The 2009 USS Port Royal grounding was a ship grounding by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser Port Royal off Oahu, Hawaii on 5 February 2009. The ship ran aground on a coral reef, damaging both the ship and the reef. The incident received wide press coverage in Hawaii, in part because of the damage caused to a sensitive coral environment, and also because the stranded ship was within sight of Honolulu off the airport. Navy investigation found that the grounding was caused by a combination of a misread navigation system, a sleep-deprived commanding officer, broken equipment, and an inexperienced and dysfunctional bridge team. Commanding officer Captain John Carroll was relieved of duty and disciplined. Three other officers and one enlisted sailor were also disciplined. The Navy reattached 5,400 coral colonies in an attempt to repair damage to the reef.

Sand Island, formerly known as Quarantine Island, is a small island within the city of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. The island lies at the entrance to Honolulu Harbor.

Hawaii's 1st congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The district is entirely on the island of Oahu, encompassing the urban areas of the City and County of Honolulu, a consolidated city-county that includes Oahu's central plains and southern shores, including the towns of Aiea, Mililani, Pearl City, Waipahu, and Waimalu. The district is smaller and more densely populated than the 2nd congressional district (which comprises the rest of the state). It is represented by Democrat Ed Case.

Canadian Pacific Air Lines Flight 301 was a scheduled passenger flight from Honolulu, Hawaii to Nadi, Fiji. On 22 July 1962, it was being operated by a Bristol Britannia 314 four-engine turboprop airliner of Canadian Pacific Air Lines, registered CF-CZB. On departure from Honolulu International Airport, the aircraft had engine problems; while attempting a subsequent return and landing on three engines, the crew initiated a go-around that resulted in the plane crashing on the airfield, killing 27 of the 40 on board.

Honolulu Fish Auction has been operating since 1952, selling between 70,000 and 90,000 pounds of fish per day, operating six days per week. It is the sole large-scale auction for tuna west of Tokyo, Japan, and its operations are based on the same system used at the former Tsukiji Market Auction in Tokyo. The largest fish auction to the east is in Maine, United States, and is the only tuna auction in the U.S. In addition to tuna the auction sells a variety of fish of different species, including Mahi-mahi, striped marlin, pink snapper (‘ōpakapaka), red snapper, wahoo (ono), swordfish, and others. It is located in the Commercial Fishing Village at Pier 38 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Like the former Tsukiji Fish Market in Japan, the auction is structured by displaying all the fish caught that day on pallets covered with ice. These are transferred to the auction floor, the tails are cut and inspectors take core samples of the interior of the fish to determine quality insuring that every fish can be inspected by buyers before making their bids. The fishing boats begin lining up at 1:00 am to unload their catch; the auction then begins at 5:30 am on the acre-sized auction floor which is "three-quarters the size of a football field". Nearly 20% of the certified-sustainable fish is exported to the U.S. Mainland.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (IATA: HNL, ICAO: PHNL, FAA LID: HNL), also known as Honolulu International Airport, is the main and largest airport in Hawaii. The airport is named after Honolulu native and Medal of Honor recipient Daniel Inouye, who represented Hawaii in the United States Senate from 1963 until his death in 2012. The airport is in the Honolulu census-designated place 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Honolulu's central business district. The airport covers 4,220 acres (1,708 ha), more than 1% of Oahu's land.Daniel K. Inouye Airport offers nonstop flights to many places in North America, Asia, and Oceania. The airport serves as the main hub of Hawaiian Airlines and is also a base for Aloha Air Cargo. The airport is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, in which it is categorized as a large-hub primary commercial service facility.

In September 2013, 1,400 tons of molasses spilled into Honolulu Harbor. The spill was discovered on 9 September 2013. It was caused by a faulty pipe, for which the shipping company Matson Navigation Co. took responsibility. Molasses is an unregulated product, and neither Matson nor government officials had a contingency plan to respond to a molasses spill. Natural currents and weather were expected to eventually dilute and flush the molasses out of the harbor and a nearby lagoon.Divers in the harbor area reported that all sea life in the area were killed by the molasses, which instantly sank to the bottom of the harbor and caused widespread deoxygenation. Members of various coral species were injured or killed, and more than 26,000 fish and members of other marine species suffocated and died.The Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar on Maui produces molasses from fresh sugar cane, and ships it to the mainland to be processed and sold. Matson had been transporting molasses from Honolulu Harbor for 30 years and at the time was shipping it about once a week.

The 1999 Honolulu shootings or the Xerox murders were an incident of mass murder that occurred on November 2, 1999, in a Xerox Corporation building in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. Service technician Byran Koji Uyesugi shot at eight people; wounding seven fatally (six co-workers and his supervisor). This was the worst mass shooting in the history of Hawaii.

KKEA (1420 AM) is a radio station located in Honolulu, Hawaii. The station was formerly owned by Cox Radio and offers the ESPN Radio sports talk format, broadcasting at 1420 kHz with ERP of 5 kW. The station is currently owned and operated by Blow Up LLC and was marketed as ESPN 1420 before rebranding as ESPN Honolulu as of February 25, 2019. It also transmits on Oceanic Spectrum digital channel 884 for the entire state of Hawaii.

KNDI is a radio station located in Honolulu, Hawaii. The station is owned by Geronimo and Nellie Malabed, through licensee Geronimo Broadcasting, LLC, and offers a multicultural format, broadcasting at 1270. Its on-air liners are "Voices from Around the World" and has been on the air since 1960. It was also Hawaii's first radio station to have an all-female airstaff, hence the KNDI calls, which phonetically spells out "Candy." KNDI features programming in Philippine languages (Ilocano and Tagalog), Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Okinawan, Vietnamese, Lao, Spanish, Samoan, Tongan, Marshallese, Chuukese, Pohnpeian and English.

KREA (1540 AM) is a radio station located in Honolulu, Hawaii. The station is owned by JMK Communications and airs a Korean programming format, billing itself on air as "Hawaii Radio Seoul".

Honolulu Harbor, also called Kulolia and Ke Awa O Kou and the Port of Honolulu , is the principal seaport of Honolulu and the State of Hawaiʻi in the United States. From the harbor, the City & County of Honolulu was developed and urbanized, in an outward fashion, over the course of the modern history of the island of Oahu. It includes Matson, Inc. harbors on Sand Island.
