Prairieton is an unincorporated community in Prairieton Township, Vigo County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. Today, due to its proximity to both Terre Haute's southern shopping district (along U.S. Route 41 for approximately two miles south of Interstate 70) and the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary, it has mostly become a commuter town (State Road 63 provides Prairieton residents access to Terre Haute), with fewer than ten businesses within its "city limits". Prairieton is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Vigo Ordnance Plant, also known as the Vigo Chemical Plant or simply Vigo Plant, was a United States Army facility built in 1942 to produce conventional weapons. In 1944 it was converted to produce biological agents for the U.S. bio-weapons program. Although the plant never actually produced bio-weapons before the end of World War II, it did produce 8000 pounds of an anthrax simulant. After the war, the plant was transferred to Pfizer, who operated it until the plants closure in 2008.

USP Terre Haute houses a Special Confinement Unit for male federal inmates who have been sentenced to death as well as the federal execution chamber. Most inmates sentenced to death by the U.S. federal government are housed in USP Terre Haute prior to execution, with few exceptions. FCC Terre Haute is located in the city of Terre Haute, 70 miles (110 km) west of Indianapolis.

It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice, and consists of two facilities: Federal Correctional Institution, Terre Haute (FCI Terre Haute): Established in 1940, it is a medium-security facility with a Communication Management Unit which holds inmates who are deemed to require increased monitoring of communications with others. United States Penitentiary, Terre Haute (USP Terre Haute): Established in 2005, it is a high-security facility which holds federal death row for men and also has a prison camp for minimum-security male offenders.

Honey Creek Township is one of twelve townships in Vigo County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 17,179 and it contained 6,509 housing units. It contains Terre Haute's main shopping district along U.S. Route 41 and is by far the most characteristically suburban of the twelve Vigo County townships. The population includes inmates from the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary, located at its northwest corner.

Linton Township High School and Community Building or Pimento School is a historic school and community centre building located at Pimento in Linton Township, Vigo County, Indiana. It was built by architects from the Albert G. Beldon company in 1925. It is in the American Craftsman style of architecture. Contractor was James O. Sickels of Princeton, Indiana. The building is now abandoned in disrepair. The school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Conceived in 1909 by the Indiana Knights of Columbus, and named for Fr. Pierre Gibault, the Gibault School for Boys was dedicated on October 9, 1921, in Terre Haute, IN as a "home for wayward boys". The first director of the school was Rev. Michael Gorman.
