History of the University of Scranton

The University of Scranton is a private Jesuit university in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1888 by William O'Hara, the first Bishop of Scranton, as St. Thomas College. In 1938, the college was elevated to university status and took the name The University of Scranton. The institution was operated by the Diocese of Scranton from its founding until 1897. While the Diocese of Scranton retained ownership of the university, it was administered by the Lasallian Christian Brothers from 1888 to 1942. In 1942, the Society of Jesus took ownership and control of the university. During the 1960s, the university became an independent institution under a lay board of trustees. The university is composed of three colleges that each contain both undergraduate and graduate programs. It offers 65 bachelor's degrees, 29 master's degrees, and 4 doctoral programs.The university enrolls approximately 6,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Most of its students are from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. In 2016, about 58% of its undergraduate students were women and 42% men. In its graduate programs, about 62% are women students and 38% men. The university has about 300 full-time faculty members, approximately 200 of which are tenured.

The Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel, which was built as the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Station, is a French Renaissance-style building in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Farley's Eatery & Pub was a restaurant in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States, and was considered a staple of Scrantonian culinary culture. Farley's promoted itself as having "the best steak and seafood in downtown Scranton." Farley's Eatery & Pub closed in 2012 after 30 years of business. At the time it closed, it was described as one of the oldest businesses in downtown Scranton.In recent times, it garnered fame from being mentioned on television series The Office. The series, set in Scranton, made reference to the restaurant in a 2005 episode in which it was suggested that the losers of an office warehouse basketball game would buy the winners dinner from the pub. Actor Steve Carell, who portrays Michael Scott in the NBC sitcom, said in the DVD commentary that he would personally fly to Scranton to "cut the ribbon" if Farley's were to place a "Michael Scott Burger" on their menu. The burger was later added.

The First Church of Christ, Scientist is located in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania located at 520 Vine Street. Built in 1915, the building is known for its Classical Revival architecture. Despite its origin as a church, today it is the Lackawanna County Children's Library.

The James Madison School, also known as the East Scranton Intermediate School and East Scranton Junior High School, is an historic American school building that is located in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

The Ad-Lin Building, also known as Linden Plaza, is an historic, American commercial building that is located in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Albright Memorial Library, also commonly referred to as the Scranton Public Library, is a historic public library located in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The library is located on the corner of Vine Street and Washington Avenue. Since the library opened in May of 1893, it has served the city of Scranton and the surrounding areas by providing access to books, DVDs, computer services, and more.

Lackawanna College (Lackawanna or LC) is a private college in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It also has satellite centers in Hazleton, Hawley, Sunbury, Towanda, and Tunkhannock, and an Environmental Education Center in Covington Township.

The Scranton Iron Furnaces is an historic, American manufacturing site that preserves the heritage of iron making in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. It is located in Scranton, near the Steamtown National Historic Site. The site has been managed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission since 1971 and is part of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum complex. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, as the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company Furnace.

The Finch Building is located on Wyoming Avenue, just north of US 11 and PA 307, in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a stone building designed by William Scott-Collins in the Renaissance revival style and completed in 1899. It takes its name from the Finch Manufacturing Company, a maker of finished steel products such as manhole covers that had been based in the city for much of the later 19th century. Its first occupant was the International Correspondence School, a business that offered study-by-mail classes to the many coal miners in the Northeastern Pennsylvania region. The school, founded in 1894, had quickly outgrown its offices at the nearby Coal Exchange Building and needed the space. Later it was used as offices for the Hudson Coal Company.In 1976 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today it has been remodeled into an apartment building called Finch Towers.

Century Club of Scranton is a historic women's club located at Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1913-1914, and is a three-story, rectangular, brick, limestone and wood building in the Colonial Revival-style. It measures 56 feet, 6 inches, by 92 feet, 4 inches, and has a flat roof and three bay symmetrical facade. It features an entry portico supported by groupings of three Doric order columns at the two front corners.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Scranton City Hall is located at Washington and Mulberry (US 11/PA 307) streets in the downtown section of that city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is a three-story limestone ashlar Victorian Gothic Revival building with sandstone trim, designed by architects Edwin L. Walter and Frederick Lord Brown and built in 1888.The main building, on Washington Street, houses the offices of city's mayor and other executive officers — city clerk, comptroller and police chief - and those who work under their immediate supervision. A bridge from the second story connects it to the fire department headquarters, facing Mulberry Street, built at the same time by the same architects in the same style. Since the two form a larger complex, they were listed together when the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as Municipal Building and Central Fire Station, 340.
