Preston includes the subdivisions of East Preston, North Preston, Lake Major, Cherry Brook and Loon Lake. The definition sometimes extends to include Lake Echo. The population in 2016 was 3,223. This is a decline from 2006, when Preston had a population of 3,536.

Cole Harbour is the name for a natural harbour located in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is located in central Halifax County, with the mouth of the harbour located 6 kilometres northeast of Halifax Harbour. The entrance to Cole Harbour is protected by Rainbow Haven Beach, a barrier beach which forms a lagoon on the inland side. Measuring approximately 4 kilometres east to west and 3 kilometres north to south, the harbour is shallow and rocky. Virtually the entire shoreline and the harbour itself are protected by the provincial government as the Cole Harbour - Lawrencetown Coastal Heritage Provincial Park. The centre of the harbour is divided by a man-made feature; during the late 19th century a railway was constructed from Dartmouth to Musquodoboit Harbour and crossed the width of Cole Harbour on a 3 kilometre causeway. Rail service was abandoned by CN Rail during the 1980s and the corridor has been converted to a rail trail as part of the Trans Canada Trail. Part of the western shore of Cole Harbour was dyked during the 19th century to provide land for farmers. These structures were destroyed in the early 20th century and are now occupied by several residential homes along the Cow Bay road.

The Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia is located in Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia, in the Halifax Regional Municipality. The centre is a museum and a library resource centre that focuses on the history and culture of African Nova Scotians. The organization of the Black Cultural Society was incorporated as a charitable organization in 1977 and the centre opened its doors in 1983, with a goal to educate and inspire and to protect, preserve and promote Black culture in Nova Scotia. The centre is located on Trunk 7 at 1149 Main Street. The centre holds many events on a weekly basis and is open to the public. The centre also has a permanent display about the former community of Africville.

North Preston is a community located in Nova Scotia, Canada within the Halifax Regional Municipality.The community is populated primarily by Black Nova Scotians. North Preston is the largest Black community in Nova Scotia by population, and has the highest concentration of African Canadians of any community in Canada.

Preston & Cherrybrook is a community and planning area of the Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada. It includes the villages of Preston, East Preston, North Preston, and Cherry Brook. The area was settled by African Nova Scotians following the American Revolutionary War.
