Rockwell Field is a former United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) military airfield, located 1.1 miles (2 kilometres) northwest of the city of Coronado, California, on the northern part of the Coronado Peninsula across the bay from San Diego, California. This airfield played a fundamental role in the development of United States military aviation in the period before and during World War I. Originally it was The Curtiss School of Aviation, founded by Glenn Curtiss. In November 1912, the Army established a permanent flying school on the island. It served as a major flying school during World War I, and remained active as an Army Air Corps facility after the war. The facility was transferred to the United States Navy on 31 January 1939.Today, Rockwell Field forms the southeastern quadrant of what is today the Naval Air Station, North Island (NAS North Island). The facility was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1991.

Naval Air Station North Island or NAS North Island (IATA: NZY, ICAO: KNZY, FAA LID: NZY), at the north end of the Coronado peninsula on San Diego Bay in San Diego, California, is part of the largest aerospace-industrial complex in the United States Navy – Naval Base Coronado (NBC), and the home port of several aircraft carriers of the United States Navy. The commanding officer of NAS North Island (NASNI) is also the Commanding Officer, Naval Base Coronado (NBC). As such, he or she commands or administers NASNI and seven other naval facilities: Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (NABC); Outlying Field Imperial Beach; Silver Strand Training Complex; Remote Training Site, Warner Springs; Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor; Camp Morena; and Naval Auxiliary Landing Facility San Clemente Island. NBC, with only its commands in the metropolitan San Diego area, brackets the city of Coronado from the entrance to San Diego Bay to the Mexican border. NAS North Island itself is host to 23 aviation squadrons and 80 additional tenant commands and activities—one of which, the Fleet Readiness Center Southwest, is San Diego's largest aerospace employer.

Naval Base Coronado (NBC) is a consolidated Navy installation encompassing eight military facilities stretching from San Clemente Island, located seventy miles west of San Diego, California, in Los Angeles County, California, to the Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor and Camp Morena, located sixty miles east of San Diego.

Rancho San Diego Island (also called "Peninsula of San Diego") was a 4,185-acre (16.94 km2) Mexican land grant in present day San Diego County, California given in 1846 by Governor Pío Pico to Pedro C. Carrillo. The grant consisted of the strip of land lying between the San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, which was initially referred to as the Island or Peninsula of San Diego, and which included present day Coronado and North Island.

Coronado High School (CHS) is a public high school in Coronado, California. It is the only high school in the Coronado Unified School District. The California Department of Education gave it a California Distinguished School award in 2011 and two Model Continuation High School awards in 2014 and 2018.The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) is located on the campus of CHS.

Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) is a school-within-a-school located on the campus of Coronado High School in Coronado, California. The school currently enrolls 155 students, of which nearly 70% comes from outside Coronado.CoSA is largely an after-hours program with a focus on the arts, in which students take academic courses at Coronado High School in the morning. The school offers classes in classical and contemporary dance, musical theater and drama, instrumental music, technical theater, visual art, and digital media and filmmaking. It has Ph.D.s on its faculty and what the San Diego Union Tribune calls "a formidable fund-raising auxiliary", the CoSA Foundation.

Rebecca Mawii Zahau (March 15, 1979 – July 13, 2011), also known as Rebecca Nalepa, was a Burmese American woman who was found hanging at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado, California, United States, on July 13, 2011, and pronounced dead by first responders called to the residence. Her death occurred two days after 6-year-old Max Shacknai, the son of her boyfriend Jonah Shacknai, had fallen from the staircase of the mansion and was in critical condition in a hospital. Rebecca and her younger sister, Xena, were the only known people present at the time of Max's fall. Subsequently on July 16, 2011, Max Shacknai died of his injuries.San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore announced on September 2, 2011, that Zahau's death was a suicide while the younger Shacknai's death had been ruled an accident, and that neither was the result of foul play. Members of Zahau's family disputed this finding and filed a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against Jonah Shacknai's brother Adam. The jury in that civil trial found Adam Shacknai responsible for Zahau's death and granted her family a $5 million judgment for loss of love and companionship as well as an additional $167,000 for the loss of financial support Zahau would have provided her mother and siblings.In February 2019, Adam Shacknai appealed the judgment with the defense arguing procedural errors and juror misconduct. Prior to final arguments being presented to the judge, Shacknai's insurance company and the Zahau family reached a settlement of $600,000 resulting in the civil case being dismissed with prejudice, and vacating the original $5 million judgment.

Shelter Island is a neighborhood of Point Loma in San Diego, California. It is actually not an island but is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. It was originally a sandbank in San Diego Bay, visible only at low tide. It was built up into dry land using material dredged from the bay in 1934. It was developed in the 1950s and contains hotels, restaurants, marinas, and public parkland. Shelter Island is owned and controlled by the Port of San Diego, which also provides all police and other public services. Shelter Island businesses lease their location from the Port. Under California law, property on Shelter Island cannot be sold and permanent residences cannot be built there, because the area falls under the law governing public tidelands.The "island" is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) long and only a few hundred feet wide. A single street, Shelter Island Drive, runs the length of Shelter Island and also connects it to the mainland via a causeway lined with marine-related businesses.

Harbor Island is a man-made peninsula created in 1961 from harbor dredgings, located in San Diego Bay, San Diego, California. It lies between Shelter Island and Downtown San Diego, and is directly across Harbor Drive from San Diego Airport. It is 2 miles (3.2 km) long and only a few hundred feet wide. A single road, Harbor Island Drive, runs from one end of Harbor Island to the other and connects it to the mainland. The "island" includes several marinas which harbor thousands of small boats, as well as several restaurants, two high-rise hotels, and Harbor Island Drive Park. It is under the control of the Port of San Diego, which owns all the land and provides municipal services such as police, road maintenance, etc. Harbor Island businesses lease their location from the Port. Under California law, property on Harbor Island cannot be sold and permanent residences cannot be built there, because the area falls under the law governing public tidelands.

Heilman Villas are located at the corner of Seventh Street and Orange Avenue in Coronado, California and consist of 10 standalone bungalows and one 2-story duplex. The duplex and 6 of the bungalows face a central courtyard which faces Orange Ave. The other 4 bungalows face 7th St.Heilman Villas was built for Robert and Lillian Heilman. Later the complex was known as DeCoby Court and Hollander Court. In 1952, it became the Coromar Motel. In 1973, the City of Coronado bought the site; it was used by community groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Coronado Historical Association (CHA). The City renamed the complex again, this time to Babcock Court, in honor of City of Coronado founder Elisha S. Babcock. Heilman Villas was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 reg. #92000319 as examples of 1920s bungalow court architecture in the Mission Revival style. The interiors contain Craftsman elements with hardwood floors and leaded glass.The Coronado Police Department is now located on the former site of the Heilman Villas.

The Real World: San Diego is the fourteenth season of MTV's reality television series The Real World, which focuses on a group of diverse strangers living together for several months in a different city each season, as cameras follow their lives and interpersonal relationships. It is the fourth season of The Real World to be filmed in the Pacific States region of the United States, specifically in California after The Real World: San Francisco. The season featured a total of eight cast members over the course of the season, as one Frankie was replaced after she voluntarily left the show. The season was filmed from August 16 to December 14, 2003. The season premiered on January 6, 2004, and consisted of 26 episodes. This was the first of two seasons to be filmed in San Diego, the second being the twenty-sixth season. The premiere was watched by approximately 4 million viewers.

Spanish Landing is a historical site at Spanish Landing Park in San Diego, California at San Diego Bay. The Spanish Landing site is a California Historical Landmark No. 891 listed on February 20, 1976. It is the site of the landing by Spanish Portolá expedition with leaders Gaspar de Portolá and Father Junípero Serra. The Spanish ships San Antonio and San Carlos (ship) landed ship's boats at the site in 1769, looking fresh water on the San Diego River, on their San Diego expedition. San Antonio arrived in San Diego Bay on April 11, 1769, and the San Carlos on April 29. They came ashore on May 1, 1769, and set up a base camp on May 14. On July 1 the ships' party met up with the party that had marched inland from Baja California. The Spanish landing started the founding of Alta California for the Spanish Empire. Some of the ships' crew were very sick from the trip to San Diego and Father Serra and Father Vila, remained in San Diego. TA historical marker was placed in Spanish Landing Park in San Diego. The marker was placed there in 1976 by State Department of Parks and Recreation working with the San Diego Unified Port District and Squibob Chapter, E Clampus Vitus.
