Wold Newton Hoard

The Wold Cottage meteorite (also called the Wold Newton meteorite) fell near Wold Cottage farm in 1795, a few miles away from the village of Wold Newton in Yorkshire, England.

Wold Newton is a small Yorkshire Wolds village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 9 miles (14 km) south of Scarborough and 9 miles (14 km) north-west of Bridlington. Wold Newton is located within the Great Wold Valley and the course of the Gypsey Race, a winterbourne chalk stream, passes through the south of the village. The village of Fordon is also part of the civil parish of Wold Newton. According to the 2011 UK census, Wold Newton parish had a population of 337, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 291. The parish church of All Saints is a Grade II* listed building. There are a further eight Grade II listed buildings including Wold Newton Hall, the former Wesleyan Chapel (now Wold Newton Community Centre), The Old Vicarage, the Anvil Arms Public House and the Red telephone box on Wold Newton Green. Approximately two thirds of the village falls within the Wold Newton Conservation area.Wold Newton has a small, fully automated telephone exchange. Rather confusingly, this is referred to as the "Thwing Exchange". (Thwing is a neighbouring village). Wold Newton Cricket Club have a ground off Laking Lane and field a first and second team. The children's author Christina Butler lived for many years in the western section of Wold Newton Hall. Between 1988 and 2005 she wrote thirteen books including Stanley in the Dark and Archie the Ugly Dinosaur.

Foxholes is a village in North Yorkshire, England, part of the civil parish of Foxholes with Butterwick. It lies where the B1249 road crosses the Great Wold Valley, 9 miles (14.5 km) south from Scarborough, 11 miles (17.7 km) north-west from Bridlington, and 7 miles (11.3 km) north-east from Sledmere. The course of the winterbourne stream the Gypsey Race passes to the south of the village. Until 1974, the village lay in the historic county boundaries of the East Riding of Yorkshire. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Ryedale district. Foxholes Grade II listed Anglican church is dedicated to St Mary, and is an 1866 limestone and sandstone construction by George Fowler Jones Pevsner describes this neo-Norman church as: "one of the ugliest in the Riding... The north pier's are grotesque, with their undersized shafts on their over-high bases and their big square foliage capitals... Font: obstrusively Norman". He also notes several windows by Capronnier, and a 1720 cup by William Gamble.

Thwing is a village and civil parish in the Yorkshire Wolds, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England.

The Great Wold Valley is the largest and broadest of the valleys cutting into the Yorkshire Wolds in northern England. It carries the Gypsey Race, an intermittent stream, which runs from its source near Wharram-le-Street eastwards along and through the northern Yorkshire Wolds to reach the sea at Bridlington. It is known that the Great Wold Valley was an important place of worship during Neolithic times and there are a number of scheduled monuments in the valley. There are two dramatic right angle bends in the course of the Gypsey Race, one turning to the south at Burton Fleming then another turning eastwards again at Rudston. This intermittent and irregular watercourse is believed to be affected by a siphoning action in underground reservoirs and can come into flood apparently regardless of recent rainfall in the local vicinity. This seemingly 'magical' property is thought to be responsible for the number of significant Neolithic sites along its course, including the Rudston Monolith and the ancient burial mounds at Willy Howe, Duggleby Howe and Wold Newton. Howe, in this case a topographic name from Middle English, originated with the Old Norse word haugr meaning a small hill or a man-made mound or barrow.

Fordon is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Wold Newton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, near the border with North Yorkshire. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) south of Scarborough and 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Bridlington. In 1931 the parish had a population of 29.There is a small church dedicated to St James that is now a Grade II* listed building. The name Fordon, first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Fordun, Fordune, and Forduna, is thought to come from the Old English words fore ('in front of') and dūn ('hill'). Thus it once meant 'In front of the hill'.In 1823 Fordon was in the parish of Hunmanby and the Wapentake of Dickering. Occupations at the time included three farmers.Fordon was formerly a township in the parish of Hunmanby, from 1866 Fordon was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Wold Newton.

Langtoft is a small village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated 6 miles (10 km) north of Driffield town centre, and on the B1249 road between Driffield and Foxholes. According to the 2011 UK census, Langtoft parish had a population of 492, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 457.

Dickering was a wapentake (which is an administrative division) of the historic East Riding of Yorkshire in England, consisting of the north-east part of that county, including the towns of Bridlington and Filey; its territory is now partly in the modern East Riding and partly in North Yorkshire. It was established in 12th or 13th century by combining the three ancient Domesday hundreds of Burton, Huntou (Hunthow) and Torbar. The Wapentake of Dickering ceased to have much significance in the 19th century when the wapentakes were superseded by other administrative divisions for most local government purposes. Dickering consisted of the parishes of Argam, Bempton, Bessingby, Boynton, Bridlington, Burton Agnes, Burton Fleming, Carnaby, Flamborough, Folkton, Foston on the Wolds, Foxholes, Ganton, Garton on the Wolds, Hunmanby, Kilham, Langtoft, Lowthorpe, Muston, Nafferton, Reighton, Rudston, Ruston Parva, Thwing, Willerby and Wold Newton, and part of the parish of Filey.
