Hook Lighthouse

Hook Head (Irish: Rinn Duáin), historically called Rindowan, is a headland in County Wexford, Ireland, on the east side of the estuary of The Three Sisters (Rivers Nore, Suir and Barrow). It is part of the Hook peninsula and is adjacent to the historic townland of Loftus Hall. It is situated on the R734 road, 50 kilometres (31 mi) from Wexford town. In Irish its name was originally Rinn Dubháin, Dubhán's point, named for a 5th-century Brittonic saint of that name (literally "little black [haired] one"). The English name is possibly a calque of his name, incorrectly read as being dubán, "fishing-hook".

The Hook Peninsula is a peninsula in County Wexford, Ireland. It has been a gateway to south-east Ireland for successive waves of newcomers, including the Vikings, Anglo-Normans and the English. The coastline has a number of beaches. The peninsula's fishing villages, bird watching on the mudflats of Bannow Estuary, deep sea angling, snorkeling and swimming are part of the area's maritime life. The area's rivers, valleys, estuaries and hills have long provided south-west Wexford with rich grazing land.

Slade (Irish: An Slaod) is a small village and townland in County Wexford, Ireland. The townland, which has an area of approximately 1 square kilometre (0.4 sq mi), sits on the Hook Peninsula and had a population of 52 people as of the 2011 census. Slade has historically been a fishing port, and was defended by Slade Castle from the late 15th century. In the south of the townland, there is evidence of an earlier ringfort. The harbour in Slade village was extended in the mid-19th century and built upon piers dating from at least the 17th century. A salt-house was built here in the 17th century, to salt (preserve) the fish landed in the harbour. There is a small beach next to the harbour, and Hook Sub Aqua Club (a scuba diving club) is based nearby.

Slade Castle is a tower house and National Monument in County Wexford, Ireland. It is located in the village of Slade on the Hook Peninsula and primarily dates to the late 15th or early 16th century.

Loftus Hall is a large country house on the Hook peninsula, County Wexford, Ireland. Built on the site of the original Redmond Hall, it is said to have been haunted by the devil and the ghost of a woman. Loftus Hall has a long history of ownership, through private residence, landlords, two different orders of nuns, and a hotel in the 1980s run by members of the Devereux family. Purchased by Shane and Aidan Quigley in 2011, Loftus Hall was opened to the public in 2012 with guided tours of the house and a fully restored walled gardens. It was closed in 2020 and sold in 2021. As of 2022, it was under renovation and not open to the public.

SM UC-44 was a German Type UC II minelaying submarine or U-boat in the German Imperial Navy (German: Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. The U-boat was ordered on 20 November 1915 and was launched on 10 October 1916. She was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 4 November 1916 as SM UC-44. In 6 patrols UC-44 was credited with sinking 28 ships, either by torpedo or by mines laid. UC-44 was sunk by the detonation of one of her own mines off the Irish coast at position 52°07′N 6°59′W on 4 August 1917; its commander, Kurt Teppenjohanns, was the only survivor. UC-44's wreck was raised by the Royal Navy in September 1917 and later broken up.Two aspects of her service are noteworthy. UC-44 was the first submarine to use the tactic of releasing oil and debris from her torpedo tubes to fool the enemy into believing it had been sunk by depth charges. Her actual sinking, sometimes claimed to be the result of British deception, also yielded intelligence that showed how little effect the Dover Barrage antisubmarine defences were having on the U-boats and forced changes in its command and operation before the year ended.

Waterford Harbour (Irish: Loch Dá Chaoch / Cuan Phort Láirge) is a natural harbour at the mouth of the Three Sisters; the River Nore, the River Suir and the River Barrow in Ireland. It is navigable for shipping to both Waterford and New Ross. The Port of Waterford is capable of accommodating vessels up to 32,000 tons dwt. It separates County Waterford from County Wexford on the eastern side of the estuary. Dunmore East is a fishing village and popular holiday resort situated on the west side of the harbour and is generally considered to be the western limit. On the west side, there is also a headland called Creaden Head The eastern limit is Hook Head, marked by the Hook Lighthouse, on the Hook peninsula.

Dunmore East (Irish: Dún Mór, meaning 'big fort') is a popular tourist and fishing village in County Waterford, Ireland. Situated on the west side of Waterford Harbour on Ireland's southeastern coast, it lies within the barony of Gaultier (An Gháilltír – "land of the foreigner" in Irish); a reference to the influx of Viking and Norman settlers in the area.

Gaultier GAA Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located on the outskirts of Dunmore East (An Dún Mór Thoir in Irish) which is a popular tourist and fishing village in County Waterford, Ireland. Situated on the west side of Waterford Harbour on Ireland's southeastern coast, it lies within the barony of Gaultier (Gáll Tír – "foreigners' land" in Irish): a reference to the influx of firstly Viking (Norwegian) and then Norman settlers in the area. The club is exclusively concerned with Gaelic Football.

Woodstown House is a country house in the townland of Woodtown Lower in eastern County Waterford, Ireland. The current house was built in the Regency-style in 1823 but may incorporate the fabric of an earlier house dating to the 1720s. The house was built by Robert Shapland Carew to designs attributable to George Richard Pain (1793 - 1838). It is a detached three-bay two-storey house, with three-bay two-storey side elevations, and seven-bay two-storey service return wing to north-west on a U-shaped plan.Robert was elevated to the peerage as Baron Carew in 1834 and Woodstown House became his seat.At the time of the Irish Tourist Association survey in 1945, the house was owned by the Hearne family but was unoccupied. It was subsequently let to visitors who included, in 1967, Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy, widow of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and her children.

Duncannon (Irish: Dún Canann) is a village in southwest County Wexford, Ireland. Bordered to the west by Waterford harbour and sitting on a rocky headland jutting into the channel is the strategically prominent Duncannon Fort which dominates the village. Primarily a fishing village, Duncannon also relies on tourism and is situated on the marked "Ring of Hook" drive. Duncannon beach, a mile-long beach, was once a blue flag recipient.Duncannon Fort, which was built in 1588, was used as a location for the opening scenes of the 2002 remake of 'The Count of Monte Cristo', starring Jim Caviezel and Richard Harris. After being closed for some time, Duncannon Fort reopened to the public in 2016 when guided tours recommenced.

The siege of Duncannon took place in 1645, during the Irish Confederate Wars. An Irish Catholic Confederate army under Thomas Preston besieged and successfully took the town of Duncannon in County Wexford from an English Parliamentarian garrison. The siege was the first conflict in Ireland in which mortars were utilized.
