Essling (German pronunciation: [ˈɛslɪŋ] ) is part of Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna.

For a long time, it was not necessary to build a Harbour in Vienna, because the existing natural landing points were sufficient for the level of trade on the Danube. It was only when steamships began to arrive in great numbers that a harbour offering safe berths became essential. Even then however, goods were for the most part loaded and unloaded at an unenclosed river harbour that was established at the end of the 19th century.

In the Battle of Aspern-Essling (21–22 May 1809), Napoleon crossed the Danube near Vienna, but the French and their allies were attacked and forced back across the river by the Austrians under Archduke Charles. It was the first time Napoleon had been personally defeated in a major battle, as well as his first defeat in 10 years since the Siege of Acre. Archduke Charles drove out the French but fell short of destroying their army. The Austrian artillery dominated the battlefield, firing 53,000 rounds compared to 24,300 French. The French lost over 20,000 men including one of Napoleon's ablest field commanders and closest friends, Marshal Jean Lannes.

Groß-Enzersdorf is a town and municipality in the district of Gänserndorf in the Austrian state of Lower Austria, directly east of Vienna and north of the river Danube. Apart from the town itself, it also comprises seven subordinated municipalities.

The Battle of Schwechat was a battle in the Hungarian war of Independence of 1848-1849, fought on 30 October 1848 between the revolutionary Hungarian Army led by Lieutenant General János Móga against the army of the Austrian Empire led by Lieutenant General Josip Jelačić, at Schwechat, near Vienna. This was the last battle of 1848 in the Transdanubian campaign. The Hungarian Army wanted to relieve the revolutionaries from Vienna, besieged by the Austrian imperial army, but they were defeated. Vienna fell on the next day.

Schwechat (German pronunciation: [ˈʃvɛçaːt] ) is a city southeast of Vienna known for the Vienna International Airport and Schwechater beer. The city is home to the refineries of the Austrian national oil company OMV.

Aspernstraße is a station on U2 of the Vienna U-Bahn. It is located in Aspern in the Donaustadt District. The station was opened on 2 October 2010 with the opening of the third section of the U2 between Stadion and Aspernstraße. The station has two tracks on an island platform with departures towards Karlsplatz and Seestadt. To the north of the station is a siding, allowing trains to terminate and then change directions. Between 2 October 2010 and 5 October 2013, Aspernstraße was the eastern terminus of the U2. Upon the opening of Seestadt, which is now the eastern terminus of the line, approximately every second train terminates at Aspernstaße. Due to its location in the center of the Donaustadt district, directly on Donau Straße (B3), Aspernstraße station is a key transportation point in the east of the city. In addition to the U2, five bus lines terminate at the station. The station is a key connection between lines from the surrounding areas of Hirschstetten and Essling as well as the eastern Viennese surroundings, to the metro system.

Lina-Loos-Platz is a station on the U2 line of the Vienna U-Bahn, in Aspern, Donaustadt, Vienna's 22nd district. The station opened on 19 January 2026.
