The City of Edinburgh Council (Scottish Gaelic: Comhairle Baile Dhùn Èideann) is the local government authority covering the City of Edinburgh council area. Almost half of the council area is the area of Edinburgh, capital of Scotland. With a population of 526,470 in mid-2019, it is the second most populous local authority area in Scotland. The council took on its current form in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, replacing the City of Edinburgh District Council of the Lothian region, which had been created in 1975. The history of local government in Edinburgh, however, stretches back much further. Around 1130, David I made the town a royal burgh and a burgh council, based at the Old Tolbooth is recorded continuously from the 14th century. The council is currently based in Edinburgh City Chambers with a main office nearby at Waverley Court.

Longstone is a suburb of Edinburgh in Scotland. The area is primarily residential in nature, although the area includes several small shops, eateries and supermarkets, as well as one of the main bus depots for the city's buses. The population of Longstone (including Saughton) was 4,678 in 2019.

Parkhead is a residential area of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It was one of the smallest wards in the Edinburgh City Council before a reorganisation into larger multi-member wards in 2007; since then it has been part of the Sighthill/Gorgie ward.Located about 4 miles (6.4 km) south-west of the city centre, the area was built in 1940s and contains low-rise houses, mainly in the cottage flat (four-in-a-block) format with Art Deco features and unique red roofs. Parkhead is bounded to the north by the A71 Calder Road (with the Fairbrae and Broomhouse neighbourhoods beyond), to the east by Longstone Road and a development at 'The Green' completed in 2021, to the west by Sighthill, and to the south by Murrayburn Road (opposite the Lothian Buses Longstone Depot, as well as the Murrayburn Depot which in 2019 has been secured for the future housing development of around 200 units).

Stenhouse is a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It lies to the west of the City Centre, adjacent to Whitson and Saughton Mains and close to Broomhouse and Chesser. It is a mainly residential area. The area derives its name from the Stanhope or Stenhope family who held land and mills near the Water of Leith from 1511 to 1621. Early references are variously to Stennop Milne (1576), Stanehope mylnes (1578), Stanehopps (1585), Stenhopmilne (1630) until, in 1773, the name Stenhouse Mill appears.The oldest building, now known as Stenhouse Mansion, lies to the south of the area. The house was probably originally built by the Stenhopes but it was substantially rebuilt and extended by Patrick Ellis, an Edinburgh burgess and merchant, in 1623 according to datestone over the main entrance with his initials and the Ellis heraldry as described by George Mackenzie. It was restored in 1965 and used as a centre for conservation of paintings and carved stones for Historic Scotland until 2009 and now is maintained by the National Trust for Scotland.Around five hundred houses were built at Stenhouse between 1930 and 1936 by the City Architect Ebenezer MacRae, mainly flatted blocks, but with a few tenements.From November 1953, 287 (4th Edinburgh) Squadron, of the Air Training Corps, was based at its drill hall in the extreme north-west of Stenhouse, next to the Edinburgh/Glasgow railway line. In 2008, the Squadron was forced to move to make way for the Edinburgh Trams line but it relocated to new premises on Stevenson Drive, adjacent to Saughton Enclosure, in 2010. In recognition of its connection with Stenhouse, the Squadron was renamed 287 (Stenhouse) Squadron in 2012.

Saughton () (Scots: Sauchtoun) (Scottish Gaelic: Baile nan Seileach) is a suburb of the west of Edinburgh, Scotland, bordering Broomhouse, Stenhouse, Longstone and Carrick Knowe. In Lowland Scots, a "sauch" is a willow. The Water of Leith flows by here. It is the location of HM Prison Edinburgh, known colloquially as "Saughton Prison", in the south of the district. The A71 road, one of the main city arteries, runs through the area – it is known here as Calder Road, becoming Stenhouse Road and Gorgie Road further east. Saughton Park, a large public park, has facilities including Scotland's largest skatepark; it is located on the opposite side of Stenhouse from the core of the Saughton neighbourhood. Actually situated in the Broomhouse area and fronting onto Broomhouse Drive, Saughton House is a large Government office, built in the 1950s, which houses the Scottish Government, Scottish Courts Service, and a number of other Government offices.

Kingsknowe railway station is a railway station serving Kingsknowe in the Scottish city of Edinburgh. It is located on the Shotts Line from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh Waverley via Shotts. The station has two platforms, connected by a level crossing, and CCTV. It is managed by ScotRail.

Kingsknowe (; Scottish Gaelic: Cnocan an Righ) is a suburb of Edinburgh the capital of Scotland. It is south-west of Craiglockhart, and borders Wester Hailes, Slateford and Longstone.

Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale Football Club (LTHV) are a senior non-league football club based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Currently competing in the East of Scotland League Premier Division, they play their home matches at Saughton Enclosure in the Saughton area of the city.

The Slateford Aqueduct is a navigable aqueduct that carries the Union Canal over the Water of Leith at Slateford, Edinburgh, Scotland. Completed in 1822, it has eight arches and spans a length of 500 feet (150 m).

Chesser ( CHEZ-ər) is a mainly residential suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland, east of the Water of Leith. It, with Longstone, is to the south-west, Allan Park and Craiglockhart to the south, Slateford, Hutchison and Moat to the east, and Gorgie Road to the north. The area is named after John William Chesser, who was elected Lord Provost of Edinburgh in 1919 and died in office in 1921. In his previous role as Convenor of Markets and Slaughterhouses he had organised the building of the new markets and slaughterhouses in the area.The Edinburgh Corn Exchange in Chesser is a venue for live events. There has been recent regeneration of predominantly early 20th-century housing stock, supplemented with modern development. Sporting and shopping facilities include an Asda supermarket. In 2016 the former fruit market in Chesser Avenue was redeveloped into a retail development as the Edinburgh West Retail Park.

The Edinburgh Corn Exchange is a conference, banqueting, wedding, sports and live music venue in the Chesser suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland. The maximum dinner capacity is 1,000 guests and for concerts 3,000 spectators.

Hailes Halt railway station was opened in 1908 as Hailes Platform railway station and was unadvertised private use for golfers. It became a public station in 1927 serving the area of Hailes that now forms part of the city of Edinburgh with Hailes House nearby.
