Western Michigan University (Western Michigan, Western or WMU) is a public research university in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States. It was initially established as Western State Normal School in 1903 by Governor Aaron T. Bliss for the training of teachers. It was renamed Western Michigan University in 1957. Western is one of the eight research universities in the state of Michigan and is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity". The university has seven degree-granting colleges, offering 147 undergraduate degree programs, 73 master's degree programs, 30 doctoral programs, and one specialist degree program. It is governed by an eight-member board of regents whose members are appointed by the governor of Michigan and confirmed by the Michigan Senate for eight-year terms. The university's athletic teams compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and are known as the Western Michigan Broncos. They compete in the Mid-American Conference for most sports.

University Arena is a multi-purpose arena on the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States. Located in Read Fieldhouse, the arena opened in 1957 and is home to multiple Western Michigan Broncos athletic teams, including men's and women's basketball, women's gymnastics, women's indoor track and field, and women's volleyball. The facility seats 5,421 people. Read Fieldhouse was named for Buck Read, WMU head men's basketball coach from 1922 to 1949.In 1994, University Arena went through a major renovation, adding 20,900 square feet (1,940 m2) to bring the total to 114,900 square feet (10,670 m2). The renovation included rotating the playing surface 90 degrees and reducing the seating capacity from over 10,000 to 5,421. Before the basketball team moved into Read Fieldhouse, WMU played at Oakland Gymnasium from the 1938–39 season through the 1956–57 season.In addition to hosting WMU basketball games, the arena also hosts high school basketball games between Kalamazoo Central and Kalamazoo Loy Norrix high schools twice a year as a neutral site.

James W. Miller Auditorium is a performance venue at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States. It opened on January 12, 1968, with a ceremony that included WMU's third president, James W. Miller, for whom the auditorium was later renamed. With a seating capacity of 3,497, Miller Auditorium is the fifth-largest auditorium in Michigan, after the Fox Theatre, Masonic Temple, Hill Auditorium and MSU Concert Auditorium.Miller Auditorium has three separate seating sections, the Orchestra level, the Grand Tier level and the Balcony level. Each seating level is divided into two seating areas: left and right. Miller Auditorium employs students from the University, some as part of Work Study. The performances are also staffed in large part by volunteers from the community known as the Usher Corps. Miller Auditorium is host to several kinds of performances. A Western Michigan University student organization known as the Campus Activities Board (CAB) brings in several performances each year, usually offering a discounted price for students. The CAB events run the gamut from Miller Movies (newer movies, generally costing $1 with student ID) to comedians and other speakers. The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra routinely plays shows throughout the year at Miller. Several Broadway shows come through Miller's doors every year, the likes of which have included: The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, My Fair Lady, Wicked and Beauty and the Beast. Miller has also hosted Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Corwin, Dave Chappelle, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood. Every year, Miller Auditorium is also host to the three Western Michigan University commencement ceremonies, in addition to hosting ceremonies for the local community college and various secondary schools in the area. The auditorium is available for rent by community groups.

James and Lois Richmond Center for Visual Arts is a visual arts center at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States. It was opened on March 9, 2007 and was dedicated on Thursday, April 12, 2007. Along with Kohrman Hall, the Richmond Center for Visual Arts houses the Frostic School of Art. The Richmond Center for Visual Arts is made up of three galleries on the first floor. It also includes two lecture halls, administration and advising offices, the WMU Design Center, a graphic design classroom and studio space, a small computer lab and a print center.

Kanley Track is a track and field complex located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is the outdoor home of the Western Michigan University track and field varsity squad and university clubs. At one time, Kanley Track had been a part of Waldo Stadium, before moving across the street to its current location. The area features a 400-meter Olympic-style 8-lane track, an alumni building that offers storage facilities and postings of team records, and permanent lights. Kanley Track was the site of the 1995 Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships, and continues as the host for a number of Kalamazoo area events and meets. As of 2006, Western Michigan University only offers women's varsity track and field. The men's program was discontinued in a 2004 university budget cut.

The John E. Fetzer Center is a conference center and special events facility at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. It was opened in 1983 and named for the radio pioneer and Detroit Tigers owner John Fetzer. The facility’s lounge and exhibition area features a display of Fetzer’s life and accomplishments.The Fetzer Center is a multi usage full service center with on-site catering and videoconferencing capabilities. Meeting rooms include the 250-seat Kirsch Auditorium and the 90-seat Putney Lecture Hall, as well as seven additional meeting rooms. The Fetzer Center also has a 280-person capacity banquet hall as well as an outdoor patio and deck that are also used for wedding ceremonies and receptions. The Fetzer Center is the location for several social engagements for Western Michigan University faculty, staff, and students. The Fetzer Center hosts an annual Champagne Brunch for graduates and their families and a holiday luncheon with Santa for faculty, staff and their families, and Kalamazoo-area residents. The facility is open to both University and non-University events.

WIDR (89.1 FM) is a freeform FM radio station that broadcasts from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. WIDR, a student-run radio station licensed to Western Michigan University, broadcasts with 100 watts of power. The station is entirely student-run, employing six to eight part-time staff members. Staff members must be students at Western Michigan University, enrolled at least part-time. Even though the station is student-run, a number of community volunteers hold on-air positions as well.

Ebert Field is a softball field located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States, and home to the Western Michigan University softball team. The field is named in honor of Fran Ebert, who started the WMU softball program in 1976. The stadium seats 400 fans in bleacher seating behind home plate and the first base side. The field underwent extensive renovations in 2000 and 2001. The renovations improved the dugouts, wind screens, bullpen and batting cage areas. A new scoreboard was also installed.

The Kalamazoo State Hospital Water Tower is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was built in 1895 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1972. It is located on the grounds of the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital.

Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field is a baseball stadium located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States, on the campus of Western Michigan University. It opened in 1939, and serves as the home field for the Western Michigan Broncos baseball program. The stadium hosted the inaugural College World Series in 1947 and again in 1948.

Oakland Drive Campus is a campus of Western Michigan University. It is the university's newest land acquisition. The campus, acquired in 1998, was originally state property used by the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital. The hospital is still leased to the state and remains in operation, although in a more limited role. Geographically, it is generally located between West Campus and East Campus, allowing for a natural accessibility. A focal point of the area is the Kalamazoo State Hospital Water Tower. Completed in 1895, this 175 feet (53 m) tall gothic-style construction can be seen from many areas on campus and in town. The newer Oakland Drive Campus buildings are located on Oakland Drive, north of the hospital and water tower.

The Henderson Park-West Main Hill Historic District is a primarily residential historic district roughly bounded by West Main, Thompson, Academy, Monroe, West Lovell and Valley Streets and Prairie Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
