous academics, and a supportive community. Over the past 16 years they have grown to 140 students. The focus of the school is to help "at risk" boys from the West End neighborhoods of Louisville, Kentucky. It admits incoming sixth-graders who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program and who are capable of doing grade-level work. The West End School Thrives To Offer substantial counseling that support concerns with emotional, behavioral, academic hardships. Provides a small classroom setting to maximize the learning capability for the students. The school has school enrichment program for kids that are in pre-k and up. Students also have an option to participate in a 4-week summer program which includes academic courses, enrichment activities and travel opportunities which help to prevent "summer learning loss" between changing grades.The School is 100% accredited by the Independent School Association of the Central States. The school is run like a traditional boarding school. The boys must get up each day at 6:45 and lights out is at 9:30. Dan Hall is the chairman of the school's board of directors. Also West End School offers housing to alumni attending high school, who benefit from living in our supportive and structured campus.The last school year there were 5 alumni students. The school is located in the former Virginia Avenue Colored School, Louisville's first purpose-built segregated elementary school, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The R. Gallagher Generating Station was a four-unit coal-burning power plant located along the Ohio River some two miles (3 km) downstream from New Albany, Indiana in southernmost Floyd County, Indiana. The total aggregate capacity (year-around) of the plant's four identical units was 560MW. Unit 2 began operating in 1958; unit 1 in 1959; unit 3 in 1960 and unit 4 in 1961. In early 2012, both Units 1 and 3 were retired. Units 2 and 4 continued to operate because Duke Energy installed baghouses, greatly reducing the pollution and meeting the current standards set by the EPA. The plant's 2012 output was 280 megawatts (each unit is rated at 140 megawatts). The plant is connected to the grid by 138 and 230 kilovolt transmission lines.
