Ensley High School

Ensley is a large city neighborhood in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It was once a separate and thriving industrial city. It was formally incorporated on February 12, 1899, but later annexed into Birmingham on January 1, 1910 under the "Greater Birmingham" legislation.

On September 19, 1902, a stampede occurred at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing 115 people.

The Bank of Ensley, at 19th St. and Ave. E in Birmingham, Alabama, was built in 1918. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.The bank was organized in 1899 and was the first bank in the western section of Birmingham. Three years after this building was built, the president and vice-president sold the business to a vice president and a former cashier. The bank "flourished" through the 1920s, but failed on January 10, 1930.The building, designed by local architect H.O. Breeding, is Classical Revival in style.

The Belview Heights Historic District, in Birmingham, Alabama, is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It runs roughly along 41st., 42nd., 43rd., 44th, and 45th Sts., and M and Martin Aves. The listing included 355 contributing buildings on 150 acres (0.61 km2).It includes 20 of the original 30 square blocks of Belview Heights, a neighborhood developed in the former town of Ensley, Alabama.The district has "an impressive assemblage of architectural styles popular in residential suburbs throughout the United States in the first half of the 20th century" and in particular "boasts one of the largest saturations of Tudor Revival architecture in Birmingham, reflecting the popularity of that particular style from the 1920s through the 1940s. The district contains examples of Colonial and Spanish Revival, American Foursquare, minimal traditional, and ranch houses as well as a large number of Bungalow/Craftsman dwellings. Of the 423 resources located in the historic district, 154 can be classified as Tudor Revival-style."It includes two non-residential buildings: Central Park Fire Station #24 (c.1915), 1644 44th St, Tudor Revival in style, a common bond brick and steel two-story building noted as "an excellent example of utilizing early twentieth-century revival-style architecture in the design of a municipal building. The Tudor Revival style fire station blends-in with the surrounding residential architecture of the district." Central Park Presbyterian Church (c.1950), designed by Birmingham architect George Turner, whose architecture includes "Spanish and Mediterranean elements, including buttresses, spiral colonettes, palladian windows, a tile roof, and an octagonal lantern resting atop a three-tiered square bell tower. From the 1920s through the 1950s, George Turner, the architect of Central Park Presbyterian Church, designed scores of dwellings throughout Birmingham in the Spanish and Mediterranean Revival Styles, including a number of churches."

P.D. Jackson-Olin High School (J-O) is a four-year public high school in Birmingham, Alabama. It is one of seven high schools in the Birmingham City School System. Founded in 1952 as Western Olin High School, it was later renamed P.D. Jackson-Olin High School to honor its first principal, Dr. Pierre Denson Jackson, who led the school to excellence during its first 21 years. The school in its current form took shape in 2006 when J-O merged with Ensley High School as part of systemwide school consolidation. School colors are kelly green and gold, and the athletic teams are called the mustangs. J-O competes in AHSAA Class 6A athletics.

On July 10, 1991, a L'Express Airlines Beechcraft C99, flying as Flight 508 originating in New Orleans, and in transit from Mobile to Birmingham, crashed while attempting to make an ILS approach to Runway 5 (since renumbered to Runway 6) at Birmingham Municipal Airport (now Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport) in Birmingham, Alabama. The plane crashed in the Fairview area near Five Points West in the Ensley neighborhood and subsequently injured four persons on the ground, as well as destroying two homes. Of the 15 occupants on board, there were 13 fatalities. The cause of the crash was attributed to the captain's decision to attempt an instrument approach into severe thunderstorms resulting in a loss of control of the airplane. To date it is the deadliest commercial aviation accident in Alabama history.

Mount Ararat Baptist Church is a historic church at 1920 Slayden Avenue, Ensley in Birmingham, Alabama. It is located in the Ensley suburb, west of downtown Birmingham, and overlooks Highway 239. It was originally built in 1929 but was modified in 1950 to add a red brick veneer.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It has also been known as Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church.It was designed by African-American architect Wallace Rayfield and is described as having "a restrained Gothic Revival design". It is a cross-gabled church originally built in 1929 but veneered in smooth varitone red brick in 1950. It has a concrete foundation and a multi-gable asphalt shingle roof.The church is significant for its association during 1956 to 1963 with the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and with the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham.

Fairfield High Preparatory School is a public high school located in Fairfield, Alabama, United States, a suburb of Birmingham, and serves grades 9–12. It is the only high school in the Fairfield City School System. School colors are purple, gold, maroon, and white. The athletic teams are called the Tigers. Fairfield competes in AHSAA Class 5A athletics.Fairfield High Preparatory School, historically known as Fairfield High School, was established in 1928 to serve white students living in the Fairfield area. A second high school, Fairfield Industrial High School, was established for African-American students. Fairfield High School was integrated in 1969.

The W. F. "Bill" Harris State Fair Arena (called Bill Harris Arena or Fair Park Arena) is a 5,000-seat multipurpose indoor arena located at the Alabama State Fairgrounds. The arena is used primarily for basketball, but also hosts concerts and other events. The arena has previously served as the home of the Birmingham Magicians and the Birmingham Blitz of the American Basketball Association and the Alabama Outlawz of X-League Indoor Football. It is named in honor of Bill Harris, longtime athletics director for Birmingham City Schools. In 2022, it will be the venue for the artistic roller skating and inline hockey competitions at the 2022 World Games.

The Birmingham CrossPlex is a $46 million indoor track and aquatic facility developed by the City of Birmingham, Alabama as the centerpiece of the redevelopment of the Alabama State Fairgrounds near Five Points West. The facility's 200-meter hydraulically-banked running track and 50-meter swimming and diving pool are used by high school and college teams for training and competition. The CrossPlex facility opened on August 20, 2011. The Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau has projected a $13 million economic impact for the venue's first year of operation, based on events which had been booked prior to opening. An additional warm-up pool, which would be usable by the public when not needed for events, was added soon later.

Alabama's 9th congressional district was formerly apportioned to portions of central and western Alabama from 1893 until 1963 when the seat was lost due to reapportionment after the 1960 United States Census.

Birmingham International Raceway, (BIR) (formerly Fairgrounds Raceway, Birmingham Super Speedway, Birmingham Super Raceway and Birmingham International Speedway) was a 5/8-mile oval paved racetrack located at the Alabama State Fairgrounds in the Five Points West neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. It was used primarily for late-model automobile racing.
