Ottawa Centre

Somerset (Ward 14) is a city ward in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It covers the neighbourhoods of Downtown Ottawa, Centretown, Lebreton Flats and most of Centretown West. It is Ottawa's smallest and most dense ward. It is represented on Ottawa City Council by Ariel Troster. It has an area of 6.5 km² and a projected 2006 population of 38,500. According to Canada 2001 Census it had a population of 36,365. The ward was created in 1994 when Dalhousie Ward and Wellington Ward were merged.

Ottawa Centre is an urban provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada that has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1968. While the riding's boundaries (mainly to the south and west as the north and east borders have remained the Ottawa River and Rideau Canal, respectively) have changed over the years to account for population changes, the riding has always comprised the central areas of Ottawa, the nation's capital.

The Shiners' Wars were violent outbreaks in Bytown (now Ottawa) from 1835 to 1845 between Irish-Catholic immigrants, led by Peter Aylen, and French Canadians, led by Joseph Montferrand.The war began when Aylen, a major Irish timber operator, organized a group of Irishmen to attack other timber operations—this group was known as the "Shiners." The Shiners attacked French-Canadian timber rafts and the town's political institutions, as well as brawling French Canadians on the streets. In an attempt to control the violence, the citizens of Bytown created the Association of the Preservation of the Public Peace in Bytown, which included armed patrols; however, the violence continued. In the spring of 1837, the violence was brought under control after the government deployed troops to arrest the Shiners. Occasional violence still occurred until 1845 by groups claiming to be the Shiners.

St Patrick's Basilica is a Roman Catholic Church in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Located at 281 Nepean Street (at the corner of Nepean and Kent) in Downtown Ottawa, it is the oldest church in the city that serves the English-speaking community. The Basilica is one of the regular buildings featured in the Doors Open Ottawa architectural heritage day.

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa is the diplomatic mission of Sri Lanka to Canada. The current High Commissioner is Asoka Girihagama.

The Embassy of Italy in Ottawa (Italian: Ambasciata d'Italia a Ottawa, French: Ambassade d'Italie à Ottawa) is Italy's embassy in Canada. It is located at 275 Slater Street, 21st floor, in Ottawa, the Canadian capital. Italy operates Canadian regional consulates in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Honorary consuls are also appointed in Calgary, Guelph, Halifax, Hamilton, Kelowna, London, Niagara Falls, Regina, Sarnia, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Windsor (ON) and Winnipeg.

The National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC, French: Conseil national des femmes du Canada, (CNFC)) is a Canadian advocacy organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, aimed at improving conditions for women, families, and communities. A federation of nationally-organized societies of men and women and local and provincial councils of women, it is the Canadian member of the International Council of Women (ICW). The Council has concerned itself in areas including women's suffrage, immigration, health care, education, mass media, the environment, and many others. Formed on October 27, 1893 in Toronto, Ontario, it is one of the oldest advocacy organizations in the country. Lady Aberdeen was elected the first president of the National Council of Women of Canada in 1893. Prominent Council leaders included Lady Gzowski, Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen, and Adelaide Hoodless.

L'esplanade Laurier is an office complex in downtown Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It consists of two 23-storey towers, a three storey underground parking garage and a podium containing a two-storey shopping mall. The entire structure is clad in white carrara marble, making it clearly stand out from the other towers in the city. At 88 metres tall, the two towers are the ninth and tenth tallest in the city. It is located at the intersection of major Ottawa streets, Laurier Avenue between Bank Street and O'Connor Street. The lower two levels of the buildings stretch across the entire block and house a small shopping arcade.

Constitution Square is a three-tower office complex, located in downtown Ottawa, Ontario at 340, 350 and 360 Albert Street. It is home to a variety of businesses, organizations and embassies. The three towers are owned and operated by global real estate investor, developer and owner Oxford Properties Group. The 1,058,046 square foot complex, located in the heart of the capital city's downtown core, is close to Ottawa's Parliament Hill and key federal buildings, and is a neighbour to the city's prominent financial and high tech industries. It is home of the Liberal Party of Canada. The first tower comprises 18 floors, and was completed in 1986, while tower two was completed in 1992 with 21 floors. In July 2005, it was announced that a third tower with 19 floors would be added to the complex, and tower three opened less than two years later, within the original budget.The building has underground parking, a fitness center and 24-hour security.

St. Elijah's Housing is a building in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Originally a church, it is currently a block of 40 residential apartments. The site at Lyon Street and Maclaren Street in the northwest of Centretown was originally home to a Pentecostal congregation. It was purchased by Antiochian Orthodox Lebanese immigrants who opened the St. Elijah Antiochian Orthodox Church in 1931. The original building was destroyed in a fire in 1949; the current Byzantine structure was erected to replace it. With the Lebanese Civil War Ottawa saw an influx of Antiochian Orthodox immigrants. The congregation thus decided to move to a larger structure on Riverside Drive. The building was sold in 1989 to a partnership of the local Anglican Diocese and CCOC, the Centretown Citizens (Ottawa) Corporation, a non-profit housing trust. In the Anglican half of the structure are twenty apartments for homeless women. In the CCOC portion there are twenty bachelor apartments. The conversion of the church into apartments while retaining the building's exterior character received a City of Ottawa Heritage Award.

The Rideau Club is a private social club in Ottawa, Ontario. The club was founded in 1865 by Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Étienne Cariter as a gentlemen's club, but since 1979 has been mixed-sex. For much of its history the club was populated primarily by parliamentarians. In 1876 the Rideau built its clubhouse at 84 Wellington Street, where it remained until the building burned down in 1979. Since the fire, the club has been located in the top floor of the Metropolitan Life Building at 99 Bank Street.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ottawa is the Netherlands's primary diplomatic mission in Canada. It is located in Constitution Square Tower II in Ottawa. The embassy consists of a political, economic and a consular section as well as a public diplomacy & cultural department. There is also a military attaché, who falls under the Ministry of Defense and can therefore operate more independently. Most staff is locally engaged. The embassy connects with Canadians via several events and activities. Embassy staff organizes events to strengthen economic ties with Canada and to increase trade. The political department initiates and cooperates in activities that underline that Canada and the Netherlands think alike on topics such as democratic values, gay rights, development aid, end-of-life decisions and sustainability. The embassy participates every year in a number of cultural events such as the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa, Dutch heritage month in Ontario, the EU Film Festival in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, Remembrance Day ceremonies across Canada and the Winter Celebration on the grounds of Rideau Hall. The embassy participates in Study & Go Abroad fairs in Canada and works on increasing academic partnerships between Canadian and Dutch universities and higher education schools. The consular section of the embassy is open three days per week, but can only be visited by appointment via an online booking system.The current ambassador of the Netherlands to Canada is Ines Coppoolse.The Netherlands operates Consulate General offices in Toronto and Vancouver.
