San Diego State University (SDSU) is a public research university in San Diego, California. Founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, it is the third-oldest university and southernmost in the 23-member California State University (CSU) system. In Fall 2022, SDSU hit an all time high enrollment record student body of nearly 37,000 and an alumni base of more than 300,000.It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity". In the 2015–16 fiscal year, the university obtained $130 million in public and private funding—a total of 707 awards—up from $120.6 million the previous fiscal year. As reported by the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index released by the Academic Analytics organization of Stony Brook, New York, SDSU had the highest research output of any small research university in the United States in 2006 and 2007. SDSU sponsors the second-highest number of Fulbright Scholars in the State of California, just behind UC Berkeley. Since 2005, the university has produced over 65 Fulbright student scholars.The university generates over $2.4 billion annually for the San Diego economy, while 60 percent of SDSU graduates remain in San Diego, making SDSU a primary educator of the region's work force. Committed to serving the diverse San Diego region, SDSU has one of the ten most ethnically and racially diverse student bodies among universities nationwide, and is also one of the top ten for the number of bachelor's degrees conferred upon minority students.San Diego State University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The San Diego State Aztecs are the athletic teams that represent San Diego State University (SDSU). San Diego State currently sponsors six men's and eleven women's sports at the varsity level. The Aztecs compete in NCAA Division I (FBS for football). The program's primary conference is the Mountain West Conference, though the men's soccer team competes in the Pac-12 Conference, women's water polo competes in the Golden Coast Conference, and women's lacrosse competes as an independent. On May 31, 2022, it was announced that women's lacrosse had received and accepted an invitation to join the Pac-12 Conference no later than the 2024 season (2023–24 school year).News reports (especially on local radio) often mention "Montezuma Mesa" or "news from the mesa" when discussing San Diego State-related sports events. The San Diego State campus is known as "Montezuma Mesa", as the university is situated on a mesa overlooking Mission Valley and is located at the intersection of Montezuma Road and College Avenue in the city of San Diego.

The San Diego State University College of Health and Human Services faculty, through advising, teaching, and supervising, offers students academic study, field placement, clinical experiences, and research opportunities. The College offers professional education in the health and human service disciplines. The College consists of the following group of professional schools, and departments: the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, the Department of Gerontology, and the Graduate School of Public Health.

Hepner Hall, designed by the senior architectural designer of the California Division of the State Architect, Howard Spencer Hazen, and completed in 1931, is the iconic academic building in the center of San Diego State University (SDSU)'s campus, just north of Malcolm A. Love Library at the entrance to the Campanile Walkway and main quad.Hepner Hall is home to SDSU's School of Social Work, along with the Department of Gerontology and the University Center on Aging. Several faculty offices and research centers also are housed in Hepner Hall, along with an assortment of classrooms and lecture halls.

Hardy Memorial Tower at San Diego State University, constructed as a Works Progress Administration project in 1931, is 11 stories (119.1 ft / 36.3 m) tall; it contains the Fletcher Symphonic Carillon (also known as the Fletcher Chimes) (installed 1946), consisting of 204 bells over 6 octaves. Hardy Memorial Tower is part of the original core of the SDSU campus on Montezuma mesa, and was the university's original library.

The College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) is an academic unit of San Diego State University in San Diego, California.

ENS 700 Field is a multipurpose athletic and recreation field at San Diego State University (SDSU), located in the center of campus at the intersection of Campanile Mall and Aztec Walk. ENS 700 Field is the home field of the Aztecs men's and women's rugby teams.

Malcolm A. Love Library (commonly referred to as University Library), opened in 1971, is the primary, central academic library serving multiple campuses of San Diego State University (SDSU) in Southern California and Northern Baja California, Mexico. Located on the Montezuma Mesa in the College Area of San Diego, California, the library underwent a major expansion to improve Library & Information Access for students institution-wide with construction of the Manchester Hall addition including a spectacular glass enclosed atrium to serve as the new entrance gateway for the University Library. The iconic design and architecture of the new glass and steel enclosed lobby, and its stated purpose, has earned the entire complex the reference The Info Dome. The University Library located at Centennial Plaza, east of Campanile Mall on the main campus of SDSU, occupies more than 500,000 square feet (46,000 m2), seats more than 3,000 people, and circulates more than 488,000 books yearly (as of 2011). It has more than 2.2 million volumes, 4.6 million microform items, and 140,000 maps.

The Graduate School of Public Health is one of the professional graduate schools of San Diego State University within its College of Health and Human Services. Located in the College Area neighborhood of San Diego, California, it is part of the Association of Schools of Public Health and is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. San Diego State University is a member of the Western Association of Graduate Schools, the Council of Graduate Schools in the United States, and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. The GSPH also maintains its own chapter in the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health. The school's mission is "to improve population health and well-being by building a diverse public health workforce to meet the needs of current and future communities."

SDSU Transit Center is a station on San Diego Trolley's Green Line. The station is underground (the only such station in the system) and has side platforms. The station is located in the Aztec Green on the south portion of the campus of San Diego State University. The station entrances are between College Avenue and Campanile Drive. The station is very popular with students and staff who commute to the university because of the high cost and low availability of parking around campus.

Aztec Bowl was a football stadium (a Works Progress Administration project) on the San Diego State University campus in San Diego, California.

The Aztec Student Union is a student union in the center of San Diego State University's campus, just east of Malcolm A. Love Library. The Aztec Student Union was known as the Aztec Center from 1968 to 2011, when it was demolished for the Aztec Student Union. The Aztec Student Union leads into the heart of the SDSU campus and is located near many classrooms and administrative services.
