East Cowes

East Cowes Town Hall is a municipal building in York Avenue, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, England. The structure, which is the meeting place of East Cowes Town Council, is a locally listed building.

St James's Church, East Cowes is the Church of England parish church of East Cowes, Isle of Wight.

The Frank James Hospital is a currently closed hospital in Adelaide Grove, East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. It was sold by the NHS Trust in 2002 and since then, it has had ownership issues, which has led to its vandalism and disrepair. The building is currently on the endangered buildings list for the United Kingdom. It has a central block with two projecting wings and a verandah to the ground floor on all sides. It is built of red brick, with a tiled roof and has been Grade II listed since 1979.The building was constructed in 1893, as a home for retired seamen and was originally called the Frank James Memorial Home. It was commissioned by William and Arthur James as a memorial to their brother, Frank Linsly James, eldest son of the New York entrepreneur Daniel James and his wife Sophia, who ran the British arm of their company Phelps Dodge from Liverpool. The building was designed in a Dutch Style by Somers Clarke. In 1903, the home was transformed into a cottage hospital, with its running costs paid for by charitable donations. It was eventually absorbed into the National Health Service in 1948, before finally closing in 2002. Between then and now, it has been laying empty and gradually deteriorating. In March 2012, an action group was formed called the "Friends of Frank James", with the aim of saving and preserving the Frank James Hospital for future generations. They have had the support of Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner. The group's aim is to push for action, to prevent the building being lost forever.

The Isle of Wight Studio School was a Studio school which opened in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 2014. It was on the site of the former East Cowes Primary School. It was a sister school to the Southampton Studio School, which was first renamed Inspire Enterprise Academy and then closed in 2015. It was part of the Studio Schools Trust. The school catered for 14-19 year-olds. There were a maximum of 75 children in each year.The school's sixth-form closed in 2018 because not enough students applied. The rest of the school closed in 2019, again because of the low number of students.The school's first and only Ofsted inspection was in May 2018, with a judgement of Requires Improvement.

The Wight Shipyard is a shipbuilding company and shipyard based in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight in the UK, with their facilities occupying and including the historic Saunders-Roe flying boat hangar and British Hovercraft Corporation hangar. The company was originally known as Shemara Refit LLP, and was formed to undertake the refit of the historic MY Shemara. They now specialise in the construction and refit of high speed craft and aluminium ships.

The Classic Boat Museum is a museum of boats and of the history of yachting and boating. It is located on the Isle of Wight at two separate sites on either side of the River Medina; The Boat Collection in Cowes, and The Gallery in East Cowes. It is a working museum featuring restoration. Work takes place all year round. In addition to classic boats, the museum contains tools, artefacts, books, photographs, film and archival items that relate to the history of boat building, sailing, yachting, cruising and racing over the last century.

The Cowes Floating Bridge is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the River Medina on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. The ferry crosses the tidal river from East Cowes to Cowes. The first floating bridge between the two towns was established in 1859 and the crossing is one of the few remaining that has not been replaced by a physical bridge. The service is owned and operated by the Isle of Wight Council, which has run it since 1901. Prior to ownership by the local authority the service was run by The Floating Bridge Company and The Steam Packet Company (Red Funnel). The ferry currently used is named No. 6, the sixth to be owned by the Isle of Wight Council, and ninth in total. It was built in 2017 and can carry up to 20 cars. The Cowes floating bridge remains the only way to cross the River Medina between the towns without taking a ten-mile trip via Newport. The current vessel was installed on 14 May 2017, but after a string of technical issues the service was suspended by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and a passenger-only replacement service provided by a small launch. After several months of service suspension and intermittent operation, full service finally resumed early in 2018.

East Cowes Castle, located in East Cowes, was the home of architect John Nash between its completion and his death in 1835. Nash himself was the designer of the site, and began construction as early as 1798. It was completed in 1800 and was said to have been built at unlimited expense. Nash was finally interred in the grounds. The structure gained renown for its complex castellation, its gothic-style turrets and towers, which were built in the style of the period of Edward VI, and for the notable individuals who came to be Nash's guests there, including the Prince Regent, who went on to become King George IV and J. M. W. Turner, who painted a picture of the location. On Nash's death, the estate was sold to the Earl of Shannon who added a lodge at the south of the estate. It was then briefly held by the politician, George Tudor, before being acquired by the Viscount Gort family, who held it until 1934. The castle was requisitioned by the War Office during the Second World War, under whose use the condition of the building suffered greatly; and due to subsequent neglect and deterioration, the castle was finally demolished in 1963. The castle's gatehouse, North Lodge and an original icehouse survive and the castle's clock remains on display at the Carisbrooke Castle Museum. Over the next thirty years, housing developments were built over the estate. The estate used to cover the area now bordered by Old Road, New Barn Road, York Avenue and Castle Street.Although East Cowes Castle no longer exists, there is an exact copy of the original castle called Lough Cooter Castle, near Gort, County Galway. Mill Hill railway station is a disused station in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

Cowes power station (or Kingston power station) is a 140MW Open Cycle Gas Turbine station powered by two 70MW units. The station is the Isle of Wight's only conventional power generation source other than power from the mainland. The station was built in 1982 at a cost of £30 million. The station is owned and operated by RWE Generation UK.Both units run on light fuel oil and operate at either peak time or when the grid requires frequency response. The station is either run locally or by remote from the Hythe Dispatch Desk, located at Hythe Power Station. The gas turbine engines have a total output of 200,000 horsepower and use 762 litres (201 US gal) of fuel oil per minute when running at maximum output.There was a 24 MW coal-fired power station at Cowes that was decommissioned on 15 March 1976.In addition to electricity generated on the Isle of Wight, power is transmitted from the mainland through subsea cables. The first connection was in 1947 by a 33 kV cable from Nursling near Southampton to Cowes. A second cable was installed in 1964, this was the first 132 kV oil-filled cable in Britain, and was constructed by AEI. A new 132 kV link was commissioned in July 1972, this was the first major cable contract undertaken by the Southern Electricity Board.

The Cowes Maritime Museum is a local maritime museum in Cowes, Isle of Wight, southern England.The museum is co-located within Cowes Library. It was started by library staff in the 1970s. It has a small exhibition area that displays model boats from its collection. The museum also has a photographic and paper archive covering yachting and the shipbuilding industry at Cowes. The museum is in Beckford Road in central Cowes and is free of charge.

St Faith's Church, Cowes is a parish church in the Church of England located in Cowes, Isle of Wight. In October 2013, the Diocese of Portsmouth revealed plans to close the church and merge the parish into a team ministry with other nearby churches. The parish now (as of 2021) forms part of the parish of All Saints, Gurnard, with St Faith, Cowes. The priest-in-charge of the adjacent parish of Northwood is as of 2021 also the priest-in-charge of All Saints with St Faith, and Church of England services are no longer held at the church.
