The Chesapeake Detention Facility (CDF), previously the Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center (MCAC), is a maximum level II (supermax or control unit) prison operated by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services in Baltimore.Since April 4, 2012, the state manages the facility under contract with the United States Marshals Service and does not hold state prisoners at CDF. It was built in 1988, and is located at 401 East Madison Street in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Prior to February, 2011, inmates housed at MCAC were confined to their cells 23 hours a day Monday through Friday and 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday. The State of Maryland now has a contract with the federal government to solely house federal pre-trial detainees. These federal detainees are not subjected to the supermax conditions that the prior state inmates were subjected to. Federal detainees recreate together both inside and outside every day of the week, eat together, and have access to phones. Until June 2010, CDF also housed Maryland's death row inmates. Male death row inmates were housed at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County, Maryland from 2010 until death row was closed in 2014. Executions took place across the street from the MCAC at the former Maryland Penitentiary (now known as the Metropolitan Transition Center).As with most prisons in Maryland, CDF is headed by a Warden, Assistant Warden, and a Chief of Security. Rules and regulations of the Division of Correction and CDF are enforced by uniformed correctional officers. Uniformed correctional officers consist of, in descending order of rank; Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, Correctional Officer II's, and Correctional Officer I's.

The Maryland Metropolitan Transition Center (MTC), formerly known as the historic "Maryland Penitentiary", is a maximum pre-trial security Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services prison located in Baltimore facing Greenmount Avenue between Forrest Street and East Madison Street. It was established in 1811 as the first prison in the state and the second of its kind in the country and the original buildings faced towards East Madison Street above the east bank of the Jones Falls stream and adjacent to the old stone walls of the Baltimore City Jail (now renamed the Baltimore City Detention Center), earlier established in 1801, rebuilt in 1857–1859, and later in 1959–1965.Now known as the MTC, the prison still houses Maryland's now decommissioned death chamber. The Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center, across the road, housed male "death row" inmates until June 2010, when they were moved to the North Branch Correctional Institution near Cumberland, Maryland in the western portion of the state in Allegany County, Maryland.

Null House is a historic home located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay wide dwelling of wood-frame construction that was built between 1782 and 1784. It is a rare specimen of the early wooden clapboard building. The façade features a one-story wooden Italianate storefront of later construction with large store windows and two entrances. Originally located at 1010 Hillen Street, to save the building from demolition, it was moved on September 28, 1980, to the present site, 300 feet northeast of its original location on the opposite side of Hillen Street.Null House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 27, 1983.

Old Town is an area of East Baltimore, Maryland, mostly in zip code 21202, bounded roughly by the Jones Falls Expressway (JFX) on the west, Orleans Street to the south, Caroline Street to the east and Monument Street to the north. One of the area's main features is the Old Town Mall.The Baltimore riot of 1968 occurred here. The area was completely rebuilt in the mid-1970s, but has deteriorated since.

Old Town Savings Bank, also known as Cala Brothers, is a historic loft building located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a three-story loft structure designed by architect Frank E. Davis (1839-1921) and constructed in 1871. Both the street façades are cast iron, four bays wide on Gay Street and eight bays wide on Exeter Street. It is a Full Cast Iron Front building. It operated as a bank until about 1940, then housed a wholesale distributor of tobacco and confectionery.Old Town Savings Bank was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Baltimore riot of 1968 was a period of civil unrest that lasted from April 6 to April 14, 1968, in Baltimore. The uprising included crowds filling the streets, burning and looting local businesses, and confronting the police and national guard. The immediate cause of the riot was the April 4 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee, which triggered unrest in over 100 cities across the United States. These events are sometimes described as the Holy Week Uprising.Spiro Agnew, the Governor of Maryland, called out thousands of National Guard troops and 500 Maryland State Police to quell the disturbance. When it was determined that the state forces could not control the rebellion, Agnew requested Federal troops from President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Engine House No. 6 is a historic fire station located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. This two-story brick building features a 103-foot Italian-Gothic tower at the apex of its truncated triangular shape. It was built in 1853–54, and the tower is said to be a copy of Giotto's campanile in Florence, Italy.Engine House No. 6 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Building at 239 North Gay Street, also known as Spartana Electronics, is a historic building located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a tall three-story iron-front structure of Italianate style built in 1875. It represents a Full Cast Iron Front and Major Exterior Cast Iron Detail type building. It was altered at street level by the construction of a modern store façade. Large window openings are flanked by Corinthian columns and headed by segmental arches. In 1974, the property was purchased by Anthony R. Spartana, who founded an electronic supplies business in 1925.Building at 239 North Gay Street was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Center Stage is the state theater of Maryland, and Baltimore's largest professional producing theater. Center Stage began in a converted gymnasium in 1963 as a full arena theatre that seated 240 people. Today, Center Stage houses two performing spaces, the 541-seat Pearlstone and the smaller Head Theater, both in its home in the Mount Vernon Cultural District of Baltimore.

Eager Street Academy (previously Baltimore City Detention Center, School No. 370) is a public, alternative middle-high school serving youth who are incarcerated, located in the Penn-Fallsway neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The school was launched in 1998 as a collaboration between Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPSS), Maryland State Department of Education and the state's Division of Pretrial Detention and Services, and is a part of the larger city school system. Initially without an official name beyond its numeric designation, the school was given the name "Eager Street Academy" in 2002.Based inside the Baltimore City Detention Center, an adult detention facility, Eager Street serves students under 18 who have been charged as adults. BCPSS officials have claimed the school is the only public school in the United States located inside of a jail. Classes at the school were initially held in six portable trailers on the grounds of the BCDC, but its classrooms are now located within a purpose-built juvenile detention facility built in 2017.

Gay Street Historic District is a national historic district in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a notable example of a late-19th and early-20th century commercial corridor in a developing urban area. It includes a high concentration of small-scale commercial buildings or light manufacturing enterprise structures. It contains buildings displaying Victorian Eclectic, Beaux Arts, Italianate, and Romanesque elements, including two full-front, cast-iron buildings.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Baltimore City Detention Center (BCDC, formerly known as the Baltimore City Jail) is a Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services state prison for men and women. It is located on 401 East Eager Street in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. It has been a state facility since July 1991.In July 2015, Maryland governor Larry Hogan announced the men's facility would be permanently closed, and the 750 inmates redistributed among other more modern facilities. The exact date of the closure was not made known. It was demolished in 2021.
