Principality of Salerno

Salerno (UK: , US: , Italian: [saˈlɛrno] (listen); Neapolitan: Salierno, [saˈljernə]) is an ancient city and commune in Campania, southwestern Italy, and is the capital of the namesake province, being the second largest city in the region by number of inhabitants, after Naples. It is located on the Gulf of Salerno on the Tyrrhenian Sea. In recent history the city hosted Victor Emmanuel III, the King of Italy, who moved from Rome in 1943 after Italy negotiated a peace with the Allies in World War II, making Salerno the capital of the "Government of the South" (Regno del Sud) and therefore provisional government seat for six months. Some of the Allied landings during Operation Avalanche (the invasion of Italy) occurred near Salerno. Human settlement at Salerno has a rich and vibrant past, dating back to pre-historic times. In the early Middle Ages it was an independent Lombard principality, the Principality of Salerno, which around the 11th century comprised most of Southern Italy. During this time, the Schola Medica Salernitana, the first medical school in the world, was founded. The Normans in 1077 made Salerno the capital of their rule in all continental southern Italy. In the 16th century, under the Sanseverino family, among the most powerful feudal lords in southern Italy, the city became a great centre of learning, culture and the arts, and the family hired several of the greatest intellectuals of the time. Later, in 1694, the city was struck by several catastrophic earthquakes and plagues. During a period of Spanish rule the city suffered a crisis which would last until the 18th century, but under Napoleon Salerno became part of the Parthenopean Republic. In the 19th century Salerno supported ideas of the Risorgimento and welcomed Garibaldi in 1861. The city is divided into three distinct zones: the medieval sector, the 19th century sector and the more densely populated post-war area, with its several apartment blocks.A patron saint of Salerno is Saint Matthew, the Apostle, whose relics are kept here at the crypt of Salerno Cathedral.

The historic Archdiocese of Salerno was in existence from the tenth century, having been elevated from a sixth-century diocese. The Diocese of Acerno was combined with the archdiocese in 1818.On Saturday, May 4, 2019, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Andrea Bellandi, until then the Vicar general of Florence, as Archbishop, succeeding Archbishop Luigi Moretti.

Minerva's Garden (Giardino della Minerva) is located in the heart of the old town of Salerno, in a zone known as the "Plaium montis" in the Middle Ages. It is halfway along an ideal route that runs along the axis of the walled and terraced vegetable gardens, climbing from the Municipal Park, near the river Fusandola, towards the Arechi Castle.

The Port of Salerno (Italian: Porto di Salerno) is a port serving Salerno, southwestern Italy. The port of Salerno, located in the gulf of the Tyrrhenian Sea, is registered in the class of II category of seaports. It is one of the major domestic ports and plays an important role in the industrial and commercial system of the center-south. In 2009, 18,426,447 tonnes and 562,782 passengers passed through the port. The port is 350 metres (1,150 ft) in length, and the West Quay is 1,180 metres (3,870 ft) long and the East Quay is 1,550 metres (5,090 ft) long. Manfredi Pier is 380 metres (1,250 ft) in length.

The Accademia Musicale Jacopo Napoli (English: Jacopo Napoli Academy) is a music institute in Cava de' Tirreni. It was founded in 1987 by Felice Cavaliere and named after Jacopo Napoli, famous Neapolitan composer. It organizes Master classes in the major musical instruments as well as singing, string instruments and conducting. The music courses have been presented by the Academy Jacopo Napoli of Cava de’ Tirreni since 1987 and annually attract hundreds of young musicians from all over the world who receive advanced training under the guidance of internationally renowned teachers and performers. Among the teachers at the Academy are Leonid Margarius, Sonig Tchakerian, Marco Fiorini, Gabriele Geminiani and many others. Today, the summer Academy of Cava de’ Tirreni can be considered as one of the major musical training programmes in the Country due to the outstanding level of the renowned teaching staff on its roster and the artistic level and number of the participants. The Academy organizes also the Festival of Chamber Music "Le Corti dell'Arte", which takes place in August, where artists such as Michele Campanella, Maxence Larrieu, and François-Joël Thiollier have performed. The Festival takes place in the ancient courts of the noble palaces of the Old Town of Cava de' Tirreni. For almost a decade, the Academy has organized a prestigious course of orchestral conducting held by Bruno Aprea; it aimed at the production of operas that have been performed in concert. During the past years, the Academy organized many events; one of the most important is the Amalfi Coast Music & Arts Festival in collaboration with the Center for Musical Studies in Washington. The Academy organized also manifold concert seasons and the International Singing Competition "Vissi d'Arte", in Eboli.
