Kernstown, Virginia

The Second Battle of Kernstown was fought on July 24, 1864, at Kernstown, Virginia, outside Winchester, Virginia, as part of the Valley Campaigns of 1864 in the American Civil War. The Confederate Army of the Valley under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early soundly defeated the Union Army of West Virginia under Brig. Gen. George Crook and drove it from the Shenandoah Valley back over the Potomac River into Maryland. As a result, Early was able to launch the Confederacy's last major raid into northern Union territory, attacking the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Maryland and West Virginia and burning Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in retaliation for the burning of civilian houses and farms earlier in the campaign.

Opequon Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church located near Winchester, in Frederick County, Virginia. It was built in 1897, and is a one-story, gable-roofed, random-rubble stone church. It features Gothic-arched colored-glass, one-over-one windows and a three-stage corner bell tower containing an entrance. Also on the property are four burying grounds (one contributing) with the oldest marked grave site dated to 1742.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

The First Battle of Kernstown was fought on March 23, 1862, in Frederick County and Winchester, Virginia, the opening battle of Confederate Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's campaign through the Shenandoah Valley during the American Civil War. Attempting to tie down the Union forces in the Valley, under the overall command of Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, Jackson received incorrect intelligence that a small detachment under Col. Nathan Kimball was vulnerable, but it was in fact a full infantry division more than twice the size of Jackson's force. His initial cavalry attack was forced back and he immediately reinforced it with a small infantry brigade. With his other two brigades, Jackson sought to envelop the Union right by way of Sandy Ridge. But Col. Erastus B. Tyler's brigade countered this movement, and, when Kimball's brigade moved to his assistance, the Confederates were driven from the field. There was no effective Union pursuit. Although the battle was a Confederate tactical defeat, it represented a strategic victory for the South by preventing the Union from transferring forces from the Shenandoah Valley to reinforce the Peninsula Campaign against the Confederate capital, Richmond. Following the earlier Battle of Hoke's Run, the First Battle of Kernstown may be considered the second among Jackson's rare defeats.

Homespun, also known as the Bell House, is a historic home located near Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. It is a vernacular, 2+1⁄2-story log, frame, stone and brick structure dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The earliest section was built in the 1790s, and is a three-bay wooden structure consisting of two log pens with a frame connector, or dogtrot, and covered with weatherboards. A two-story, two-bay, stone and brick addition was built about 1820. Also on the property is a contributing stone smokehouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Rose Hill Farm is a historic home and farm located near Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. It is a vernacular Federal style, 2+1⁄2-story brick and stucco structure built about 1819. The earliest section was built about 1797, and began as a three-room-plan, 1+1⁄2-story, log structure built upon a limestone foundation. About 1850, the house was enhanced with vernacular Greek Revival-style elements. Also on the property are a contributing summer kitchen (c. 1862), cistern (date unknown), corn crib (date unknown), and barn (c.1850–1860).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Winchester Coca-Cola Bottling Works is a historic Coca-Cola bottling plant located at Winchester, Virginia. It was built in 1940–1941, and is a two-story, reinforced concrete Art Deco style factory faced with brick. The asymmetrical four-bay façade features large plate-glass shop windows on the first floor that allowed the bottling operation to be viewed by the passing public. It has a one-story rear addition built in 1960, and a two-story warehouse added in 1974. Also on the property is a contributing one-story, brick storage building with a garage facility constructed in 1941. The facility closed in 2006.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The Apple Blossom Mall is a 473,672 square feet (44,006 m2) shopping mall that was built in 1982 on the south side of Winchester, Virginia. It has 83 stores. Its anchor stores are Belk (former Leggett), AMC Classic, and JCPenney. The mall's one vacant anchor space was once occupied by Sears. The shopping mall was acquired by Simon Property Group in 1999. It is now managed and 49.1% owned by Simon Property Group. In 2007, Simon Property Group announced a major lifestyle redevelopment at Apple Blossom Mall, including the addition of a RC Theatres 16-screen complex on the property. Construction on the theatres was to begin in the spring of 2007 with the opening scheduled for late 2007 or early 2008. This lifestyle center which was to include three lifestyle-type tenants, two big boxes, an additional department store and new restaurants never materialized. There is now an AMC Classic (formerly Carmike) located in the mall. In mid-2012, mall representatives announced renovation plans for the mall. Among them will be new floors and lighting, a children's play area, and a 12-screen theater to replace the existing theater.On November 7, 2019, it was announced that Sears would be closing this location a part of a plan to close 96 stores nationwide. The store closed in February 2020.On March 29, 2020, the mall closed temporarily due to COVID-19 concerns. It reopened on May 15, 2020.

John Handley High School (usually referred to as Jhhs) is an endowed public high school located in the city of Winchester, Virginia. It is a part of Winchester Public Schools. It was founded by a grant from Judge John Handley, hence the school mascot, the Judges. Construction on John Handley High School started in 1922, and continues to the present day. Recently, the school completed the final phase of its multimillion-dollar renovation with the addition of an 8-lane track and a turf football field. The school is planning renovations to its tennis courts in the upcoming years, due in part to the girls' three-peat state champions. In 1998, Handley was placed on the list of the National Register of Historic Places "for its local historic significance as well as its prominence as an architectural landmark."

The First Battle of Winchester, fought on May 25, 1862, in and around Frederick County, Virginia, and Winchester, Virginia, was a major victory in Confederate Army Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's Campaign through the Shenandoah Valley during the American Civil War. Jackson enveloped the right flank of the Union Army under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks and pursued it as it fled across the Potomac River into Maryland. Jackson's success in achieving force concentration early in the fighting allowed him to secure a more decisive victory which had escaped him in previous battles of the campaign.

Fort Colvin, also known as Covill's Fort and Colvin House, is a historic home located near Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. It was built about 1750, and is a 1 1/2-story, stone and frame building with a metal gable roof and interior chimney. It measures 24 feet by 34 feet and is nearly centrally positioned over a spring. Also on the property are a contributing site of a small domestic outbuilding and the ruins of a small footbridge. Fort Colvin is believed to have been built by some of the first European settlers in the first multi-ethnic community west of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. It is thought to have been used as a settler's fort by Joseph Colvill in 1755.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Abram's Delight is a historic home located in Winchester, Virginia. Built in 1754, it is the oldest house in the city. It was owned by the Hollingsworth family for almost 200 years and is typical of the Shenandoah Valley architecture of the Scotch-Irish settlers. The property was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR) in 1972 and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1973. Abram's Delight currently serves as a historic house museum.

Shenandoah University is a private university in Winchester, Virginia. It has an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students across more than 200 areas of study in six schools: College of Arts & Sciences (including the Division of Education and Leadership and the Division of Applied Technology), School of Business, Shenandoah Conservatory, Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy, Eleanor Wade Custer School of Nursing, and the School of Health Professions (Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies and Physical Therapy). Shenandoah University is one of five United Methodist Church-affiliated institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
