As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,241 and an area of 19.7 square kilometres (7.6 sq mi).Melazzo borders the following municipalities: Acqui Terme, Bistagno, Cartosio, Castelletto d'Erro, Cavatore, and Terzo.

In 1870 Giovanni Ceruti designed a small pavilion, known as La Bollente, for the spot at the centre of the town where the waters bubble up at 75 °C (167 °F).

Its name becomes from the homonymous Visone creek, that flows into its territory and enters Bormida river not far from the village. Visone borders the following municipalities: Acqui Terme, Grognardo, Morbello, Morsasco, Prasco, and Strevi.
