Port of Vaasa

The Vaskiluoto power stations complex situated on the Gulf of Bothnia island of Vaskiluoto in Vaasa, Finland, comprises three separate power stations connected to the Finnish national grid, Fingrid. Vaskiluoto 1, a 38 MW coal-fired power station commissioned in 1958, has been decommissioned. When built, it was the largest power plant in Finland. Vaskiluoto 2, commissioned in 1982, was originally built to burn coal, with generation capacity of 230 MW electricity and 175 MW district heating. In 2012 a 140 MW biomass gasification plant was added alongside, mainly burning offcuts and other by-products from the forestry and timber production industries. Both plants remain operational. Vaskiluoto 3, a 160 MW plant powered by fuel oil was originally commissioned in 1972, later converted to coal, and subsequently refurbished and restored to burning oil. It is mostly kept on standby, but can be activated to help meet peak power demand.In 2020, the disused oil storage tanks, excavated into the bedrock, were converted to energy storage use. Waste heat energy from industry, as well as wind-generated energy, is stored in the water-filled tanks in the form of thermal energy, and used mainly for district heating although it can also be used to generate electricity.

The Vaskiluoto railway station (Finnish: Vaskiluodon rautatieasema, Swedish: Vasklot järnvägsstation) is located in the city of Vaasa, Finland, on the island and district of Vaskiluoto. It is the terminus of the Seinäjoki–Vaasa railway, and it only serves cargo transport in the port of Vaasa; the nearest station with passenger services is Vaasa. The Finnish Heritage Agency has declared the Vaskiluoto station area a protected culture site of national importance.

Vaskiluoto (Swedish: Vasklot) is a Finnish island in the Gulf of Bothnia, immediately in front of the city centre of Vaasa, Finland. It is connected to the mainland by the Vaskiluoto road and rail bridge, and has a surface area of 2.5 square kilometres (1 sq mi).Vaskiluoto is also one of the 12 districts of the city of Vaasa, with a population of c. 390 residents and c. 900 jobs.Facilities located on the island include the Port of Vaasa, with (among other things) a regular ferry service by Wasa Line to Umeå, Sweden, the Vaskiluoto power stations complex, as well as various leisure and tourist attractions. The mostly disused Vaskiluoto railway station is situated on the island, and continues to service the port terminal. In Vaskiluoto, Tropiclandia Water Park is located right next to a local spa hotel. In the immediate vicinity of Tropiclandia was the now deserted Wasalandia Amusement Park, which ceased operations in 2015 due to a small number of visitors.

Wasalandia Amusement Park was an amusement park in Vaasa, Finland. It opened in 1988 and closed after summer 2015. It offered up to 28 rides for the whole family. The park was owned by Puuharyhmä Oyj (formerly Tervakosken Puuhamaa Oy) until 2007. In its last years, Wasalandia was owned by the Spanish company Aspro Ocio, S.A. Wasalandia was located on the island Vaskiluoto some 3 kilometres from downtown Vaasa. The indoor waterpark Tropiclandia located nearby continued its operations. Trafficland Pirateland Jumping and Climbingland Wild West Funfairland 3D Movie theatre with moving seats was located in the Wild West section of the Wasalandia park. The park also featured two restaurants and kiosks, and a souvenir and snack shop.

The Academic Library of Tritonia is a library that serves the educational and research needs of three different universities in Vaasa, Finland. These universities include University of Vaasa, Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, and Novia University of Applied Sciences. The library has units in Vaasa and Jakobstad.

The University of Vaasa (Finnish: Vaasan yliopisto, Swedish: Vasa universitet) is a multidisciplinary, business-oriented university in Vaasa, Finland. The campus of the university is situated by the Gulf of Bothnia adjacent to downtown Vaasa. The university has evolved from a school of economics founded in 1968 to a university consisting of four different schools: The School of Accounting and Finance, The School of Management, The School of Marketing and Communications and the School of Technology and Innovations. University of Vaasa is one of the largest business universities in Finland. The university has personnel of around 500 which includes a teaching staff of 180 and 54 professors. Around 5000 students are currently studying in various degree programs at the university.

The Novia University of Applied Sciences (Swedish: Yrkeshögskolan Novia) is an institution of higher professional education (vocational university) in Finland. It offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Swedish in Vaasa, Turku, Raseborg and Jakobstad. The university was formed on August 1, 2008, by the merging of the Sydväst Polytechnic and the Swedish Polytechnic.

The Ostrobothnian Museum (Finnish: Pohjanmaan museo) is a provincial museum of cultural history, which also serves as provincial art museum and a museum of natural science. The museum building, designed by Eino Forsman in 1927, and the museum’s exhibition wing, planned by architect Erik Kråkström in 1967 are located next to the Marianpuisto park in central Vaasa.A medical doctor from Vaasa, Karl Hedman (1864-1931) was active in creation of the museum. The building was constructed in 1930, and the Hedmans had their own home and collection on one floor. They had no children, and left their collection to fund, which later donated it to the city.

The Vaasa Finnish Baptist Church (also known as the Vaasa Finnish Baptist Congregation; Finnish: Vaasan baptistiseurakunta) is a Finnish Baptist congregation in Vaasa, Finland. It belongs to the Finnish Baptist Church and was founded in 1908. The current congregation building is located in the Palosaari district of Vaasa. Vaasa also has another, Swedish-speaking Baptist congregation.

Wasa theatre (Wasa Teater) is a professional Swedish-language theatre in the Finnish city of Vaasa. It is the regional theatre of Österbotten and was founded in 1919.

Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (Finnish: Vaasan ammattikorkeakoulu, Vamk, Swedish: Vasa yrkeshögskola) popularly called VAMK, is an international higher education institution in Vaasa, Finland. VAMK educates Bachelors of Business Administration, Engineering, Hospitality Management and Social Services as well as Registered Nurses and Public Health Nurses in Finnish, Swedish and English for the demanding needs of the working life. It has approximately 3,300 students enrolled and a staff of circa 250 members.

The Statue of Liberty (Finnish: Suomen Vapaudenpatsas; Swedish: Finlands frihetsstaty) is a monumental bronze sculpture complex located in the Market Square of Vaasa in Ostrobothnia, Finland. The statue celebrates the victory of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War in 1918. The height of the work with its pedestals is 14 metres (46 ft) and the height of the part on top of the pedestal is 6 metres (20 ft). The sculpture weighs 3.6 tonnes (4.0 tons). The sculpture was designed by Yrjö Liipola and Jussi Mäntynen, and it was unveiled in 1938.
