R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital is a government owned medical college and hospital in Shyambazar, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1886 to ensure self-sufficiency (Swaraj) in medical education and services in the colonial era. It was under University of Calcutta from 1916 to 2003 and affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences when it was established in 2003. R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital completed 100 years of its service in 2016. This college is a co-educational institution that is recognized by the MCI and affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

On 9 August 2024, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, was raped and murdered in a college building. Her body was found in a seminar room on campus. On 10 August 2024, a 33-year-old male civic volunteer, named Sanjoy Roy working for Kolkata Police was arrested under suspicion of committing the crime. Three days later, the Calcutta High Court, transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stating that the Kolkata Police's investigation did not inspire confidence. The junior doctors in West Bengal undertook a strike action for 42 days demanding a thorough probe of the incident and adequate security at hospitals. The incident amplified debate about the safety of women and doctors in India, and has sparked significant outrage, and nationwide and international protests.

The Tala tank, also spelled Tallah tank (Bengali pronunciation: [ˈʈala tæŋk]), is a water tower in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Construction started in 1909 and it was inaugurated in May 1911 by Edward Norman Baker, the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. The tank, which is owned by Kolkata Municipal Corporation, is fed by Palta Water Works near Barrackpore. More than 110 years after construction, the tower remains the major water supplier to the city of Kolkata. The water tower, which is claimed to be the world's largest overhead water reservoir, covers 3–4 acres (12,000–16,000 m2), has a capacity of 9.9 million imperial gallons (45,000 cubic metres), stands 110 ft (34 m) off the ground and weighs 44 thousand tonnes – including water – at maximum capacity. The tank has four individually isolated chambers and a single pipeline for source from Palta and supply to the city. The steel was imported from the United Kingdom and is of similar quality to that which was used to build the RMS Titanic. It has survived multiple calamities including the 1934 Nepal–India earthquake, World War II Imperial Japanese aerial bombings from 1942 to 1944 and Cyclone Amphan in 2020.

Tala Setu is a bridge on the Kolkata Circular railway in the state of West Bengal. It connects the Shyambazar area of Kolkata with the Kolkata's northern suburbs. The bridge was opened in 1962, but due to structural weakness of the bridge, demolition work was started by Indian Railways from February 2020. The demolition work was completed by April 2020. The new bridge was opened on 22 September 2022. The total length of the new bridge is 743.43 meters. A total of 468 crore was spent to build the bridge. The bridge was built on a government initiative under the Department of Public Works.

The organisation has been registered since March 1940 in Calcutta, British India under the supervision of the then Acharya Srila Acharyadev (25 Aug 1895 — 8 March 1958) alias Srimad Bhakti Prasad Puri Goswami Maharaj after accepting sannyasa in 1939/1941.
