Nicholson Island (Lake Ontario)

Scotch Bonnet Island is a small island in Lake Ontario. It is part of Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. The island is a low, bare, limestone outcropping, approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) off the western shore of the Quinte peninsula. It is named after Scotch Bonnet Ridge, a nearby glacial feature, a north–south belt of glacio-lacustrine clay and till. The possibility of operating a lighthouse on the island was explored as early as 1844. Funds were found to construct a lighthouse after the ship Christiana was wrecked on the island in 1851. A traditional stone lighthouse was first erected on the island in 1856. It was replaced with a steel navigation tower in 1959. Ownership of the island was transferred to the Canadian Wildlife Service in 1979, after the Department of Transport declared it surplus. Later that year it was named the Scotch Bonnet Island National Wildlife Area. Like other similar islands, the island is an important resting spot for birds migrating across the lake. During breeding season large numbers of waterbirds, like herring gulls and double-crested cormorants, raise their young on the island.

Hillier is a community located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Established in 1823, it was named after Major George Hillier (d. 1840), British Army officer and military secretary to Sir Peregrine Maitland from 1818 to 1828. It is located on the Loyalist Parkway or Highway 33 and is roughly 30 minutes from Belleville, Ontario. Hillier's population is roughly 100 people. The town hall, which is at the centre of the hamlet, was once a school and has been marked as a national historical site. Hillier is ward 7 of the 10 wards in Prince Edward County. The ward consists of several communities including Consecon, Melville, Rosehall and Hillier. Hillier is well known in its area for its many wineries, as well as its Hillier in the Park Day, which takes place in August and regularly draws in hundreds of families from the Prince Edward County area. CJBQ is a Canadian radio station licensed at Belleville, Ontario. It is owned by Quinte Broadcasting along with CIGL-FM and CJTN-FM. CJBQ broadcasts at 800 kHz at a power of 10 kW. The transmitter is located in Prince Edward County. The antenna is a six-tower array with differing patterns day and night, to protect Class-A clear-channel station XEROK-AM in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, as well as other Canadian and U.S. stations on the same frequency. Since the late 2000s, CJBQ is the only remaining Canadian AM radio station operating between Ottawa and the Greater Toronto Area.CJBQ's format includes country, oldies and adult contemporary. It is mostly locally programmed, with the exception of John Tesh's syndicated program that airs during evenings. CJBQ also carries live broadcasts of Belleville Senators hockey games.

Wellers Bay is a small bay on Lake Ontario, on the west side of Prince Edward County. In 1861 the Government of the Province of Canada considered making it a "harbour of refuge", and installing a lighthouse. During World War II the beach was part of the Consecon Air Weapons Range and was used as a firing range, for pilot-trainees.In 1978 the Weller's Bay National Wildlife Area was created. Subsequently, locals used to using the area for fishing, snowmobiling, and other recreational uses started clashing with officials charged with a responsibility to protect wildlife. In the 1990s officials started issuing fines. Municipal politicians tried negotiating a relaxation of the rules, without success. On May 27, 2011, the Canadian Wildlife Service announced the bay's beaches would be off limits.A key 83 hectares (210 acres) of the 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) bay are set aside as a National Wildlife Area, including Bald Island, Bald Head Island, Fox Island, and the sandspit that protects the bay, because the sandspit that protected the bay was one of the last undeveloped spits on the great lakes, and it was an important bird habitat. Public access is prohibited at Wellers Bay National Wildlife Area.

Carrying Place is a community straddling the Quinte West and Prince Edward County border that serves as a gateway to Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. Situated northwest of Picton and just south of Trenton, it was named for its location on the portage between the Bay of Quinte and Weller's Bay on Lake Ontario. The Loyalist Parkway passes through the community. Carrying Place is home to the Department of National Defence's LPH-89 antenna farm attached to CFB Trenton and located along Loyalist Parkway south of Twelve O'clock Point.

The Murray Canal is a canal in the municipalities of Quinte West and Brighton, Ontario, Canada, and runs from the western end of the Bay of Quinte to Presqu'ile Bay on Lake Ontario. It is approximately 8 kilometres (5 mi) in length and has a maximum depth of 9 feet (2.7 m). The canal shortens the trip for boats wishing to access Lake Ontario from the central and western Bay of Quinte by avoiding having to go around the whole peninsula of Prince Edward County. The canal was proposed as early as 1796 and land was set aside by the government of Upper Canada. However, the Welland Canal and the Rideau Canal were seen as more important and construction was delayed. Construction was begun in 1882 and because of problems with unstable banks it took until 1889 to complete the canal. The canal is crossed by two swing bridges (Ontario Highway 33 and County Rd 64). An unused railway bridge is kept permanently open but the former CN Rail tracks have since been removed with the creation of the Millennium Trail. A swing bridge at Hutchison Road has been removed with only the bridge footings remaining. The canal saw many years of use with coal and other commercial boats, but after the St. Lawrence Seaway opened in 1959, the traffic declined. Since then there has been a steady rise in recreational use and today the Murray Canal is used by boaters who visit the Trent–Severn Waterway.

Wellington is an unincorporated place and community in Prince Edward County in eastern Ontario, Canada. It has a population of 1,932 according to the 2016 Census. The community is located on the shore of both Lake Ontario and West Lake in the southwest of the county. Sandbanks Beach, the northernmost of Sandbanks Provincial Park's beaches, is located in the Village of Wellington, where it is called Wellington Rotary Beach. It is separated from the Sandbanks Provincial Park by a canal through the beach to Wellington Harbour.

Tara Hall is a Georgian manor house in the village of Wellington, in Prince Edward County in Ontario, Canada. It was built by merchant and postmaster Archibald McFaul between 1837 and November, 1839. McFaul named the house "Tara Hall" after the ancient Irish legend of Tara's Banquet Hall at the Hill of Tara The Hall is a well-preserved example of Regency-era Georgian architecture in the United Empire Loyalist style. unique to the region. It is listed on the register of historic buildings of Prince Edward County and is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act of the Province of Ontario and has been described as “an outstanding achievement in its day”

The Trent River is a river in southeastern Ontario which flows from Rice Lake to empty into the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario. This river is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway which leads to Georgian Bay. The river is 90 kilometres (56 mi) long. The Trent drains a large portion of south-central Ontario, including most of the Kawartha Lakes and their supplying watersheds. The river is host to numerous species of birds, amphibians and fish. Some species of fish in the river include: Smallmouth bass, Largemouth bass, Pike, Walleye, Freshwater drums, Crappie as well as other smaller fish such as Sunfish, Rock Bass and Bluegill. Located in traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabek, Trent River's name in Ojibwe is both "zaagidawijiwanaang", and "Saugechewigewonk", meaning "Strong Rapids Waters".Tributaries of this river include the Crowe River and the Otonabee River, which runs through the city of Peterborough, Ontario. Trent University, located in Peterborough, is named after the region, and looked to provide university education to the area. In 2008 water soldier plant was reported found along the shore line. The plant is imported from Europe. It is a common pond plant, purchased in garden stores. It has sharp leaves and is a possible concern as the plant spreads quickly using asexual reproduction.

Ameliasburgh is an historic township in southern Ontario, Canada, one of the three original townships that formed Prince Edward County. The other two townships were Marysburgh and Sophiasburgh. Originally known as Seventh Town, it was renamed in 1787 after Princess Amelia, the youngest child of George III. The township was amalgamated into the Corporation of the County of Prince Edward, a single tier municipality, on January 1, 1998. The community of Ameliasburg, Ontario was named after the township.

Ameliasburgh is a village in the Township of Ameliasburgh in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. The village of Ameliasburgh was sometimes known as "Roblin's Mills" after one of its early settlers and the mill he built; the shallow lake to the south of the village is known as Roblin Lake. One of the first townships surveyed in Ontario, Ameliasburgh Township, bordered on the north by the south shore of the Bay of Quinte, was known as "Seventh Town" in the early days of settlement. Much later, the poet Al Purdy lived in a cottage on Roblin Lake for many years. Several of Purdy's poems, most famously including "Wilderness Gothic", mention features in and around Ameliasburgh. The church whose spire "Wilderness Gothic" has been "sheathed in new metal" is now part of the Ameliasburgh Museum. The Ameliasburgh library, which has a collection of Purdy memorabilia on display, is named after Purdy, as is the road leading from the town to the Roblin millpond. The Roblin Mill has been relocated to Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto. Started in 1855, the Ameliasburgh Fall Fair is an agricultural fair held by the community every September, featuring a horse & pony show, baking and garden produce contests, livestock competition and arts & crafts. It was held regularly at the Roblin Fairground in the 1900s but eventually ceased to operate before being re-introduced, at the same location, in 1982.

The Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial is a war memorial in Trenton, Ontario, Canada to memorialize Canadian Forces casualties in Afghanistan. The memorial was funded by a public fundraiser announced in July, 2011, and opened November 11, 2012.
