Stommeln station

Stommeln Synagogue (German: Synagoge Stommeln) is a former synagogue in Stommeln, a district of Pulheim in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was built in 1881–1882 and stands in a courtyard setting behind the house Hauptstraße 85. The building survived the period of National Socialism because it fell out of religious use in the early 1930s and was then sold before the November pogroms of 1938. Since 1979 the former synagogue has been a listed monument and is used by the town as a venue for cultural events, in particular art exhibitions. As one of the few surviving synagogue buildings in the rural area around Cologne, it serves as a memorial to the Jewish community of Stommeln and to the fate of German Jews more generally.

Jewish community of Stommeln refers to the historical Jewish community in today's Pulheim district of Stommeln (Rhein-Erft District, North Rhine-Westphalia). Its presence is already documented in the Middle Ages, was violently interrupted during the Black Death pogroms in 1349, and was re-established from the early 18th century. In the 19th century the community reached its numerical peak; in the 20th century it declined sharply and effectively ceased to exist around 1930. The last Jewish residents remaining in Stommeln were deported in 1942. The Stommeln Synagogue and the Jewish cemetery on Nagelschmiedstraße have been preserved; both now serve as places of remembrance and learning.

The Stommeln Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Stommeln, a district of Pulheim in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, established before 1862. The cemetery served the Jewish Community of Stommeln. It is located on Nagelschmiedstraße.

Pulheim is a station in the city of Pulheim in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is on the Cologne–Mönchengladbach railway. It lies between Köln-Bocklemünd station, which was closed the 1970s, and Stommeln station, 11.5 km from Köln-Ehrenfeld station. The railway line was opened on 1 April 1899 after years of dispute over the precise course of the line. The section from Grevenbroich to Pulheim had actually been completed six months earlier. Pulheim station is on the south-western edge of the old town with the tracks running southeast–northwest. Until 2007, the building had housed a local dispatcher; the route is now controlled from Duisburg.

Pulheim (pronunciation ; Ripuarian: Pullem) is a town in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Since the 1920s, a large substation of the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk AG (RWE) is located at Pulheim. It is the end of the north south powerline and a large control center for the power grid of the RWE. In the communal reform of 1975, several previously independent municipalities were added to the municipality Pulheim, which received city rights in 1981. Pulheim consists of 12 quarters (Stadtteile), including Brauweiler, Geyen and Stommeln.

Knechsteden Abbey (German: Kloster Knechtsteden) is a former Premonstratensian abbey in Dormagen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, since the 1890s a house of the Spiritans. It was founded in 1130, and in 1138 building began on the church, which was created a basilica minor in 1974.

Brauweiler is a part of Pulheim, west of Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. The former Benedictine abbey, Brauweiler Abbey, founded 1024, is used today by the Rhein Department for the Care of Historic Monuments. In Brauweiler in the 1920s a large power transmission station was built, which supplied up to 380 kV. It was also the starting point of the north south powerline. Also in the area of this transformer station is the main control room of the RWE, from which nearly the entire high-voltage transmission system of the RWE AG is supervised by remote control. This control is also used to coordinate the power transmission in continental Europe.
